Chapter 46:

A Dark Smog

Miasma

"Mother of Eyes." The words clung to the back of my mind, enticing me to find its meaning. In response, I spoke up despite knowing I would get nothing out of Fesha.

"Eyes?" It was all I could say. I looked at Mag, her facing showing her determination to get an answer as well.

Fesha clicked her tongue. "To seek what shan't be sought, to remember what is to stay forgotten... Thus is the downfall of man and its sins against creation. I, Fesha of Caelum, shall lay thy greed to rest."

Before Fesha even attacked, my body had been taken over, only this time with more malice. A fire of vengeance burned in my soul, but it was not my vengeance to enact. In that instance, Fesha had gotten in front of my body, her blade swinging upward toward my arm. My arm lifted itself, narrowly dodging the blow. My legs bent and jumped backwards, my hand unlatching my spear from my back. Fesha stood still for a moment, standing elegantly with her glaive withdrawn. She disappeared in an instant from my sight and a small gust grazed the back of my neck. My body automatically ducked, the glaive just swinging horizontally over my head. My hand reached for the sword in my spear and unsheathed it. From my low stance, my arm swung my sword. Fesha jumped back and landed softly as if gravity had no effect on her. A barrage of yellow came in, Fesha deflecting it each one in an elegant dance. Her form was like a stream over smooth rocks that nearly broke the water's tension. Each deflection flowed effortlessly into the next as her blade move circularly around her body at different axes. Suddenly, a bolt came hurling towards me as Fesha ricochet it in my direction. My legs moved just in time, lunging me to the side as a small explosion in the grass followed.

Mag stopped shooting and Fesha stood still once again, waiting in silence. "What a bother." Fesha muttered before tapping her glaive on her shoulder once again. The dragon lifted its head, eyes closed, taking a breath while making a sound that was similar to a guttural cough. The pale beast stretched its neck up, revealing large, but almost fully healed, lacerations where large chucks of scales were missing. Its flesh was carved and dark gray under its white scales, seemingly not its natural color. As its neck fully extended upward, it let out a loud roar and a thick black fog followed through its teeth. As the dark gas flew up, the sky oddly began to ripple and the gas disappeared into the waves. It was like the dragon was breathing through a veil. It closed its jaw swiftly, cutting off the black smog, then moved its head downward toward us. As its mouth open, Mag and my legs prepared to run. The dragon let its breath rip, though this time, it was that of a thin black haze rather than the thick smog we had just seen. It seemed harmless, but we knew that we could not be so certain. We continued running from its spreading breath. As we ran, Fesha entered my view. She struck, but my arm blocked with the shaft of my spear. For the second she stopped me, the dark haze grazed the back of my arm. I immediately lunged back and out of the haze.

In that time something strange had happened. I had suddenly forgotten where I was. The flowers at my feet, the sky above, and the new face in front of me. I had no recollection of my surroundings. Then Fesha closed in on me and her name and my situation had suddenly came back to me. My arm moved my sword to deflect her gracefully oncoming attacks. Her moves were calculated and free form, not allowing for a time to attack back. Suddenly, the man in control seemed to get the timing, and as a small opening appeared he lunged the spear forward from my shoulder with my hand. Fesha ducked circularly under my thrusting blade and kicked backward. As she did, she spun holding her glaive near the base. Her blade swung in a large arc and made a shallow cut in my thigh. I winced at the pain from my backseat, but my body simple moved back.

Suddenly, from the corner of my eye, a yellow light grew brighter. Mag was charging a shot straight at the dragons head. Fesha realized and rushed toward her. Knowing she would not have enough time, Mag pivoted her foot to aim at Fesha. The charged shot went off and Fesha deflected it into the bright sky. The bolt entered the blue and rippled as it disappeared. Fesha immediately swung down, leaving a shallow cut on Mag's arm. I noticed Fesha move her glaive to her shoulder again. My arm instinctively threw my spear to stopped her. Fesha swept my spear from the air, sending it flying, but my body had closed the distance in that time. My sword swung upward as I was low to the ground looking up at Fesha's towering figure. As my blade was about to touch the skin on her cheek, she simply moved her head to the side and kicked my body away. The kick was hard and impactful, unlike the graceful moves she had displayed prior. It was death with a mask of elegance and class.

My body tumbled into the grass. I took a long hard breath as I laid there. From where I was, Mag seemed tired and out of breath as well, meanwhile Fesha stayed emotionless as if nothing had happened. Then Fesha then made a confession, not for us, but for her looming guilt of something.

"Even from beyond the grave, thou hast manage to tear us apart." She spoke with care.

Mag, who I had seen previously given up, stood with a disdained look. "Enough, even from the start I had no hope that we would best thee, the king's loyal blade."

"I am loyal to that pig no longer." Fesha said with disdain.

"Thy vague speech angers me! Why must we fight when thee could tell us all we need?" Mag questioned her.

"The answer to that should be a burden only I alone shall carry." Fesha said.

"I can't take thy ramblings anymore. Siding with dragons, attacking us. Thou hast been driven mad, trying to kill her closest friend over denying us knowledge." Mag said with more anger.

With Mag's anger, the ground began to boil. The red flowers near Mag set ablaze and grew larger and larger as it encased her in a deep orange aura. Her eyes glowed in a furious flickering amber.

With no hesitation, Mag spoke words of divination."May thy name grant me strength, goddess of the azure, and mother of dragon slayers."
