The goods were then set on a transport carriage, which was driven by two of the ground dragons that were kept inside the barn.
Even though Hope had been irresponsible until then, she seemed pretty hyped up for the task.
I had no clue how to ride a horse in my own world, let alone steer ground dragons, so Hope took the role of handling the cart.
The grandparents made our tasks very clear: all we had to do was deliver the potatoes to certain places and call it a day.
The distance between the grandparents’ house and the town was just about 2 km, and it took us little time to get there. Unexpectedly, Hope—who had shown no interest in the town when we passed by together with Zar—was very accustomed to its layout.
The moment we got into town, with Hope steering the dragons, I heard a loud yell calling out, “Hope!!” which took me by surprise.
And in no time, we were surrounded by both humans and other races.
“Hope, how have you been?”“You look as pretty as always!”“Are you here on an errand!?”
She was very popular… and once again I sat speechless.
There are many things I don’t understand about this world, but the biggest of them all is how the grandparents and the townspeople know the name Hope.
I once joked about how I could have an ability that lets me know everything, but now it’s starting to sound credible. Or maybe she used her magic on me, which allowed me to pick her birth name when she asked me to name her.
Some of the people went back to their work as we moved further into town, but a few of them followed as if escorting us to the farm produce market.
Even though I wasn’t the one they were happy to see, I still acted friendly with a smile so as not to stand out as unsociable.
Five minutes after getting into town, we made our first stop at a large restaurant. By then, five people from the town were tagging along with us—two humans and three demi-humans.
From the finely designed wooden restaurant, a man with a big mustache and an apron tied at his waist came out from the front door in a welcoming manner.
“Oh Hope, it’s been a while, hasn’t it? I didn’t know you’d returned. How are your grandparents? Have they been doing well?”
“Yes… they sent their greetings,” she replied, almost as if it were part of her daily routine.
While they were talking, four of the people who had followed us took out five baskets from the carriage. I didn’t know what was going on, and just as I was about to yell “Thieves!!” one of them came to the man in front of us and said, “Boss, we’ve taken the five baskets.”
“Thank you for your hard work,” he said as he put his hand in his pocket and brought out a small bag, which he handed to Hope.
I see now. Those guys must have been sent to check if the potatoes had arrived. No wonder they kept following us.As Hope took the bag, the man smiled. “Say hello to your grandparents for me. I’ll be waiting for the other goods.”
“I’ll make sure to tell them. Have a nice day,” Hope replied as she pulled the saddle.
Wow, that was quick. I didn’t even know the transaction was taking place. “They must be old customers,” I thought as I looked back and found a bunny-eared girl still tagging along with us.
Now I get it. Those four were workers of that restaurant, and this girl must be from where we’re going next.
The girl wore an orange dress that reached just to her knees, and her long ears stood erect as she moved.
I wonder if her tail can be seen from behind…
And with that thought, I quickly faced forward to avoid being labeled as a pervert.
Not long after we dropped the five baskets, we arrived at the market, and the girl who had been following us rushed ahead into a tent that was presumably her mother’s.
“Mom, I’ve brought them!” I heard her say as Hope parked in the middle of the road.
Her mother then came out, greeted us, and at the same time asked for help unloading the baskets.
She looked mature, and if it weren’t for the bunny ears, I wouldn’t have guessed she was the girl’s mother. On the other hand, the girl was a bit clumsy while unloading the baskets—she dropped two of them and almost fell out of the carriage once.
It was only my third day in this world, but things had already started getting interesting.
We dropped fifteen baskets at their tent, and all that remained was one final stop in the next town of Rogo, which was not more than six kilometers away.
The trip there was peaceful. We passed locals carrying out their daily lives, just like ordinary people should, and in about half an hour, we arrived at the town of Rogo.
Hope explained to me that the closer a town is to the capital, the more developed it is. And just as she said, Rogo had fewer humans than Gagi, with demi-humans making up most of the population.
While we were talking about geography, Hope took the time to explain some things to me.
The country we are in is called Zurunzek. It possesses a power unrivaled in the whole world, making it one of this world’s superpowers.
The country wasn’t always this big, and only a few people of other races were citizens. But everything changed forty-two years ago, when it obtained a godlike power in the form of an eighteen-year-old girl who could kill thousands of fighters without raising a single finger.
From then on, they acquired other powers from two more people, which allowed them to dominate the world, taking whatever they pleased.
As a result, they conquered all the neighboring nations and merged them into one country, with the original land becoming the capital. Right now, there are four nations surrounding Zurunzek, each home to a different race.
From my knowledge of games, a single hero is usually summoned to defeat the demon lord. But this world is different. Here, there are five demon lords and one demon queen, and as a result, there are ten heroes in this country alone—each capable of defeating a demon lord by himself, if the demons weren’t so overpowered.Although that would be the most logical plot, the demon lords here are nothing like the ones found in fantasy games. Because of the demon queen, their strength increases exponentially, making them difficult to defeat even by two or more heroes together.
Our journey to Rogo was swift. We went directly to the market and met with our customer, to whom we delivered the remaining ten baskets.
Because the grandparents didn’t live in Gagi, we had no reason to go back there. Instead, we took another road that led directly to the capital.
On the way back, I asked Hope to give me the bags of money we received so that I could see the currency used in this world.
We received three bags altogether, each about the size of a pouch or larger. The one we received from the restaurant owner was the smallest in both size and weight, followed by the bag we received in Rogo, and finally the one from the bunny-eared woman.
From their weight and the sound they made, I could clearly tell they were coins.
When I opened them, I found silver coins about 1.5 centimeters in diameter. The first bag contained fifty silver coins, the second 150, and the last one a hundred.
One hundred silver coins are equivalent to one gold coin, but according to Hope, gold coins are mostly used in the capital.
Hope had been excited about selling the potatoes even before we left home, so thanks to her good mood, I managed to get some information from her.
But I still couldn’t bring myself to ask why I was summoned here—or whether I had any abilities.
When we got home, the sun had already set, and the grandparents were very happy to see us return safely without any issues.
It was the first time I had worked that hard in my whole life, so it was only natural that I felt completely fatigued by the time I got home.
As such, I went to bed after taking a shower immediately after dinner.
The next day was the same as the previous one, except that this time we were to sell carrots and cabbages, and the cart was loaded to its fullest.
Unlike the previous day, we went to Gagi town and met with different customers than before.
This time, we weren’t directed to Rogo but instead headed to the first town we had visited four days ago, when we traveled with Zar.
Back then, I hadn’t asked the name of the town, but this time Grandpa told me it was called Marna.
It was the same town where I had first seen that demi-human woman farming.
This time we didn’t waste much time, since Marna was farther away from Gagi. On the way there, Hope and I talked about things related to this world.
Everything was fine until we found a large stone blocking the road in the middle of nowhere.
It hadn’t been there the last time we passed, so it looked very suspicious. My heart began pounding with fear of what might happen next.
And as if waiting for us to approach, three men with short swords jumped out from behind the rock, while another peeked from cover, aiming at us with a bow.“Whadda we ’ave ’ere…?” the shirtless big guy who looked like their leader grinned as he got closer to our carriage.
The other two—one with an eye patch, the other missing two fingers on his left hand—walked behind the big man, weapons ready.
Frozen, I stared at them as they approached, unable to move a muscle.
I thought it was definitely over, until Hope suddenly jumped off the cart and spread her arms wide to block me from the robbers.
“Stealing during Mighty Week… You guys are the lowest of scum!”
As if she had hit a nerve, the big guy grew furious and charged at her with his short sword in his left hand. “Die, you bitch!!”
But before he could reach her—and before I could even process what was happening—I was suddenly in front of his sword, hugging Hope tightly so the blade would strike me instead.
Then everything went silent. I could clearly hear her voice as she whispered, “It’s okay…”
When I finally opened my eyes, I was still hugging her, but there was no pain in my back.
I turned toward the robbers—and saw they were frozen in place, as if time had stopped.
“What is going on?” I asked, my voice trembling as I looked at Hope.
“They won’t attack anyone from now on… I promise.”
Her words confused me, but then it hit me—did she intend to kill them?
“No, Hope, don’t do it…” I grabbed her hand, trying to stop her, but she only smiled and said, “Don’t worry. I won’t lay a finger on them.”
And just as she said that, their bodies returned to normal and they could move again.
But instead of attacking, they froze and stared at Hope in terror.
“You will never attack anyone again. You will live your lives honestly from now on… and you will help anyone who asks for your help.”
Standing behind Hope, I expected some resistance from them. I was about to step forward when I heard a heavy thud—the robbers had dropped to their knees.
“We’ll never attack anyone ever again, we promise!!” Even the elf who had been aiming an arrow at us from behind the rock joined them.
I didn’t know what was going on. Was it magic? Or something else?
She hadn’t chanted any words. She hadn’t even moved a finger. All she did was order them, and they obeyed.
Afterward, Hope ordered them to move the rock. One of them even used earth magic to help.
Without delay, we continued our journey as if nothing had happened.
Hope didn’t bring up the incident, but on our way back from Marna, after delivering the goods to an old man, I couldn’t resist asking if she had used magic on them.
“That was not magic. I simply ordered them and they obeyed… Magic… I don’t want to use my magic… I can’t use it.”
She certainly hadn’t used any visible magic since I arrived in this world. But why did she say she couldn’t use it?
So I teased her. “Oh, I get it. There are those whose magic is weak, right? Can’t be helped if yours is like that… Haha!”But her reaction wasn’t playful at all.
“It’s too strong… I can’t use my magic because it’s too powerful. Powerful enough to destroy the whole world without anyone stopping it.”
What…?
That was the first time she ever looked serious since I met her.
But since she couldn’t prove what she said, I just assumed she had some kind of complex. Like those people who claim they could destroy the world if some seal on their hand were ever removed.
“…I’m sorry I dragged you into this, but this world needs you. Without you, this world will surely cease to exist. I’m sorry I haven’t told you anything yet, but in order to fully understand your role, you must seek the truth yourself. Otherwise, you’ll only be following someone’s ideals.
Your journey hasn’t started yet—these are just the introductions. Only when Mighty Week ends will you get a real taste of this cruel world. I’m sorry in advance for all the harsh experiences waiting for you.”
After that conversation, our journey back home was silent. The mood turned heavy, and my brain overheated trying to understand the meaning behind her words.
But as soon as I got home, I tried to relieve the stress with a hot bath and a delicious meal prepared by Grandma. Even if the week ends… I’m sure things will work out somehow.
And just like that, my fourth day ended. The fifth and sixth days were also filled with farming and selling produce. But on the seventh day, when only hours remained until the week’s end—everything changed.
