Chapter 2:

New World?

Warmth for a World OR Grandma Isekai?! Save a Doomed World with Kindness and Cookies!

"Of course, what would you like me to do?"

Annie's immediate response took Aramasa off-guard. She had expected bargaining, suspicion, or at least more questions before acceptance. She hadn't expected an immediate agreement, let alone one not asking for anything in return. She eyed Annie for a moment, then slowly nodded.

"This is not something I ask of somebody lightly, Annie Smith. I am asking you to take on a new physical form, then be placed in a world you currently know nothing about, and begin trying to dethrone a Demon King with powers that are completely unknown to your home world. A man who can destroy entire nations with a single sentence, one who has no mercy upon those he deems lesser, and one whose greed has entirely consumed the world around him. You have not seen the likes of this man in anything of your world, be it fiction or otherwise."

Annie tilted her head. "That just sounds like a typical business owner, dear."

Aramasa tilted her head as well. "No, you fail to understand, Annie Smith. He wears armor simply to signify his position, not to protect him. There isn't a thing in the world that could hurt him, short of perhaps the strongest of assassins? He surrounds himself in lavish accommodations as he leaves the rest of his world to die, and he cares not for anybody, not even his offspring!"

Annie idly tapped a footon the ethereal ground, nodding her head. "Dear, you underestimate the evil of my world. Why don't we focus on what I'm doing in this world of yours?"

Aramasa sighed, not believing this woman for a moment.
"Very well."
She leaned forward, taking a breath to compose herself.

"There is a young woman in that world. Her name is Lilin Conquista. She was meant to be the one who led a hero to slaying the Demon King before he could usurp the throne, but she fell to her selfish instincts and instead became the Demon King's closest servant. Now, the world has fallen to his power. Happiness and kindness has been drained from the world, and I had only the power to summon you. I cannot promise any magic boons, nor any special powers, but... You are all I have, Annie Smith. Would you please help me?"

Annie gave a sigh, nodding thoughtfully.
"Of course, dear... But..."

"What is it, Annie Smith?"

"You still haven't answered my question!" she snapped.

"O-Oh, of course! Right!" Aramasa was stammering, shocked at the authority the recently-deceased woman's voice carried. "W-Well, you see, I... I...."

"You don't know, do you, dear?"

Aramasa looked down. "It's not that I don't know, it's just...."

Annie smiled, approaching the strange woman's seat and crouching down to be at eye level with her. Aramasa looked up, looking into her eyes and finding a strange comfort and security in them. As she saw Annie's smile, she took a deep breath and spoke with more confidence.

"I don't have a plan, but I know where you will start and what you must accomplish," she finally said.

"That's better," Annie said as she stood up again. "Now, what do you want me to do, dear?"

"One of the Demon King's maids, Charlie, recently passed away. Due to this, he is looking for another servant. I will have you summoned as a new maid, and you will be under the tutelage of Lilin. She will teach you how to serve the Demon King, and give you a chance to understand your new world. You will have to use your position to teach Lilin how to fix the world and usurp the Demon King."

Annie nodded, finally able to start putting together an idea of what she needs to do.
"I see, I see," she said, mumbling a bit. She tapped her foot again on the floor, looking down. It was the same starscape, but she could see what seemed to be a planet off in the distance. There didn't really seem to be a floor beneath them, but it was still satisfying to tap. Actually, now that she had a working body again....

Aramasa was patient, but this guest was utterly baffling. Aramasa took a moment to wonder, what were the clothes that Annie Smith was wearing? Her dress seemed to have a uniform plaid texture across it, and there was almost nothing spectacular about it. It was a blue and white pattern with what she understood to be flower patterns in various spots for decoration. It was unlike anything she'd ever seen from the souls she summoned from the same world. Could it be due to her age?

As she took in the strange outfit, she watched as Annie Smith began doing what seemed to be an exercise routine. She was bouncing on her feet, kicking them out, and tapping the heels and toes of her shoes against the invisible ground. It was making quite a bit of noise, but... It felt rather rhythmic? Her shoes were strange as well. Most summoned souls would appear in laced shoes that had a great deal of cushion, but these shoes were simply. Black material that had no special construction, and hardened portions that were being used to tap against the ground. They had a slight heel, but not enough to be considered "high heels". The strange movements seemed to be using the shape of the shoe to create multiple tapping noises in a single, fluid movement.

"Annie Smith, what are you doing?" she finally asked as her curiosity boiled over.

"Why, tap dancing of course!" she said proudly. "My parents taught me, believing it to be a wonderful skill. It's been years since I've been able to indulge, and it feels wonderful!"

"Tap... Dancing?" The words felt peculiar on her tongue. "Interesting. Is this some form of ritual magic?"

"Ritual magic?" Annie laughed. "No, of course not. It's just a dance! But, I suppose I did always use it to help me focus when I could, so it could be seen as a sort of ritual."

"Is it possible to learn this 'Tap Dancing', Miss Smith?"

"Ah, of course," she said, "and thank you for calling me that! Using my full name was rather strange."

"I suppose that means we are both strange to one another," Aramasa said as she stood up. "I wish to learn this 'Tap Dancing' skill before you depart."

"Wonderful, wonderful," Annie said, moving to Aramasa's side. "Now, just follow my lead...."
