Chapter 10:

No Problem.

The Isekai Illusion Theory

"You sure I'll be fine...?" I asked, my voice smaller than I intended.

“No. But if you managed to steal Lisa’s staff, I’m sure you can handle it!” Mochiko answered, all confidence and no mercy.

We were in the backyard of this beautiful house: a wide grass patch ringed by trees. Some flowers, no fence, just sunlight shaded by the forest shadow. And me, about to be struck by lightning in broad daylight by a kid I’d effectively created in my head. At a distance that I consider safe enough from the house and the trees.

“H-Hey Mochiko, how many volts is that thing?” I askes.

“Around five hundred million,” she replied, like nothing.

W-WHAT?! I don’t know typical lightning numbers, but five hundred million voltsBUT THAT IS DEFINITELY LETAL!!

THERE IS NO WAY I'M GONNA SURVIVE THAT-

“G-Go on.”

Mochiko spread her legs a little, raised her staff, and held it high like a conductor before an orchestra. Her face was not smiling, but the purest imposingness in her eyes. Declaring as loudly as she could, like a proclamation.

“Behold, insignificant mortals of the globe! Witness the training of the one who will become the greatest magician in the world!”

I hope she is not referring to me...

"Ka..."

From the staff tip, a white ball of sparks began to form. The air suddenly began to change around us as our hair lifted, and our clothes also began to move with the new wind, as if God himself had blown in our direction. The previous blue sky folded in on itself as fast clouds rushed in, gray and cloudy, funneling down toward the staff. The whole world felt like a speaker about to blow.

I-Is that "electric magic"?... sounds uh, kind of scary...

"TCHAU!!"

From the sky, a concentrated thread of electricity descended right towards me, hitting exactly where I was.

I don’t have a good metaphor for what followed. My body was fried instantly, shaking at frequencies unknown to humanity. I convulsed, every muscle firing at once throughout my body. I felt a giant tingling sensation, as if several and several ants were crawling around my body at infinite speeds, in every single part.

The smell of burnt hair, my hair, rose sharp and metallic in my mouth. Such an intense pain that I think my eyes turned 180 degrees inside my school.
The best example I can give is like being inside a loudspeaker while someone screams.

Kattchau, that's the full name of the attack. A definitely very powerful ONE.

The next thing I saw was an infite white light around me.

And a loli-fairy.

“What a pathetic death,” came the small, familiar voice.

“I know that, Brain,”

I was back in the white room. Brain hovered closer than usual with her arms crossed, disappointment build into every tiny motion. Not even flying this time, stationary, like an examiner.

“Didn’t you expect this? You didn’t know it would happen?” she said.

“I knew... It was obvious.”

“Then why you let her hit you?” she snapped. “Were you too afraid to say no? Trying to impress her? Wanting to be useful? That costed you own life!”

“I… I don’t know. Maybe I wanted to help her. Maybe I wanted her to notice me.” My voice thinned. “You know what I mean.”

Her face softened, looking down with a sigh."...You’re such a loser.”

“Indeed. But I can resurrect, I can just come back. What’s wrong with using what I have?”

“You said you wouldn’t abuse it,” she said.

"In these days since I started living in this house, I've been reflecting a lot and..." I admitted "I... I am not sure, but I think I should use my power, since I have it... Anyway."

“Prepare to die for them. Many, many times,” she said flatly.

That line would have shocked me before, but strangely, it didn’t feel wrong now. Maybe because she will never know I died, I'll say I just fainted or something.

“Oh yeah, open the portal,” I said. “I can’t waste time here.”

She stood up, with a not very happy face "Ok... Trading your life for her training, you will feel what you felt today over and over again. Is that's fair?"

“...Just open it.” I repeated.

The white oval light open. Brain’s voice softened to her usual indifference: “Keep teaching us, conscience.”

With a single step, I once again transnationalized dimensions.

When my vision cleared my body is lying on the ground. No burns, no tingling, no pain. Everything is fine.

It feels so good to be... normal.

“T-Theo!? Theo, are you alive?!” Mochiko’s voice shredded the air.

She was crouched over me, looking so... desperate, trembling and on the verge of tear. Not the smug, dramatic girl from before but a small, shaking thing.

Yeah, killing someone is scary, I supposed.

I put my hands on the floor to help me seat down "H-Hahaha, don't worry! I'm alright! Just u-uh... fainted for a bit. T-That means the spell is really great!"

She exhaled like she’d been holding her breath for an hour and then quickly snapped back into drama mode. “O-Of course. The man who stole Lisa’s staff and beat Anfang would not die from such a mediocre spell!”

M-Mediocre!? Is she joking with me?!

But then, she glared at the ground looking... concerned “I… I don’t know if we should keep this training. Are you really okay?”

Ah, that was cute.

"Don't worry! I'll survive anything! W-We can do whenever you want, wherever you want, I'll always be available without the slightest problem!"

I pointed to myself "Look, not even my clothes were torn! I just fainted, there is no problem."

You really don't need to worry.

“...O-Ok then..." She stook a huge breath, and then forced a brave little smile, but she was still visibly worried "T-Then, prepare yourself! Someday I will call you and... I will choose a much more powerful magic!".”

"Yeah, no problem... A-Ah, the results were very good! I-I even fainted! Haha..."

"Yeah..." She didn’t laugh. She looked down, still unsure.

I wonder if am I even still afraid of dying?

Well I shouldn't. I can come back from death so...

No Problem.
