Chapter 12:

Teamwork

Second Luck

As the first light of dawn hit the training grounds, Shen and his crew came together, stronger and more united than ever. After weeks of hard mental and physical training with Raiden as their leader, they had improved their skills and strengthened their resolve. But today would be the last test of how well they did.

Raiden brought all the teams together in the middle of the training fields. As they looked over the recruits, his piercing eyes stayed on Shen and the other leaders. Raiden said, "Today we're going to have a competition to see who can get the flag first." This isn't just a test of speed and skill. It's a test of how well you can lead, work together, and plan. The winning team will get to go on their first mission as commanders-in-training. Tell me what you found out.

The rules were easy to understand, but it would be hard to follow them. The flags were on opposite sides of the field, and each team had to get the other flag while also protecting their own.

"Are you scared?" Shen kept thinking about what Raiden had said as he and his squad got together to plan. Before joining this team, Shen had been scared a lot—of failing and of getting lost in the emptiness that had taken over his life. He pushed away the doubt by making fists. "No," he said in a low voice. "I'm not scared anymore."

He looked back at his men. Fenix's old friends were the other side. They were quick, strong, and very well-coordinated. Shen believed in the unique mix of skills that his team had, such as Toren's raw strength, Zara's agility, Fenix's speed, Kelly's deadly accuracy, and Kael's quiet precision. "We'll use their strengths against them," he said firmly. "Kelly, you'll provide cover fire." Fenix, you're our runner. Kael, I need your help to break up their formation while Toren and Zara hold the line.

People nodded and hesitated when he gave them orders. Shen could tell he wasn't very experienced; his orders made sense, but they weren't very polished. Still, his team trusted him enough to do what he said.

When Raiden gave the signal, both teams rushed into action, and things got crazy. Toren and Zara held the defensive line while Shen yelled orders to Kelly and Fenix, telling them to go toward the enemy's flag.

The first moves were strange. Shen's attempts to lead the group showed that he didn't know enough. Kelly stopped when Shen's orders didn't feel right to her. Toren, who was strong but not quick, had a hard time moving when Shen thought he was going faster than he really was. Shen gritted his teeth and changed his plan quickly. "Concentrate on holding your ground, Toren," he yelled. "Zara, keep moving and help him!"

Kael vanished into the dark, and his quiet movements bothered the other crew. Shen, on the other hand, drew attention to himself by deliberately coming into view. He yelled, "Over here!" and hit his sword against his shield. As they got ready for battle, the enemy defenders moved closer to him, and their formation became less rigid. Shen's heart raced. He wasn't a natural fighter, but he had learned how to stand his ground.

Kael struck out of the darkness with a flurry of quiet accuracy. In just a few seconds, the first defender lost his balance and dropped his weapon. The second turned around to face the threat, but stopped because he didn't know where to hit. Shen took advantage of the situation and charged in to disarm the distracted enemy with a strategic blade sweep. Together, Shen and Kael moved deeper into enemy territory.

In the meantime, Kelly and Fenix got closer to the enemy's flag. Kelly moved quickly but carefully, keeping her bow steady in her hands. Her sharp eyes watched every move and looked around. In contrast, Fenix was a whirlwind of movement, easily dodging things in his way.

Kelly shot an arrow with deadly accuracy without thinking twice, forcing one opponent to dive for cover. Fenix skillfully dodged the second's charge and hit the defender's legs, sending him crashing to the ground. Kelly and Fenix kept going down their road, which had been cleared for a short time.

Just as they were about to reach the flag, another defender, who was faster and more experienced than the others, showed up. Fenix was stopped in the middle of a sprint as he reached for the flag. Fenix jumped out of the way just in time to avoid the defender's sword swing. The defender turned his shield quickly to deflect Kelly's arrow.

The fight slowed their progress, giving the other team a lot of time to regroup.
Fenix pretended to go left, which got the defender's attention. Kelly lost another arrow as he took the chance. This time, it hit the defender's shield hard enough to knock him down, which let Fenix grab the flag.

Toren and Zara were back at their base and stood their ground. In a well-planned attack, three players from the other team ran past the defenders. Toren faced the charge head-on, using his huge body as a wall of strength. He swung his weapon and hit the first attacker, knocking him back and sending him to the ground.

As she danced around the other two, Zara moved quickly and accurately. She barely missed the sword of the third attacker and hit one of the attackers hard in the side, making him run away.
Toren and Zara kept the line together.

Shen and Kael were still deep in enemy territory when they noticed that the other team was paying less attention. "Shen said, "They're going back to our base." He stayed behind to keep the other defenders' attention on him, and he waved for Kael to turn around.

Kael slipped through the enemy lines and back to the defending line like a ghost. Zara nodded to him, and the two of them made the perimeter stronger. Meanwhile, Shen kept causing havoc in the enemy's lines by using evasive maneuvers and feints to throw the surviving defenders off balance.

Fenix ran toward their base with a flag in his hand while Kelly covered his escape. The enemy leader yelled when they found out the flag had been stolen. Fenix was chased by a group of defenders who broke away from the main group to follow him.

Kelly shot a quick burst of arrows from a higher place, making the attackers duck for cover. One shot hit a defender's leg and made him move much more slowly. "Go, Fenix!" Kelly's yelling cut through the noise. "I can do this!"

As Fenix got closer to the enemy's base, Shen came back from their land and stopped the last two attackers. He quickly hit back, knocking the attacker down after he raised his shield just in time to block a blow meant for Fenix's back.

Toren and Zara surrounded Fenix as he entered their defensive zone. "We've got him!" Toren roared and slammed his shield into the ground, as if to dare anyone to try their luck.

Shen and his men regrouped, their flag was safe, and the enemy was confused. "Get into defensive positions," he ordered in a stern voice. "We're holding the line."

The captain of the other team, desperate, yelled one last order and charged forward with the rest of his teammates in a last-ditch attack. Shen's group got ready for the hit.

It was a very intense fight. Toren's pure strength stopped most of the attack and sent his attackers flying. Zara was able to move between her opponents and hit them hard enough to stop their momentum because she was so quick. Kael moved like a shadow, killing survivors before they could regroup.

Shen was in charge of the defense and made sure his men worked together. "Kelly, to the left flank!" As a second wave came forward, he yelled, "Fenix, cover her!" His voice cut through the noise and led his squad perfectly.

Kelly and Fenix stopped the last of the attackers, but Toren and Zara stayed strong. Shen stood straight in the middle of the formation and made sure that no gaps were left open.

After the dust settled, Raiden's voice rang out across the field. "Shen's team won today's contest!"

Raiden walked toward Shen, his harsh demeanor softening a little. He said, "You showed today that leadership is more than just giving orders." It all comes down to knowing what your team can do and helping them succeed.
