Chapter 27:

Vengeful Sun

Fantastical Rebirth

Slinger: "This is not going to work."

Sun: "Listen to me, Slinger. Why would I risk everyone's lives for a plan I'm not sure will work out?"

Slinger: "Because you can try again. We can't."

Sun: "I am not going to leave you behind."

Slinger: "Where's your proof? Even if you don't want this to fail, what happens if it does?"

Sun: "Well... with Miguel's secret weapon and yours, there is no way he's going to survive."

Slinger: "We can die too."

Sun: "We just have to be faster."

I breathe slowly to concentrate.

Sun: "Miguel, can you call the creature?"

Miguel: "Sure thing."

A tremor begins. The aquatic worm emerges in the distance.

Sun: "Make it look real."

D flies toward the worm, shooting blue fire into the water, creating a path of ice for us. He continues flying and fires a massive fireball, which explodes upon hitting the creature. I skate on the ice as Nebula flies beside me.

I punch the worm harder than before, for we are stronger this time. Nebula uses her book of shadows to fire purple tentacles that ensnare the creature.

I block my side opposite to the beach with my arm. Sol kicks me with great strength. My arm breaks, but the rest of my body is okay. I fly to the beach and lie down on the sand, pretending I can't move. Nebula lands beside me. This time, D is in the sky. Sol lands in front of us.

As expected, Slinger aims her pistol at Miguel.

Sun: "Slinger, what the fuck?!"

Sol: "I heard your power was related to fire. Why aren't you using it? Is your other ability blocking it?"

Sun: "Other ability...?"

Sol: "Don't play dumb. I know you can into the future."

Sun: "How...?"

Sol: "Slinger told me. You knew she was targeting the ninja."

Sun: "That was intuition..."

Sol: "Could you coincidentally spot a sniper hundreds of meters away?"

Sun: "The food we were eating... sharpened our senses."

Sol: "Really? That must be really good food. I'll try it after I'm done with you."

He walks up to me and points the Excalibur at me.

Sol: "Do you understand why your fire is weak against me? Because the sun chose me, not you. Your name is a fraud. You were chosen by the goddess, not the sun."

Slinger summons a grenade from her Stocker and throws it at Sol. He notices it before it hits him. He swings his sword, which I push away by shooting with the ice weapon, which explodes in my hand. The sword flies into the sky, and D catches it with his Stocker.

The grenade glows brightly, beckoning the sun. Four enormous rays of sunlight fall from the sky, far apart. They begin to converge on a single point: where the grenade floats. The rays burn the water and earth with great intensity, approaching where we are.

D flies toward Miguel and Slinger, grabbing them and returning to the sky. Miguel's sand woman grabs Nebula and me and flies away as well. Sol grabs Nebula's foot. She summons a magic circle of intense wind and pushes him back to the epicenter of the beam.

They converge into a single, massive beam that devastates the entire landscape. We narrowly escape, crashing into the sand dozens of kilometers away. We slowly stand up, exhausted.

Slinger: "He's not dead yet..."

Something approaches us at great speed. I position myself in front of my crew, blocking the attack with both arms. Sol punches me and breaks both of them, sending me flying. D flies to catch me, but Sol grabs his wing and rips it off. They both fall to the sand. He gets up, all burned.

Sol: "Was that your plan?! Didn't I just tell you I was chosen by the sun?! You can't kill me with rays of sunlight!"

He dodges a bullet coming from behind. Tentacles try to grab him, but he leaps back and avoids them. He lands back on the sand, behind Slinger and Nebula.

Sol: "And you, Slinger, I'm disappointed in you. I paid you in advance, I trusted you, and this is how you repay me? By helping my creator? The one who didn't even care about his own son?!"

Nebula fires a volley of true ice shards from her staff, summoning bubbles of water behind him and exploding them. Slinger fires her bow at the trees, and the arrows ricochet and hit him, but do little damage. She shoots a barrage of missiles, which Sol dodges and darts towards Slinger.

D blows blue fire, which slows him down a bit. Miguel's sand warrior hits him with his shield, pushing him closer to us. I pull him back with my metal gauntlet as I heat it. D breathes fire at him. I use my ice sword to defend myself. He swings his hand at the blade, destroying it and hitting me in the face. I lose consciousness for a moment.

When I wake up, the sand begins to sink. It floats in the air and falls in the form of spikes. The sand woman swallows Sol with a tornado. I slowly get up, both arms still broken. Purple tentacles and bullets fly into the tornado. I jump toward it and punch Sol in the face. He falls to the sand.

He stands up. I extend my gauntlets, which he blocks with his arm armor. The impact sends shockwaves and vibrations. He quickly approaches me. I use my broken ice sword and swing it, delivering an incomplete frozen blow. He leaps, dodging. When he's above me, D punches him away.

Nebula steps in front of me and launches a massive explosion in his direction. Rockets and sand spikes fly toward him. D hands me Excalibur. I point at Sol, launching a massive beam of sunlight that devastates the beach once more. After it subsides, his body becomes visible, even more burned than usual, but still standing.

He cracks his shoulders and starts walking towards us.

Sun: "I'm exhausted... go away, leave him to me. Miguel, use the weapon."

Nebula: "We won't leave you behind."

Miguel: "Don't play hero now, Sun. You're coming with us."

The sand warrior throws his sword at Sol to buy time. Nebula grabs me and D and flies into the sky. The sand woman grabs Miguel and Slinger and also flies away. The warrior slams into Sol with his shield, but the adventurer runs through him and leaps at us.

D breathes blue fire, increasing our speed and decreasing Sol's. Nebula fires tentacles to restrain him. He runs over them and leaps toward Miguel and Slinger. She fires rockets at him, which he blocks with his arm armor. When he gets close enough, something grabs Sol with its mouth.

It's the phoenix. It flies away from us at top speed and spits Sol onto the sand. Before he can get up, the bird begins to create a huge fireball. We fly faster to avoid the attack. The phoenix releases the fireball, devastating the entire landscape with an explosion larger than a nuclear one.
