Chapter 4:

Firts day at job

Like I said, you have to be friends with the whole town within a year or you'll be erased forever

January 12th, Viliose Imperial Calendar
I woke up and opened the window of my room. The morning was cold, unlike yesterday. I had woken up in a place surrounded by snow. Thinking back on yesterday, I had found a house where I was taken in thanks to Claudine. I also got permission from the village elders to stay. However, for now, I haven’t made any progress on the mission the goddess gave me. My friendship level hasn’t increased with anyone...
Except for a cat, which somehow decreased to -1.

—Thank you very much for the food —I said.
Breakfast had arrived. Here they serve it earlier than I was used to. In my old world, I used to wake up at 11 a.m. after long hours of studying. Here, it seems normal to get up at 8. But aside from my personal life —which no longer matters, since I now live in another world— my table was surrounded by people. Unlike in my previous life, Claudine and her younger brother Limo were there, chatting while she cleaned his face.

—You shouldn’t put so much in your mouth at once. Eat more slowly —she said gently.

—Yes, sister... —he replied, unenthusiastically, but obeyed.

—Want some pancakes?

While I watched them, a voice spoke to me from behind. Just like when the grandmother had appeared behind me at the elder's council, she startled me once again.

—Yes, thank you very much, ma’am.

She smiled and said:

—No need to be so formal. Call me Dolce. You’re part of the family now.

Claudine and I were getting ready to head to work.

—You're leaving already? —asked Limo, sad as always when his sister went to work.

—Yes. Be good, Limo. And remember, be careful when playing with others. Last time your sister was so worried, and—
The grandmother placed a hand on Claudine’s shoulder.

—Go already. Don’t get held up talking.
Claudine lowered her head.

—But...

Grandma handed her a bag with a couple of cookies.

—And one more for the new boy.

I didn’t expect it, but she handed me a bag of cookies as well. We thanked her for the gesture and left.

—This is our workplace: the village's Adventurer Guild. Come in, it's cold —said Claudine, opening the door.

And when I looked inside, unexpectedly...

—THIS PLACE IS COVERED IN COBWEBS! —I blurted out.

The place was disgustingly dirty. Have they ever cleaned this place? Why are there so many documents on the floor of a guild?

—How long has it been since you cleaned in here?

—Hehe... —she laughed awkwardly.

—No "hehe"! What is this mess of an adventurer guild?

I really didn’t expect this.

—Wow, is that how you talk about your workplace on your first day, rookie? —said a serious-looking man in his 40s. Next to him, a familiar face.

—Klaus, Enphi, good morning! —Claudine greeted cheerfully.

—Hey, is that guy the other guild adventurer? —I whispered to Claudine, but the man seemed to hear me.

—"That guy"? Is that what you call your mentor, ROO-KIE?!

He didn’t have to shout that last part...

—This is Klaus. And yes, he’s the other adventurer here. Let’s say he also acts as our secretary and assigns us missions.

—Also...?

—With you, we’re now four active adventurers in the guild. I look forward to working with you, partner —said Enphi, the familiar figure.

—I also look forward to working here —I said, bowing—. I’ll do whatever you ask: fight monsters, help citizens with their problems...
Like in an RPG...

—Heh, whatever, huh?

—Uh?

Next thing I know, in my hand was my "justice weapon against parasites": a toilet brush. My shiny armor... a housewife’s apron...
