Chapter 5:
Brothers In Arms
As I arrived at the tavern, it was quiet. I just walked into my room and lay on my bed. Restless sleep, nothing, just imagining what will come.
Then I spiraled mentally; I heard those voices again, the voices of the dead whispering again—no Marek, just fellow comrades.
My heart started pounding.
If this is a nightmare, please wake me up from it. It feels like I am trapped in a never-ending cycle.
I sprinted and giggled like a killer. I jolted into the tavern, looked in the mirror for one good look.
I saw the shadow of my lost comrades coming out of the mirror and staring into my-soul as if this was a sign to embrace my manic side and that it would be right.
Is this how I avenged my comrades?
The next day, I got up and was covered in sweat. Luckily, it wasn't time for school yet.
Maybe, just maybe, I should embrace this crazy side of me that loves the chaos—no silence, just kill or be killed. The thought of that indulges me.
I was heading out of the shower; while the water ran down my body and the steamy mirror, I thought.
"Huh, maybe I can be a hot psycho killer, like in those books Alyssa was reading."
I smirked. I looked at the time; it was almost time for school. I walked out of my room and down the stairs.
The owner of the tavern, a really nice woman, said, "I hope you have a good day at school."
Then I walked out of the tavern, on my way to Ashguard. As I was walking, no one was there yet, but it was really nice. Then other students started to fill what was once a vacant school, now filled with students.
“Hello again, class. It is nice to see you again. Now let's start with the battle of Seraphera. It was an intense battle in 200 BC; there was this antihero alliance called the Veil. The Veil was a group of believers that believed no one is God; as they pushed this agenda of the ideal of the world, they let people decide for themselves, not an all-seeing ruler.”
“However, the Seraphera Alliance did not like this ideal, so they started to spread false rumors or twist the veil ideals, and then a war broke out.”
“Now students, this begs the question, who was in the right? I give vague details for this for the sole purpose of getting your unbiased thoughts; this is your first assignment that introduces how a simple psychological war started.”
Hey, Mr. Riven, I have my own thoughts on this. May I speak on it?
Well, well, this is an interesting twist. Let's hear it.
“If you said that is true, then how did it come to this? Can this logic be the same for everyday life or maybe even the disk system? You give information on Seraphera and then the veil. Not to mention, all this time, you give us the so-called psychological warfare. Can this logic also be applied to this school and how it works, giving us just one half of a story, relating to the stronger message, as nothing as it seems?”
Woah, uhm, ok class, who wants to rebut this claim? Anyone? Sigh, guess I will have to.
“What you said could very much apply to the disk system and life itself, but you miss the crucial part that there should be order. If there is no order, then who wins? What's the outcome of this?”
“As for what you said, I do agree to an extent, but you miss the crucial part of freedom.”
“Yes, there should be order, but not just one person should have the power to decide the outcome of the battle or life itself. Crazy is like you attending to the seraphim, all one god united as one, but the veil on the other side wanted it to be neutral to avoid conflict.”
“Mr. Riven, here's what I'm going to ask you: in your honest opinion, with the logic you try to propound on me, isn't this bias because one ruler should dictate the actions of humans?”
“No, Mason, there is a difference between forcing my own thoughts and how words can dictate actions. Unfortunately, this class is no longer in session. Dismissed.”
I had to go down to the principal's office,
“Mason. I will expel you from this school; if I don't, they will sue the school, and we cannot afford a lawyer. I'm sorry that it took this long to expel you, and I got caught up in legal stuff relating to this incident.”
“Whatever, just know that you made a big mistake, Mr. Malowskie.”
Well, I looked at my disk, still blinking.
I don't know if I'm lucky or not. But since I'm free, I won't have anything to do; maybe I will just go questing and try to level up.
As I headed to the guild reception to register, news spread fast about me being expelled, but the guild cannot deny me; that is one of their rules.
As I went to the guild reception, I smirked. Cold glares looked at me, and everyone turned away as I heard someone mumble,
"It's the aggressor."
“Hello, I would like to apply to be an adventurer.”
“Hello, oh… It’s you. Can I get your name, please?”
“I’m Mason. What about you?”
“Doesn't matter, I don't like brutes like you.”
“Let me see your disk so I don't have to talk to you or see you.”
Disk system upgrading
Creating an I.D. card.
Age: 22
Class: sniper/medic
Skills: nothing that sticks out
Magic: barely
“It's all down; now get a quest and leave this place.”
I smirked. "So this is the town of Hamilton. Now say it to my face. Come on, I know you want to."
"Cat got your tongue? Then better keep it that way, you bunch of drama queens."
Someone followed me. I knew I was being followed, so I went into an alley and hid and proceeded to jump out and grab the person who was following me.
My hand slips and touches her busty body, I pin her to the ground.
“Who are you?”
“Why are you following me?”
“I am called Tyla.”
“Why are you following me, Tyla?”
“Because you seem like an interesting fellow, can you get off of me now? It's not comfy in this cold cement alley.”
As I got up, I tied her hands with some rope. I found,
"What is it you want with me?"
“Your being a brute is true, but they never mention how hot you are. I am here because I want to form a party with you.”
“Why me? Tyla.”
“You piqued my interest; you seem different from most people here, so what do you say? Would you let me join your party?”
“No, I work alone. If you joined, I would use you as a pawn to benefit me”
“That doesn’t sound bad; I might like that. Please, Mason, let me join your party. I will be your pawn and let you use me how you want.”
“You do know that the saying "used me as a pawn" sounds wrong, right? If you are eager to join me, then so be it, but you better handle yourself and not be some useless girl who seeks a savior, because I could manipulate you and you would never know, so be careful. This is only a warning.”
“Yes, I know, trust me, you might be the fool in this partnership; I guess you will find out soon, heh.”
As I get flustered, but deep down it's all an act. I want to be with him, and if I have to show my true skills to impress, then so be it. I belong to him; that part isn't an act.
“I’ve been abandoned by people, or people used me in wrong ways. I never wanted to be an assassin, but God has favorites, and I am not one of them.”
“I grew up in a city called the outskirts of Maradona. I was an orphan; I got picked by a family, who taught me the art of seduction and killing. I can kill someone with my knife without them knowing.”
“I am afraid of being used and violated; after all, in this world females are used as slaves for many things.”I wanted to form groups with people, but they all tried to use me for my body. You seem different, though, Mason.”
“I hope you do not steer me wrong here, or else you will be a fool for doing so.”
While we were walking to the woods to defeat some bandits, there isn’t a rank system in the guild; as long as you know the risk, we are not held liable, as we sign the contract.
we entered the woods, I felt a shiver down my spine, as if we were being watched. I told Mason about my feelings; he just nodded and continued to walk through the woods.
I heard you, Tyla.
I felt a bloodlust consume me as if we were being watched by someone; both of our adrenaline spiked, and we zoomed to a huge rock barely covering us but just enough to understand the view.
I used my pulse scan, one of my abilities; I was shocked that I could use it.
Two enemies-500 meters out and 2500 out. One on the northwest side as the combatant was closing in on us 400, 300, and 200 meters away.
I knew the moment I poked my head out I would be dead.
Just as I was about to command Tyla, she hid on the other side.
When did she do that?.
As I was about to pop him with my pistol, Tyla grabbed him by the neck and made him pass out.
One down, one to go. Pulse scan. UGH, why are you not working now?
I hurried for more cover; as I jumped on the ground prone, I grabbed some grass and put it in my mouth to see where the wind was blowing.
Nothing.
Then all of a sudden, I felt a ripple of air come at me 2 millimeters off from hitting me, just then as I was praying for a miracle. I heard the gun.
that idiot doesn’t know what a silencer is.
Silence filled my mind, thoughts calm and mellow, you could say.
I said a prayer and dropped this combatant 1500 meters away.
You are probably asking how I knew that. It was thanks to my pulse abilities and the sound of the gun, that echo of the shell hitting the ground.
