Chapter 0:

Preconceived Misconceptions

Of Silk and Feathers

Jak was the outcast of the village of Shifafuh. Called a "freak" by the weird bird people of his town,
He wanted more than anything to prove to the rest of the birds in the village the he deserved to be respected and live like a normal person in the village.

The other birds mocked him, for he was clearly a bird, but as to what kind, anybody is to say. His egg was found one rainy morning in a rather interesting spot for a bird, buried in the ground in the grass . His egg was rather large, however ,too small to be a gallant gracefully guardian swan, or even that of a barbaric uncivilized turkey. The brown speckled egg would have been a sight to see if a storm was not brewing that day.

The same kind of storm was brewing today. Jak sighed and stopped day dreaming about his days first day in the village, when all he could see was darkness and all he could hear was the sound of the rain. Things were simpler then, he didn't have to worry about what others would say about him, or what loneliness was back then, only the darkness, and only the rain.

There was a something else in the sky that day besides that rain, and that is the very reason the Shifoos had come to actually talk to to Jak today.

It started with a sound. At first everyone thought it was thunder, but then the sound become more rhythmic, like a drum beat. A green light burst from the sky as strands of white hair engulfed the sky, creating a circus tent like structure. In the center a large monster could be seen emerging from the light in the center of the tent. Leaves of the sacred tree started ascending the the sky as the creature and the web-tent descended and plunged into the center of town.

The Shifoos in a panic and fright ran to used to be the graveyard, which now was the garden of Kuro Kujaku.

"You must help us, you are the biggest bird in the village" the pled to him.

"What about Jaiiro Hakusho, his is bigger than i am, and a swan, is he not fit to protect your village?" Jak retorted

"We considered that, but he is far to valuable to us." Said the old village owl " If he were to be slain, the village would be helpless. It would be best if somebody like you could take care of the beast."

"Someone like me?" Jak laughed in disbelief " What do you mean somebody like me?"

"Please Kuro, you are the only one who can defeat the horrible black beast!" the owl cried

Jak looked down at his black feathers, realizing why they were so adamant that it had to be him. Heartbroken, but not wanting to took defeated, he closed his eye, took a breath and spoke.

" If i do this, you will recognize me, and any of those with any feather color will be welcome in Shifafuh"

"oo hoo hoo, yess" chuckled the owl, " If you go into the village for us, then i guarantee that any feathered friend will be welcomed in the village, shucks be him crow, one of them tiny little blackbirds, of even mercy to heavens  a raven" the owl hooted and laughed himself on the floor.

Jak scowled at the crowd then looked at the owl, and for a moment he could feel as if he injected the owl with a terrible fear. Everything swirled around for a moment, and went dark.

"You are the hunter, you hunt beasts to protect the people, for they are but prey in this dangerous world"  says a voice in the darkness.

Everything snapped back to normal, Jak's head pounding, confused as to what just happened, he quickly composed himself and ran towards Shifafuh.

As he approached the center of town, everything covered in a white gooey, clothlike material covered everything. It was like whit hair that had been weaved together into strong ropes.

The creature was unlike anything Jak had ever seen. It kind of looked like a big Ant to him. The sacred tree housed Ant people and other insectoids, Jak had met a few but this thing was weird.Ants were smaller than birds, half the size, they came in red or brown fur, or atleast all of the ones that Jak had seen leaving the village checkpoint exit into the interior of the tree.

The creature was still, and Jak didnt feel threatened by it, though its massive size. It had more arms than an ant, but less segments. The monster seemed to be sleeping, and snoring, revealing two large fangs but no other teeth. It clucked its stomach where green rock shined hypnotically.

Jak got close to the thing, more curious than scared." Insectoids usually have big eyes, or atleast a lot of them, i can't really tell how many it has while this thing is sleeping" He said  to himself.

"I have four eyes, and i guess they are really big, but thats just because everything here is so small " said a feminine voice

"Who said that" Jak jumped back and readied himself.

"Look man, im really dont want to fight, i just got my ass handed to me" the voice annoyingly shouted from the green rock

Jak laughed "Wait, this thing is you?

"Don't laugh! Yes its me, and i will have you know im quite beautiful to my people, in fact im a princess"

Jak chuckled " You sure don't look like one, but say i believe what you are saying, is the monster a princess or the green rock?"

"Don't call me a monster!"

"Okay okay, so can you explain please?" Jak forgetting about the hairy behemoth that snored infront of him for a second.

"Thats my exostomach,it can get really big if i eat enough, but  all of my squishy bits and real important stuff  is  here in this Emerald" She explained

"What if i take the Emerald out of your stomach?"

"Honestly, i would be pleased"

"Won't it Kill you?"

"Isn't that why you are here?

"i guess, but i don't see any reason to hurt you, let alone kill you"

" I could have killed you at any time sir"

"It seems to me like you are stuck"

"Ok so i ate too much and im stuck, is that what you want to hear"

From the distance a faint orange light and laughing  interrupted their banter. The elder owl had come to torch the village.

" I will get rid of you, just like i did all the other dark creatures of the night"
