Chapter 2:

The Gift of The Stars

Starlight Equilibrium

The silence that followed the Nushi’s retreat was heavy, broken only by the gentle rustling of leaves and the soft chirping of crickets. The crimson hues of the setting sun had faded, replaced by the deep indigo of twilight.  Sakura remained kneeling beside Kai, her hands still glowing faintly as she continued to channel her Astral energy, ensuring his wound was completely healed.Kai watched her, his gaze filled with a mixture of awe and gratitude.  "Thank you, Sakura," he said, his voice still a little weak. "You… you saved me."Sakura looked up at him, her violet eyes filled with concern. "Sakura glad Kai okay," she replied, her voice soft.  The purple light faded from her hands, and she slumped back slightly, exhaustion evident in her posture.  "Nushi… very strong."Kai nodded, his hand instinctively going to the side where the Nushi’s claws had ripped into his flesh.  There was no trace of the wound now, just smooth, unbroken skin.  "Yeah," he agreed. "It was… terrifying."  He glanced at the Dragon sword, lying nearby.  The dragon's head seemed to gleam in the fading light, as if it were watching him.  He felt a strange connection to the blade, a sense of power simmering beneath the surface.Sakura noticed his gaze. "Your swords… very special," she said, her voice thoughtful.  "Sakura feel… power."Kai frowned. "I don't know anything about them," he admitted. "I don't remember… anything."
Sakura's expression softened. "Sakura understand.  Lost memories… very sad."  She reached out and gently touched his arm.  "But you not alone now.  Sakura here."Kai smiled, a genuine smile that reached his eyes.  "Thanks, Sakura.  I appreciate it."A comfortable silence settled between them, the shared experience of the battle forging a bond between them.  Kai looked around at the Whispering Woods, the trees now shrouded in the darkness of night.  "Where are we?" he asked."Whispering Woods," Sakura repeated.  "Between Elcor and… other places."  She hesitated, as if reluctant to say more."Elcor?" Kai asked. "Is that… a town?"Sakura nodded.  "Sakura live in Elcor.  Grams… she wait for Sakura."  A flicker of worry crossed her face.  "Sakura late."Kai stood up, testing his healed side.  He felt a little sore, but otherwise, he was fine.  "Let's go then," he said. "I don't have anywhere else to go."Sakura smiled.  "Sakura happy.  You come to Elcor.  Grams… she very kind."
As they began to walk through the darkening woods, Kai couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched.  The forest seemed to hum with a hidden energy, a sense of ancient power that both intrigued and unnerved him.  He glanced back at the spot where they had fought the Nushi.  The creature was gone, but the air still crackled with residual magic."Sakura," he said, "what was that… thing? The Nushi?""Nushi," Sakura repeated.  "Creature of darkness.  Very dangerous.  They… they hunt at night." Kai paused for a few seconds to look around."But it’s daytime, Are there many of them?" Kai asked.Sakura nodded.  "Many.  Whispering Woods… full of dangers.  But also… full of magic.""Magic?" Kai asked, his interest piqued."Yes," Sakura said.  "Magic… everywhere.  Some good, some bad.  Sakura… she use magic."  She held out her hand, and a faint purple glow emanated from her palm.  "Astral magic."Kai stared at her hand, fascinated.  "You can… do that?"Sakura nodded shyly.  "Sakura… healer.  But… not very good yet.""You saved my life," Kai said.  "That seemed pretty good to me."Sakura giggled.  "Sakura… practice more."
As they walked, Sakura told Kai about Elcor, a small village nestled on the edge of the forest.  She spoke of Grams, the village elder, and of the other villagers.  She described the simple life they lived, a life in harmony with nature.  She didn't mention her family, and Kai sensed that it was a sensitive topic.
They reached the edge of the woods, and in the distance, Kai saw the warm glow of lights.  "Elcor," Sakura said, her voice filled with relief.
As they approached the village, Kai felt a sense of anticipation.  He didn't know what the future held, but for the first time in a long time, he felt a flicker of hope.  He was lost, he was amnesiac, but he wasn't alone.  He had Sakura, and perhaps, in this small village, he could find the answers he was searching for.
