The Fateful Event

Late in the night, the city has barely anyone out on its streets. The cold, hard, orderly structures surround a young man as he makes his way home after a long day. He walks down the same route he has been for years, and could practically do it solely through muscle memory.

As he absentmindedly makes his way through the city, he laments his life, how boring and repetitive it's become. Wake up, go to work, go home, sleep. Day after day it was the same routine, over and over again. Food no longer tasted good, games were no longer fun, and life felt close to no longer being worth it.

With his wireless earbuds in, he listens to songs that used to excite him, acting as the soundtrack to the imaginary adventures he comes up with in his head. 

‘If only my life could be like an actual adventure...’ he thought to himself.

He steps across a dark street close to his apartment, completely ignoring the red stop signal on the other side. There were never any cars this late at night, there was no point in waiting.

But with his eyes glazed over, and his ears blasted with music, he completely fails to notice the massive truck rapidly approaching him. The truck driver tries to swerve out of the way, but it’s too late.
