Chapter 1:

The shadow

Above the sky

The bell was ringing, the teacher left the room, and my classmates went running to the door except for Petra; I saw her coming to my desk.
"Mike, hurry up, and bring your lunch box with you to the table," Petra said.
I smiled and went to get my lunchbox. Walking through the hallways, Professor Hector looked kind of nervous and walked in the direction of my classroom. I stood in the hallway seeing Professor Hector putting a letter in Petra's locker. I was surprised but continued my journey to that table; after walking for 4 minutes, I arrived there and sat down, taking out my food from the lunchbox.
—Wanna share food? "There is no one here; it would be our little secret," she said.
"If you are okay with it, so am I," I responded.
She gave me two slices of sushi, and I gave her three chicken nuggets. While eating, she said to me that Professor Hector wanted to see her in the next period. I remembered the letter on her locker and spat water on the ground.
"Don't get the wrong idea, Mike; it is about my Spanish grades, that's all," Petra said.
I calmed down hearing those words and continued eating my food while she was smiling at me; sadly, it didn't last long because of the bell, meaning we needed to head back to class.

My eyes opened up, and tears were coming out of my eyes. I looked outside; it was dark with the city's lights everywhere. I told myself it was just a bad memory and the things of the past stay there while looking at a photo of Petra. I needed some coffee; my brain was tired. I went downstairs and entered the kitchen and took out everything I needed for my coffee. While waiting, I started to see some weird human shadow, covered all in black, but the silhouette was similar to someone, but I couldn't remember. It was saying my name a lot of times with a sad and happy voice at the same time. I ran as quickly as I could to the light switch to see her face, but when the light turned on, it disappeared. I grabbed my coffee, drank it completely, and went to sleep. This time I woke up to the alarm; it said Tuesday 6:30. While taking a shower, for some reason I couldn't remember what happened last night. Maybe the coffee was too strong for my brain to handle. Walking downstairs to the kitchen, I saw a kind of ink on my walls and floor. — That's so strange. "What did I do last night to make the kitchen messy?" I said to myself. I opened the fridge to grab milk, drank from the carton, put it back, and left my house.

The streets were still kind of dark; I started to feel dizzy. Those 3 hours of sleep will make a really bad day for me. The only thing keeping me awake was the noises from cars and people passing by. The more I walked, the fewer cars and people I saw until, at one point, there was no sound. I looked in every direction, especially at the supermarket next to me, and saw a strange girly shadow looking directly at my eyes. My body froze; I couldn't move a muscle. Suddenly she started to get closer, saying, "Mike, Mike, you can see me, right?" The closer she got, the dizzier my brain got, and the more colorful she got. Her hand was about to touch me until I felt a hand behind me. She disappeared, and my brain was fine. —Dude, are you alright? "You look like a ghost," George said. I felt relieved it wasn't real; I was seeing things, that's all. Looking back at George, I said to him, "Do you see that strange ink on the bench?" "No, maybe you need more sleep; you are acting a bit weird," he replied. Maybe a good sleep in math would save me right now, but sadly we have history, and there is a test tomorrow. Talking to George made me realize we were late for school, so I ran as fast as I could to my classroom. Luckily for me, Professor Benjamin was in a good mood and let me enter.
