Chapter 1:

Summoned

Getting trapped in a card game world and learning the meta to becoming a Cardian

Yusuke walked out of his local card store hurriedly as they pushed him out. The store was technically past closing but let players finish their games as the shop closed. It didn't help that Yusuke had pushed the manager to sell him one last pack after the register had been put away. He held onto the three packs he had bought with the cash on hand, he even told them to keep the change as a small apology for keeping the store open too long.

He opened the three packs hoping to get lucky and get a copy of the card he needed for a new jank deck he wanted to build. He could have bought that card instead of three random packs but found his own sense of gambling too strong to resist. The first two packs were duds but managed to find an ultra rare that was worth something. He tried to get a sleeve from out of his bag as he walked and almost dropped the collection of new cards on the ground when he tripped on an uneven sidewalk.

He did drop his bag and his deck box containing extra sleeves fell out. He also dropped a thin promo pack for an unfamiliar game that he guessed must have been hiding in the packs when the store gave it to him.

"Did the store give me a promotional pack by accident?"

Yusuke didn't remember a promotion going on for the game or for the store. Moreover the pack didn't seem to be for the game he bought but an indie card game. Rather the promo pack only had the word "Cardian" on it.

"Must be the name of the game. Never heard of it"

He opened the pack hoping that the card layout might jog his memory about what the game was as he had often scrolled the internet whenever a new card game came out.

[Divine: Holy Retribution]
[Action] [Rank: 0] [Divine]
[This card can be played from hand by discarding another card. When an opponent declares an attack on you or one of your units, destroy all of their units and end their turn.]
{Art: A Cross of light with a monster being obliterated in the middle of the cross}

"Huh?"

The layout didn't seem to strike a cord with him and looking over the elements of the card didn't make things any clearer. The back of the card had the same sleek design as the packaging of the promo pack with the word "Cardian" in the center.

As Yusuke looked over the design of the card again he thought the shiny holographic of the card was reflecting a streetlight when a flash of white light covered the card. However, soon he found that the card was emitting a light that grew in intensity and dropped the card on accident to the ground.

"What the hey?"

The light covered Yusuke's eyes almost completely as he tried to block the light with his arms. He tripped again this time falling backwards away from the light as he fell. But instead of hitting concrete, he kept falling, the light still covering his vision. He felt wind blow in his hair and his clothing as he reached terminal velocity. He felt the world pass him by as he kept falling until he stopped falling but didn't hit the ground.

Yusuke was floating, he was sure of that. It was an odd sense of weightlessness but also a sense of gravity knowing which way he was suppose to fall but didn't. He didn't realized he had also closed his eyes so when he opened them the sight confused him entirely.

Gone was the buildings nearby the card shop or even the streets of park cars and moving vehicles. In their place was a graveyard with several tombstone's and crypts nearby a large stone structure like a communal building. The area had several bushes a flame with small fires that looked to have been started from some sort of explosion as debris laid scattered everywhere around him. Some of the debris looked to be human remains or bones.

The most striking thing that caught his attention however was the hooded figure surrounded by half a dozen shambling figures that looked like the undead from a classic horror movie. The hooded figure looked around and seemed unable to see Yusuke at first, passing him in its glance but then the head turns back and focuses on him making eye contact.

"What manner of Spirit is this? The boy's spirit? But no he is not dead. Yet"

The hooded figure head move enough to show his hidden head. It was a cattle skull with red lights in the pits of its eyes that acted as eyeballs looking around. Its eyes focused on another body that Yusuke had not seen as it was almost directly under him.

A young tan skinned boy in a set of colourful robes with a golden center at his chest that stretched out to the bottom of his robes and sleeves. On his left hand, over his robes was a large metallic bracer with three gemstones embedded in the metal. He wore a bandana that kept his messy hair back and was currently knocked out as he breathed shallowly.

"Woah what the? Hey what's going on here? Skeleton man, what is-"

"The summoner managed to call forth a spirit to aid him. No matter it will be simple to crush it without a Cardian present"

Cow skull moved its bony hand out and grasped the air in front of its self like it was grabbing Yusuke from his perspective. But Yusuke felt a force, an unseen power take hold of him.

That was when he noticed his own body, it was floating nearly 7 feet off the ground but his hand and body were transparent and he could make out details through his body. The force that was grabbing him could be slightly seen but as a silhouette of a hand that was grabbing onto him.

"Hey what are you doing that for I just got here"

"No matter what the summoner intended to do with you spirit, it will not matter when I crush you with my Infernal Grip"

The force started to crush Yusuke's body and he felt like he was about to die. That was when he felt a second force on him, a tugging force toward s the body below him. Feeling no other option he tried to yank on the other force like a rope but with his mind.

A sudden pulling force slipped him out of the unseen hand's grip as he woke up and opened his eyes a second time to see the same graveyard but from the ground instead of floating. He looked at his body again but it was much different than the view he was expecting. Instead of his own body transparent, he saw an entirely different body fully visible but in his control.

"What am I? Am I in the dead guy's body?"

"It seems the summoner was correct in summoning you. A spirit that can take over another's body like this is unprecedented."

It appeared to be true. Yusuke had been pulled into the boy's body and was moving around as him. The skeleton looked at  Yusuke and pointed at the metallic bracer attached to the left arm.

"It seems that you have your own soul to wager in a duel. Very well when I am done with you I will rip out your soul and bring it back to my master. He will be interested in a spirit that can possess Cardains."

Just as the skeleton man declared to duel Yusuke, a command window like form a video game or computer appeared before Yusuke.

'A Duel has been demanded by Tor the Necromancer.
Do you accept or forfeit?
(Forfeiting will result in the following ante, your spirit will be in complete control of Tor.)'

"I think I've lost my mind"
