Chapter 7:
Beyond the Gate: A Lost Soul's Journey
When we arrived at the merit centre, we found that there were many people there who looked adventurous.
Compared to them, who were dressed in their best clothes, we looked like novices.
Well.
We are novices.
We looked at the requests on the wall and searched for the easiest ones.
“Okan, look at this one; it looks easy-nya.”
I read what the paper said.
Something about it seemed strange to me.
The reward was extremely high for what the mission appeared to entail.
We just had to take care of a child for a day.
Just for babysitting, we would get a hundred merit points.
I haven't been in this world for long, but I know perfectly well that this is a lot.
“Don't you think it's strange, Yui?”
“Maybe they're just parents desperate for a break-nya.”
“You might be right…”
An address was written below the reward.
“It's not very far from here-nya”
“Sorry, I haven't learnt the streets around here yet.”
“Just follow me-nya.”
We asked the bartender for a copy of the paper, then left to go to the address written on it.
“We should have left Aixa a note. We left without saying anything, and now we're going to be gone for a whole day.”
“Don't worry-nya! We'll make it up to her with food.”
We stopped in front of a gate protecting a huge house.
It had a large courtyard with a ceramic fountain.
“Is this it?”
“That's what the paper says-nya.”
There was a doorbell on one of the iron bars that made up the gate.
“Are we going to do the mission today?”
“Yes, nya. We didn't run away from Aixa's house just to come back empty-handed.”
“Okay.”
I pressed the doorbell and took a step back to wait for someone to answer.
The doorbell melody had not finished ringing when the door opened inside.
“Have you come for the petition!?”
A red-haired man appeared in the doorway, wearing a shirt and a military-style vest.
“Yes. We're sorry we came after lunchtime. Can we still do the mission, or should we come back tomorrow?”
“Of course! Come in, come in.”
The man walked along the stone path dividing the courtyard in two towards the gate.
After searching for a moment, he took a bunch of keys out of his pocket, opened the gate and let us in.
The inside of the house smelled wonderful.
The décor was perfectly neat, too.
There wasn't a speck of dust on the furniture.
As we walked through the hallways, I saw several servants, both male and female, passing by.
They were all wearing maid outfits.
“We're not going to dress like that, are we?”
“Ha, ha, ha! Don't be silly. Of course you are. It's the work uniform.”
“Nya! That can't be!”
“Of course it can. It says so on the poster.”
“Hey, Yui, could you pass me the paper for a moment?”
Sure enough, the information was there.
But it was written in a square in the margin of the sheet.
Anyone would think it was just decoration.
“Yui... This humiliation is worth the merit.”
“Of course it is! A hundred of merit is too much-nya.”
“It looks like we have no choice. Let's do it for Aixa.”
“For Aixa-nya.”
We arrived at the kitchen.
There, we met the gentleman's wife:
She was a young woman with brown hair that reached her hips.
Seeing the two of them together, it was clear that the gentleman seemed much older than his wife.
Well, they are both older.
“Honey, you got the babysitters.”
“That's right, my love.' Today is the day.”
“Excuse me, but what day is today? But what day is it today?”
“Thanks to you two, I can finally go out with my wife today.”
“For taking care of your son?”
“Exactly.”
“But it seems like you have more than enough staff-nya.”
“Ha, ha, ha! How ignorant you are, young lady! Human-dragon hybrids are very demanding in their early years.”
“Human-dragon hybrids?”
“That's what I said.”
I'm beginning to understand why the reward for this request was so high.
“What exactly do we have to do?”
“Take care of and entertain our son.”
“Is there anything important we should know?”
“Nothing.”
“Give us a moment.”
I took Yui by the arm and pulled her into a corner of the kitchen.
“Yui, do you know anything about dragons?”
“Nothing-nya. There were no dragons in my world.”
We're already here.
We can't back out now.
My pride won't allow it.
But... Come to think of it, I couldn't even handle Aixa's pet dragon.
How are we going to handle a dragon?
Besides, I was never good with children in my previous life.
“Yui... There are two tasks and two of us. Do you understand what I mean?”
“I think so, nya. Take care of him and keep him entertained.”
“I'm not going to wear the maid outfit, so you can wear both of them.”
“That's a non sequitur!”
“No, it 's not.”
Just as my pride prevents me from giving up on this mission, it won't allow me to dress up as a maid.
“Think about it: maid outfits are proportional to the number of tasks.”
“That's just a coincidence, nya!”
“How much are you two talking? You're not thinking of running away, are you?”
The lady of the house interrupted us.
I didn't notice her approach.
“No...”
“Good! Then let's not delay any longer.”
She snapped her fingers, and immediately two maids arrived, each carrying a bag.
“Please accept this gift.”
It was now the master who was speaking to us.
I took the bag; it was extremely light.
Wait a minute.
I think I know what this is.
It was a mistake to accept it.
“Now, the maids will show you to the dressing room. Once you've changed, you can go and meet our son. We're leaving now.”
It was an ambush.
I let my guard down.
I've been too relaxed recently; my senses are getting rusty.
“It looks like I have no choice, Yui.”
“Don't worry, I'll send Aixa lots of photos-nya.”
“Shouldn't you be reassuring me!?”
We arrived at the dressing room. It was a large, sparsely decorated space. The only feature was a flimsy curtain dividing the room in two.
I suppose this was to keep men and women apart.
“Don't even think about spying on Yui-nya. If you do, I'll rip your eyes out-nya.”
“I wasn't going to anyway; don't threaten me. There's still a lot I want to see in this world.”
I opened my bag and found what would finally bury my pride.
“Yui... Do we have no chance of escape?”
“No, we just have to accept our fate.”
“Next time we need merit, let's read the small print.”
