I was released.
Well… not exactly.Lady Rose pleaded on my behalf. This woman stood up to everyone; the nobles looked at me with disdain, the law enforcers wanted to execute me—especially Amos, who openly admitted he wanted to use his axe on me; and the scientists, well, they wanted to dissect me. According to them, I’m the perfect test subject for experiments. I saw Ashton in a new light that day—that guy is insane.
In the end, I was allowed to stay alive.
Now I’m waiting in a special room, with two guards standing in front of and behind the only entrance door. I wince—the chains they put on me send little electric shocks from time to time. When I complain to the guards, they just ignore me.
The door opens—Lady Rose appears with a man at her side. He looks like her: the same silver hair, the same upright and confident posture. The difference is that my savior is much warmer than her male counterpart. He, on the other hand, looks like he wants to kill me…
“How are you?” Lady Rose asks after snapping her fingers—the chains shatter. I rub my wrists, grimacing.
Someone brandishes a sword blade in front of me. I flinch, and the beast inside me stirs.
“Rose, I still don’t understand why you want to release this thing into the wild. You should have let Amos handle it—or even Ilyade.”
He finished his tirade without taking his eyes off me. I could feel his hostility seeping out of every pore. This guy clearly hates me.
“Be nice, Elowen,” she says, lowering his blade with the tip of her finger. She comes closer and presses my cheeks. “Our new friend here is a treasure fallen from the sky.”
The so-called Elowen growled before turning his back.
“Are you hungry?” Lady Rose asks me with her usual smile.
“Uh… yes.”
“Perfect, let’s go eat!” she exclaims. “And Elowen is paying,” she adds, pushing me toward the door.
“Excuse me!?” he yells behind us.

The restaurant we’re in is rather cozy, decorated much like the rest of the city.
“Well, let’s redo the introductions, even if I think you already know me. I’m Rose Sunwhisper, and the man beside me is my beloved little brother, Elowan Sunwhisper. We are of the noble class.” She shows me the mark on her arm—it looks like a sun drawn in black ink, with four arrows surrounding it. “And you, who are you?”
At this question, her brother fixed his gaze on mine, as if trying to read my soul.
I swallow hard. Should I tell them?
“My name is Ryo.”
“I’ve never heard a name like that before.”
“It’s not common, I admit,” Elowen remarks with surprise.
“And who are your parents?”
A flash of sadness passes through my eyes.
My parents…“I don’t have much to say about them…”
That’s not entirely a lie.The siblings lowered their eyes for a few seconds, before Rose lightened the mood by talking about her future sister-in-law.I don’t think Elowen is interested in that sort of thing.
---
The Sunwhisper siblings are like night and day. If the elder sister is friendly, the younger brother frowns more than he blinks. Instead of taking me back to the special room, they brought me to their estate.
“Are you sure this is a good idea?” I ask Rose nervously, as a maid prepared the bed. I clearly don’t want to cause more trouble for this family than I already have.
I fear that the monster inside me will awaken and wreak havoc. Then I’d have a real reason to be executed.
“Don’t worry, as surprising as it may seem, the other council members are no longer after you. Do you know why?”
She sits on one of the armchairs, crossing her long legs, while her brother shoots me another dark look.
“They know you won’t survive. You see, you’re not the first courier to end up infected by a beast in this kingdom. But strangely, you seem to be doing fine. The others think you’ll die in a few days, like the others before you.”
“Then why did they want to kill me if they already knew I was going to die anyway?”
It doesn’t make sense.“They wanted to shorten your suffering—or analyze you before you fell into deep sleep or madness. How are you feeling right now?”
I’m not even sure myself. I feel like everything is fine, but at the same time, something feels off.
“Everything is fine and nothing is fine at the same time.”
“We’ll take you to Ashton tomorrow,” Rose says with a childlike smile.
I shiver in fear.
The two hosts leave the room after wishing me good night.
Once in bed, my thoughts start to race. I went from cashier in a store to mana courier to being infected by a beast attracted to mana.
I raise my hand toward the ceiling and sigh—my stats appear before me. Communication: level two. They used a spell to steal my money, so of course I’m at zero. At least my attraction went up to level one, my speed is still stuck, and my intelligence—strangely—it shot up to…
One hundred!
How is that possible?I don’t even feel smarter. What if it’s the beast’s intelligence? My eyes slide down to the “magical power” section.Instead of “in development” like I expected, it now says “familiar.” It must mean the beast is my familiar.
How am I supposed to tame something like that?
