Chapter 3:

01.03 - Mister Morgenlicht`s Dragon Maid

Morgenstern - Morning Star - Ake No Myōjō - 明けの明星

I sat in the center of the rubble of what was once Alfred’s study, surrounded by a faint glow.

Whatever caused the explosion must have kept me safe somehow.

Many burned paper scraps flew through the air around me, some still held tiny embers, slowly settling down.

The smell of charred wood and burning book bindings filled my nostrils.

The tang slowly faded and mixed with the cold nightly breeze, flowing through the shattered windows.

My left hand was still bleeding.

In the center of the devastation, right before me, sat a cute, grey lizard, about twice my size, with tiny wings, curiously checking its surroundings.

Then looking straight at me with big, round, puppy-eyes.

A new status screen opened up before me:

While I pondered what the hell could be wrong with her Random Resist Stat of 2, she jumped on me.

She was so heavy, I almost couldn’t breathe.

She began to lick some of the blood from my wound, then incinerated my left hand.

I waved my hand around in panic, trying to extinguish the flame, while she slowly pulled back, allowing me to move freely again.

My attempts to quell the seemingly magical flames had no success.

At first, I thought the shock had numbed the supposedly searing pain.

Yet, as my hand continued to burn, the wound began to close and the stinging pain from the former cut vanished.

Huh.

Must be that Phoenix Fire Skill.

Guess it’s a healing Spell.

Pretty neat.

“Thank you.” I patted her head. “Good girl.”

“What the hell?” my enraged ‘mother’ Aurora, stood in the blown out door frame.

“You little bastard, what have you done?” she asked.

A shocked maid stood beside her, trying to calm her down. To no avail.

Aurora stomped into the room, raised her right arm and brought it down in an arc, aiming straight at my head.

My body cowered on instinct.

Her hand came crashing down on me, or rather, it should have, but instead of me, Aurora screeched out in pain.

“Gaarrr!” My new draconic buddy had chomped down on her right fist.

Aurora tried to free herself. In vain. She couldn’t even lift her arm back up. Instead, she stood crouched over, struggling to keep her balance.

In the meantime, Alfred and our second maid had arrived at the scene.

I got up, held onto my Familiar, and tried to get her to calm down and release my ‘mother’.

She did so immediately.

Aurora, freed from the bite, stumbled backwards, tripped over the rubble and almost fell down.

Alfred stopped her before she could seriously injure herself.

She struggled to break free, but Alfred held her back, while he tried to calm her down.

One of the maids meanwhile left to attend to my still crying sister in another room.

My Familiar had positioned herself between me and Aurora.

“It’s okay…” I said.

It was at this point that I realized that she still had no name.

Fafnir… Bahamut… those were males, right?

What about Tiamat?

“How does ‘Tia’ sound for a name?” I asked while I patted her head once more.

She turned around and nodded with a smile. Then jumped on me again, rubbing her face against mine.

Man, she was heavy.

Better keep that last comment to myself. Not something someone should tell a lady to her face.

With the question of whether or not to sell the egg eliminated for good, the following days saw the mood in the house calm back down.

My ‘mother’ resumed her regular drug-fuelled misadventures with the local delinquents, while I tried to teach myself how to read.

Memorizing new stuff came surprisingly naturally.

It seemed my new body probably had more influence on my mind than I’d like to admit.

Still, I was suddenly unsure of my thoughts. If I was influenced in that way… what else had changed?

Speaking of change, we now had one additional maid in the house.

Tia, while using her Transform Skill, was learning the ropes from the other two maids and Alfred.

Her human form had silver grey hair, not unlike my own, but she looked like she was in her early to mid teens. And her appearance kept maturing fast.

As for her behaviour, with her Random Power of 137 and Random Resist 2, she truly put the chaos in Chaos Dragon.

She was in the middle of cleaning the living room for the third time (don’t even ask what she did on her first two attempts) when she began to sing and hum a familiar theme.

“Makin' my way up sky, flyin' fast. Dragons pass…” She sang, followed by: “nana na na… nana na na…”

“Those aren’t even the lyrics,” I said, shaking my head.

Tia pondered for a moment, before she countered. “Hey, you don't remember the right lyrics either!”

“How are you even?” I asked.

“The blood,” she said. ”Don’t worry, your…” she paused, then smiled. “Our secrets are safe with me.”

She remained silent for a second, before speaking up again. “But don’t you dare think I am fat again!”
