Chapter 20:

Volume 2 — Chapter 20: A Place To Stay

Isekai Abyss: Life in Another World Is As Bad As My Previous World

The duo stood side by side, their eyes scanning the dense foliage of the forest. Leaves rustled underfoot as they pushed through the underbrush, the sunlight filtering through in dappled shafts that danced on the ground in front of them. Kasumi, draped in her ethereal white robe that billowed gently with each step, moved gracefully through the lush, swaying grass. Beside her, Raeleanore was outfitted in rugged, practical attire. His tunic, a deep earthy green, was adorned with intricate leather straps and pockets that held an array of essential tools. Over this, he wore a sturdy, weathered cloak, fastened at the neck with a silver clasp. A belt, heavy with the weight of a finely crafted sword, hung low on his hips, the hilt worn smooth by years of use. His boots, scuffed and scarred, were designed for long journeys and treacherous terrains. With each step, Raeleanore's presence was one of quiet strength and readiness, a stark contrast to Kasumi's serene elegance.

Raeleanore pointed towards a clearing nearby, his brow furrowing in thought. "What about here? This spot looks decent enough."

Kasumi nodded, her smile turning contemplative as she knelt, her fingers absently touching the ground. "This area seems... off," she murmured, her voice carrying an edge of concern. Closing her eyes, she reached out with her magical energy, focusing on the negative auras that lingered in the clearing.

Her eyes flashed, a bright white glow enveloping the area. Waves of purifying energy spread outwards, radiating from her like a cleansing aura. The bad auras, twisted and ugly, dissipated, unable to withstand her magic.

As the last of the negative energies faded, Kasumi's eyes widened in surprise. The area around her seemed brighter, the air somehow lighter. She stood, a satisfied smile playing on her lips. "There. That should help."

Raeleanore, watching from a nearby tree, let out a low whistle. "You never fail to impress me, Kas."

Kasumi blushed, shaking her head slightly. "It's just basic purification magic," She replied, her tone modest.

Raeleanore chuckled, hopping down from the tree with cat-like grace. "Basic, huh? Don't sell yourself short, Kas. You've got a gift."

Kasumi rolled her eyes, unable to suppress her grin. "And don't you forget it," she teased, nudging him with her elbow.

Raeleanore chuckled, slinging an arm around her shoulders. "As if that's possible. You're practically the backbone of this adventure, Kas. I'd be lost without you and your purifying skills."

Kasumi smiled, feeling her heart warm at the praise. "Stop it, Raeleanore. You're the one who keeps us fed with your hunting skills."

Raeleanore shrugged, grinning widely. "Yeah, but you keep us alive with your healing skills. We've made a pretty good team so far, haven't we?"

Kasumi chuckled softly, looking around the clearing with a contemplative smile. "You know what? This spot seems perfect," she said, her gaze settling on a flat patch of grass. "Let's build our new home here. And don't worry about my mana. I've got twice the energy you do, remember?"

Raeleanore grinned, already surveying the area to figure out the best place to construct their shelter. "Yeah, yeah. You and your bottomless reserves. Just don't faint on me, okay? We still need you to patch us up."

Kasumi laughed, waving away his teasing comment. "I'll be fine, Raeleanore. Just focus on building our shelter. And besides," her voice took on a teasing tone, "you're one to talk. You're the one who always gets scratched up on hunts, remember?"

Raeleanore feigned offense, placing a hand on his chest. "Hey, I'll have you know that those marks are battle scars, woman. A sign of my strength."

Kasumi rolled her eyes, amused and exasperated at the same time. "Whatever you say, Raeleanore. Just don't go getting any more 'battle scars' while building that shelter."

Raeleanore laughed, picking up a few branches to start the structure of the shelter. "No promises, Kas. You know I can't resist the urge to get into a good fight."

Kasumi chuckled at his teasing retort, rolling her eyes good-naturedly. "Oh please. Don't blame me, Raeleanore. It's your own fault you can't access the full extent of your Auroral Abilities. If you weren't such a showoff, maybe you could have unlocked more abilities by now."

Raeleanore mock-frowned at her comment, still gathering branches for the shelter. "Hey, it's not my fault I've got a knack for the flashy stuff. Besides, who needs more than two abilities?"

Kasumi raised an eyebrow, her smile turning sly. "Spoken like someone who hasn't experienced the full power of other abilities."

Raeleanore paused, his hands still on the branches. "Oh please. I bet your extra ability isn't even that useful."

Kasumi chuckled again, enjoying the banter. "You're just saying that because you can't use it. But let me tell you, it's come in handy more times than I can count."

Raeleanore sighed, setting down the branches he had gathered. "Fine, fine. You win this round, Kas."

Kasumi feigned a victory dance, sticking her tongue out at him. "Of course I do. I always win."

Raeleanore rolled his eyes, reaching for his axe. "Yeah, yeah, whatever. Let's focus, alright? We've got a lot of work to do here."

With that, the duo set to work, chopping wood and collecting materials for their new shelter. The banter continued, the atmosphere filled with their familiar teasing.

Raeleanore leaned back against a tree, his eyes following Kasumi as she lay out their sleeping bags on the soft grass. "You know, the shelter is coming along nicely, but I've been thinking about something."

Kasumi, her focus on setting up their makeshift camp, glanced at him curiously. "And what would that be?"

Raeleanore gave her a cheeky grin, his voice dripping with suggestion. "You, me, a tent... Alone under the stars. What could be more romantic?"

Kasumi's eyes rolled, her expression a mix of exasperation and amusement.

"Seriously, Raeleanore?" she replied, shaking her head. "We're in the middle of building a house, and you're thinking about... that? Really?"

Raeleanore chuckled, his grin widening. He pushed off the tree, strutting towards her with a cocky swagger. "What can I say? I'm a simple man with needs."

Kasumi rolled her eyes again, a smile playing at the corners of her lips. "Simple, sure. Needy, definitely."

Raeleanore feigned offense, placing a hand on his chest. "Hey now, I'm not needy. I just have... appetites, shall we say."

Kasumi smirked, setting down a few supplies before turning to face him. "Appetites, huh? Is that a polite way of saying you're just a shameless flirt?"

Raeleanore chuckled, stepping closer until he was now towering over her. "I prefer the term 'appreciator of beauty. And you, my dear Kas, are a masterpiece."

Kasumi couldn't help but blush at his words, her arms crossed defensively in front of her chest. "You're such a smooth talker, you know that?"

Raeleanore grins, leaning down so their faces are a breath away. "Only for you, sweetheart."

As Raeleanore leaned in to kiss her, Kasumi swiftly grabbed his lips with her fingers, pushing him back. "Whoa, whoa, hold on there, tiger."

Raeleanore's eyebrows raised in surprise, looking at her with a mixture of confusion and amusement. "What's the matter, Kas? Can't resist my charms?"

Kasumi huffed, rolling her eyes at his cockiness. "More like I can't stand your relentless flirting. We have work to do, in case you've forgotten."

Raeleanore chuckled, a lazy smile on his lips. "Oh, I haven't forgotten. Just trying to lighten the mood a bit."

Kasumi gave him a skeptical look, still holding his lips in her fingers. "And by "lighten the mood", you mean you're trying to get me into bed again. Nice try, Casanova."

Raeleanore feigned injury, placing a hand on his chest. "Ouch. That one stung, Kas. I'm just offering to provide some... stress relief. You know, after working so hard all day."

Kasumi let out an exasperated sigh, her fingers still on his lips. "Stress relief... right. More like a headache for me, dealing with your constant advances."

Raeleanore chuckled again, his eyes glittering mischievously. "Come on, you know you like it when I flirt with you. It adds a little spice to life."

Kasumi's face was a mask of frustration, her grip on his lips tightening. "Spice, huh? Yeah, more like a constant annoyance. Can you just focus on building our shelter instead of trying to get me into bed every chance you get?"

Finally, Raeleanore relented, holding up his hands in surrender. "Alright, alright, I'll behave. For now, at least."

Kasumi let out a sigh of relief, finally releasing his lips. "Thank goodness. I thought I was going to have to gag you with my scarf."

Raeleanore chuckled, a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. "Kinky."

Kasumi playfully rolled her eyes again, shaking her head. "Just build the house, you hopeless flirt."

"Aye, aye, Captain," Raeleanore replied, giving her a mock salute.

The night concluded with Raeleanore finding comfort in Kasumi's arms, as they chose to spend their time together in a tender embrace, rather than engaging in any intimate acts. They drifted off to sleep, wrapped in each other's warmth, cherishing the closeness they shared without venturing further under the tent.
