Chapter 31:
Second Luck
Only a piece of fabric remained as proof after Shen's tenacious pursuit lasted for several minutes. Chaos reigned as he limped into the war room, where the admirals were assembled. Reports came flooding in, commands were yelled, and voices rose from every corner.
Shen paused to look around the room, staring at one wall in particular. Another of the magnetic devices he had seen before was embedded there, almost imperceptible. His voice was calm but forceful, and his brow furrowed slightly as he spoke.
He pointed to the almost undetectable magnets and remarked, "I noticed something about the system on that wall." "A complex process has been set up by someone. There are these magnets all over the pyramid.
The wall was the first thing the three admirals looked at. As they looked over the places Shen had pointed out, a little uneasiness began to grow between them. With an inquisitive frown, one admiral took a step toward Shen.
"What precisely are you proposing?"
Shen took a moment to gather his thoughts before giving a thoughtful answer. The purpose of this configuration was to reroute bullets in midair. I believe a Republican-developed weapon may have been utilized. By directing the bullets along exact paths, the magnets enable striking a target without being directly detected. However, because so many magnets are changing the projectile's route, it is practically impossible to forecast where it will impact.
One of the admirals moved forward before Shen could finish, his voice heavy with authority and his face gloomy. "Commander, one of those bullets struck the King."
Immediately, the room became quiet. Shen paused, as though frozen in time, then gathered himself and asked pressing inquiries.
What's wrong with him? Is this thing serious? His eyebrows furrowed in worry.
After a moment of hesitation, the admiral answered in a steady but solemn tone. He sustained a blow to the shoulder. There is no imminent threat to his life, and his health is stable. He is being closely watched, though, and has been told to take it easy.
Shen was relieved to hear this, but his mind was racing with unanswered questions. Finding the truth about this incident was crucial to the lives of many people, both common and royal.
Shen's brother, General Geno Takeda, interrupted the discussion. "The area is under surveillance and has been secured, but the suspect has not yet been located."
Shen took a step forward and spoke in a calm, measured tone. "The assassin has managed to vanish. It will be very hard to catch them now.
To Shen's left, the admiral questioned, "How do you know this?"
With his gaze fixed on the wall, Shen answered, "I followed the trail of the magnets." "I was unable to apprehend them, but I did see the escape path. But something was left behind. Shen carefully extracted the scrap of fabric from his pocket and gave it to the admirals.
General Takeda's fingers skimmed over the piece's surface as he studied it, his gaze narrowing. It had a recognizable emblem and was composed of polyester. The admirals obviously recognized the emblem, but Shen did not. Takeda stared at the design, his face hardening.
He started by pointing to the markings and saying, "This fabric is polyester, which is frequently worn by insurgents during skirmishes." It bears an uncommon but recognizable symbol—that of senior Regalia agents. This person wasn't your typical assassin.
Shen lifted his head and spoke to the admirals, his face thoughtful. It would have been impossible to carry out such a complex strategy alone, particularly at such a crucial moment. They either have strong supporters or have been planning this for a while.
Shen hesitated as he considered the potential for foreign intervention. Before he could make up his mind, an admiral made a firm statement.
"Commander, you might be correct, but drawing conclusions without hard data could have terrible results. Before we act, we need to be assured.
The room was briefly quieted by these remarks, but Shen's mind was still racing with inquiries. He was aware that a solution was required, and that looking into Regalia directly was the most obvious course of action. It was his responsibility as an analytical commander to find the truth.
After gathering his thoughts, Shen spoke resolutely. He turned toward his brother and said, "Admiral Geno." "Please allow me to complete this mission. I'll go to Regalia and see what or who is responsible. Perhaps this is only the beginning of this assassination attempt. A bigger scheme might already be underway if another country gets involved.
Geno looked at his brother sharply and without comment. He could see the fire in Shen's eyes and his determination. However, the mission was risky, and it was a difficult choice to put Shen in such danger. Geno hesitated for a moment before continuing, his voice a little hesitant.
"This isn't your typical mission." Geno started, having trouble thinking.
Shen interrupted before Geno could finish, his voice steady. "Now more than ever, Admiral, the King needs you here. The Republic must maintain its composure, at least until the public's trust is restored, and the Kingdom needs stability. Let me take care of this.
Shen's remarks resonated with Geno, who let out a heavy sigh. Reluctant acceptance took the place of his hesitancy. The stillness was broken by another admiral who spoke with conviction.
"Geno, she's right. Before things get worse, we need answers. The public expects outcomes.
Slowly, Geno turned to Shen and gave him a solemn nod. He said strongly as he and his brother locked eyes. Excellent. You'll travel to Regalia, but your sole goal is to obtain information. Until we have indisputable evidence, do not accuse or exacerbate the matter. If you discover anything, let us know right away. Do you get it?
Shen gave a nod. "I get it, Admiral."
For Shen, this assignment was a huge responsibility. Determining the truth about the assassination attempt was crucial to the Kingdom's security.
