Kaito stood at the edge of the path, the graves of his parents behind him, and the quiet ruins of the village below. For a long moment, he said nothing. The wind brushed against his hair, carrying with it the faint scent of smoke that never truly left this place.
He took a deep breath and turned back one last time.“...Thank you for everything,” he whispered. “It’s time to say goodbye. I will never forget this village.”
With those words, he stepped forward, leaving behind the only home he had ever known.
The mountains loomed ahead, towering like ancient guardians. To leave the valley meant climbing them, and the path was steep and unwelcoming. Loose stones shifted underfoot, and the air grew colder with every step. Still, Kaito pressed on.
As he climbed, thoughts crowded his mind. What should I do now? What is my goal? Where should I go first…?
But before he could answer himself—Rustle.
He froze. A shadow slipped between the trees. Kaito quickly ducked behind a trunk, peering out with wide eyes. From the rocky slope emerged a wolf, its teeth bared and its eyes sharp. Soon more appeared, fanning out into a pack.
The largest among them sniffed the air, then growled. Every head turned toward him.
Kaito’s face paled. “You’ve got to be kidding me… I just left the village, and this happens?”
The wolves snarled, and in the next instant, they charged.
“AHHH! Not like this!” Kaito yelled, spinning on his heel and sprinting up the mountain path. His boots slipped on loose gravel, his breath coming fast. Why me?! Why today?!
But fate was merciless. His path ended at a cliff. One step more and he would fall into the abyss.
Panting, his back to the edge, Kaito grasped the sword at his waist. His hands trembled, but then—something deep within his chest stirred. A strange warmth. A pulse. Another chain on his heart rattled.
He steadied his breath, forcing his fear aside. Slowly, he lifted the sword and pointed it toward the pack.“Fine… if this is my first battle, then come!”
The wolves leapt. Kaito swung wildly, instinct guiding his blade.Slash! The first wolf dropped.Thrust! Another collapsed.
But six remained, circling, snarling, waiting for their moment. Kaito’s arms grew heavy, his stance faltered. I can’t win…
Then they all pounced together. The impact drove him backward. His foot slipped. The earth crumbled beneath him.
“Wait, wait, WAIT—!”
And before he could stop himself—he fell.
The world spun, the sky and earth blending into one blur. The wolves’ howls grew distant as the abyss swallowed him whole.
