Chapter 2:

So What is it?

He was ready to die but he woke up young again in a fantasy world.

He felt comfortable and perfectly at ease. Sitting at the kitchen table, it's surface scratched up and worn from many years of faithful service. Ella was making coffee for them both, complaining as she did about varmints that weren't yet getting into her garden, but it was only a matter of time... Something nagged at the back of his mind, but he wasn't sure. He wasn't late for work, he knew. He got up and checked the thermostat. He expected Ella to comment on his restlessness, but now she was having a go at the neighbors children. Classic Ella. The thermostat hadn't been tampered with. He turned around and froze. A stranger was standing in the door. He was dressed as the elves were, but everything else... different. He was far too muscular for one, and had brown hair. The strangers face was masculine with a well kept van-dyke and piercing grey eyes. He held up his hands as a gesture of peace. Reflexively Van had taken up a boxers stance. He could still hear Ellas voice but she was speaking gibberish and she sounded far away. same speech patterns but seemingly in a different language.

"You're dreaming." said the stranger. Think about it for a second... deep down you know this isn't your current reality, no matter how much you want it to be." Vans shoulders sagged, and Ella faded away.

"I hate this." said Van. "Whenever this happens, these dreama, It's like I'm losing her again."

"I'm sorry," said the stranger. "I'm not responsible for the direction your dream had taken."

"Who even ARE you?" asked Van. Pulling a chair out and helping himself to a seat.

the stranger looked at Van. "I've been called Oloss by all of my masters. I'm exited to say, that now includes you."

"Wha-? I don't even know you... And I'm not sure I like the sound of that. I never volunteered to be anyone's master. Unless you're a framing hammer, I'm not your master."

The stranger laughed heartily. "I could feel the tug of my new holder in your given direction. By the state of my dress, shaped by your subconscious, You are probably considered someones property, yourself, and someone your master." Van frowned  as Oloss continued.

"I'm excited. Your presence was so strong when I became aware of you, I thought for sure you were close by. However, if you're a captive of the elfen, You are far away. That means-"

"How do you know about that!?" demanded Van, "How are you in my dream!? Why do I feel like I know you're not just a dream!?"

"I am explaining that now." soothed Oloss. "You know I am a relic corre..." He stopped mid-sentence and his expression became full of wonder. "You do NOT know!" he accused, "You are from... somewhere else!"

"How do you even know that!?" Van shouted, jumping to his feet. His chair clattered behind him and he had balled up his fists. Breathing deeply he loosened his hands and sat back down. "Thank you for testing my restraint." he said to the room in general.

"Bit hot blooded are we?" chided Oloss. "Surface thoughts," he explained. "and the more time we spend together the easier it will become." Van wasn't sure he liked that, but realized he instinctively liked and trusted this guy. As Van mused, Oloss continued, "The stronger the compatibility and link between us, the stronger and longer you'll be able to cast magic. In fact, reaching you like this before we even met, and at such a range may have never happened before."

Van leaned forward, interested. For the first time in a while he'd completely forgotten Ella. "I'm more of a physical type."

Oloss said, "There are abilities that enhance personal combat abilities. However, You only get two abilities. One is my utility gift, and the other is seemingly random."

"Well..." asked Van, more thoughtful then usual, "What are they, the different powers?"

"More then I have time to speak of." Came the answer. Here's the good part... If I can access your dreams, you already have access to your powers."

"What, really?" "They will be very weak because of our distance, but they will also be instinctual to you. You'll become aware of them naturally. Use requires conscious will though."

"Then why can't you tell what my magic thingies are since we're 'linked?" Van made air quotes.

"I don't know why, but I don't like 'this'... seems... demeaning, somehow." Oloss had also made air quotes.

"whatever," said Van, "but why can't you?"

"It's not like a surface thought, it lies deeper."

      "Both of them?"

Oloss blinked in surprise, "both...." then laughed. "My utility gift is always the same, just as all relics have the same utility gift with all their holders. Many relics have extraordinary utility gifts. Some of them can even overshadow the other."

"So what is it?!" pressed Van, excitedly.

Oloss looked away and down. He mumbled something Van couldn't quite hear. Van hesitated. It was obviously something so lame, Oloss was ashamed of it. After a pause Van asked again, quietly, "So what is it?"
