Chapter 12:

Teamwork

Second Luck

Shen and his crew assembled, stronger and more unified than before, as the first rays of dawn swept across the training grounds. They had honed their skills and fortified their determination after weeks of demanding mental and physical training under Raiden's leadership. But the final test of their success would come today.

In the middle of the training fields, Raiden brought all the teams together. His piercing eyes lingered on Shen and the other leaders as they scanned the assembled recruits. Raiden declared, "We're going to have a capture-the-flag competition today." This is more than just a test of quickness and dexterity. It's a test of leadership, cooperation, and strategy. As commanders-in-training, the victorious team will be granted the opportunity to embark on their first mission. Show me what you have discovered.

The regulations were simple, but putting them into practice would be difficult. With the flags positioned at opposite sides of the field, each team's mission was to capture the other flag while simultaneously protecting their own.

Shen kept thinking about Raiden's comments as he and his squad gathered to plan: "Are you afraid?" Despite its simplicity, the question had a profound impact. Shen had previously been plagued by fear—fear of failing and of becoming lost in the emptiness that had engulfed him prior to joining this squad. He pushed the doubt away by clenching his fists. "No," he said in a low voice. "I’m not afraid anymore."

He turned back to his troops. The opposing party was made up of Fenix's old friends, who were swift, powerful, and extremely coordinated. Shen had faith in his team's special blend of abilities, which included Toren's raw strength, Zara's agility, Fenix's speed, Kelly's lethal accuracy, and Kael's quiet precision. "We’ll use their strengths against them," he said steadily. "You'll supply cover fire, Kelly. You're our runner, Fenix. Kael, I'll need your assistance in breaking up their formation while Toren and Zara maintain the defensive line."

There was a mixture of nods and hesitancy in response to his commands. Shen could sense his inexperience showing; his orders made sense, but they lacked polish. Nevertheless, his team had enough faith in him to follow his guidance.

Chaos broke out as both squads rushed into action at Raiden's signal. While Toren and Zara maintained the defensive line, Shen yelled orders, guiding Kelly and Fenix in the direction of the enemy's flag.

The first moves were awkward. Shen's efforts to lead the group exposed deficiencies in his knowledge. When Shen's instructions went against her gut, Kelly paused. When Shen overestimated his speed, Toren, who was strong but not nimble, found it difficult to adjust his position. Shen clenched his teeth and made quick adjustments to his plan. "Focus on holding your ground, Toren," he called. "Zara, stay mobile and support him!"

Kael disappeared into the darkness, his quiet movements disturbing the other crew. Shen, on the other hand, attracted notice by purposefully coming into view. "Over here!" he yelled as he clattered his sword against his shield. The enemy defenders moved closer to him, their formation becoming less rigid as they readied themselves for combat. Shen's heart pounded. Although he was not naturally a fighter, he had learnt to stand his ground.

In a flurry of quiet accuracy, Kael struck out of the darkness. The first defender lost his balance and his weapon disarmed in a matter of seconds. The second whirled to confront the danger but paused, uncertain of where to hit. Shen seized the opportunity, charging in to use a strategic blade sweep to disarm the distracted adversary. Shen and Kael advanced farther into enemy territory together.

Kelly and Fenix, meantime, moved closer to the enemy's flag. Keeping her bow poised in her hands, Kelly moved quickly yet carefully. Her keen eyes tracked every movement, scanning the area. Conversely, Fenix was a whirlwind of movement, effortlessly swerving between obstacles.

Without hesitation, Kelly loosed an arrow with deadly accuracy, forcing one opponent to dive for cover. Fenix skillfully sidestepped the second's charge and smacked the defender's legs, sending him crashing into the dirt. Kelly and Fenix continued on their road, which had been temporarily cleared.

Another defender, quicker and more experienced than the rest, showed up just as they were about to reach the flag. Fenix was stopped in mid-sprint as he reached for the flag. Fenix jumped aside, just missing the defender's blade swing. With a quick twist of his shield, the defender diverted Kelly's arrow.

Their advance was slowed by the skirmish, which gave the other squad valuable time to reassemble.
With his jaws clenched, Fenix feinted to the left, capturing the defender's attention. Kelly lost another arrow as he took the opening. This time, it hit the defender's shield hard enough to knock him down, allowing Fenix to seize the flag.

Toren and Zara were back at their own base and resolutely stood their ground. Three players from the other team overran the defenders in a well-coordinated attack. With his enormous frame acting as a wall of power, Toren confronted the charge head-on. He swung his weapon, knocking the first assailant back and sending him sprawling to the ground.

Zara moved quickly and precisely as she danced around the other two. She avoided the third assailant's sword by a short margin and delivered a powerful hit to the side of one attacker, causing him to flee.
Together, Toren and Zara maintained the line.

Still deep in enemy territory, Shen and Kael saw the change in the opposing team's attention. Shen said, "They're redirecting to our base." While he remained to further divert the attention of the remaining defenders, he gestured for Kael to double back.

Like a ghost, Kael slipped through enemy lines and returned to the defending line. Zara acknowledged him with a nod, and the two of them strengthened the perimeter. Meanwhile, Shen kept causing havoc in the enemy's lines by using evasive maneuvers and feints to throw the surviving defenders off balance.

With Kelly covering his escape, Fenix ran toward their base while holding a flag. When the enemy leader realized the flag had been stolen, they let out a cry. Fenix was relentlessly pursued by a number of defenders who broke away to follow him.

Standing on higher ground, Kelly shot a quick burst of arrows, causing the assailants to duck for cover. One shot severely slowed a defender by striking his leg. "Go, Fenix!" Kelly's voice broke through the confusion as she yelled. "I’ve got this!"

Shen resurfaced from the enemy's land as Fenix approached their base, stopping the two remaining assailants. He quickly countered with a blow that left the assailant falling after raising his shield just in time to block a blow intended for Fenix's back.

As Fenix entered their defensive zone, Toren and Zara surrounded him. "We’ve got him covered!" As if to challenge anyone to try their luck, Toren roared and slammed his shield into the ground.

Shen and his men reassembled, their flag secured, and the enemy confused. "Defensive positions," he commanded in a stern tone. "We’re holding the line."

Desperate, the opposing captain roared a final command, surging forward with his remaining teammates in a last-ditch attack. Shen's group prepared for the blow.

The fight was intense. The majority of the attack was repelled by Toren's unadulterated strength, which sent his assailants tumbling. Because of her mobility, Zara was able to move between opponents and deliver accurate blows that stopped their momentum. Kael stalked around like a shadow, eliminating survivors before they could reassemble.

Shen oversaw the defense, making sure his men worked together as a team. "Left flank, Kelly! He yelled, "Fenix, cover her!" as a second wave came forward. He led his squad precisely with a voice that cut through the confusion.

While Kelly and Fenix stopped the last of the attackers, Toren and Zara remained firm. Standing erect in the middle of the formation, Shen made sure that no gap went undefended.

Raiden's voice roared across the field as the dust settled. "The winners of today’s competition are Shen’s team!"

Shen's crew cheered and sighed with relief at the announcement. Shen felt a surge of pride as he caught his breath. His team had collaborated perfectly, with each member contributing to the win.

With a small softening of his harsh demeanor, Raiden walked toward Shen. "Today, you proved that leadership is about more than giving orders," he stated. It all comes down to identifying your team's capabilities and leading them to success. You deserve both your first mission and this victory.

Shen felt pride and resolve fill his heart. The emptiness that had once engulfed him now appeared far away, replaced by a fierce determination to go on.
