Now! I’ve decided.I’m going on a journey to find the culprit—the one they call the Memory Eater.
But… there’s a tiny problem. We have no leads. No clue where to start. Nothing.
Looking at the town’s condition, it’s obvious. Most people here had their memories stolen. It’s like someone wiped their hearts clean with a wet cloth.
“Damn that Memory Eater...” I muttered. “Where the hell do I even begin?”
That’s when I heard a voice behind me.
“We should start searching from the next town.”
It was Mira.Yeah, I know—I wasn’t sure either. I mean, I’m not from this world, so half the time I don’t know what the hell’s going on.
Now, I know what you’re thinking—“Wow, why are you suddenly so fired up?”
Let me explain.
This Memory Eater? This thing that devours the memories of people like they’re candy?
I can’t stand it.
Because memories… they’re everything. They’re the only thing I had left when I was dying. The reason I kept going was because of the moments I captured, the stories I locked in photographs.Without memories, what are we even living for?
Yeah, yeah—I know what you’re thinking:
“Weren’t you just a sarcastic, don’t-care-about-anything guy?”
Well guess what? I’m emotional and cool. I contain multitudes.
And hey, just because I joke around doesn’t mean I don’t feel things.I’m human, okay?
…Wait. Am I still human? After everything, reincarnated in another world with a magical camera—I look human, so let’s just go with that.
Anyway—back to the story.
Mira said we should head to the next town.So I asked her:
“Mira… you know where the next town is, right?”
She paused.
“...No.”
…Excuse me, WHAT?
You just said we should go to the next town—and now you’re telling me you don’t even know where it is?Amazing. We’re back to square one.
BUT! Luckily, Mira pulled out an old map.
It showed five different paths:
One near a dense forest
One cutting through a desert
Two leading toward the sea
And a tiny one smack in the middle of a jungle
We were stumped—until I had a genius idea.
I took out my DSLR—my magical relic—and rotated the dial.
One icon looked like a map, so I selected it.And then—
“MAP MODE ACTIVATED.”
A voice echoed in my head. And before I knew it, I was in the map. Like… literally.
It was like a full VR world version of the map.Hyper-realistic terrain, glowing markers, even floating islands.I could walk through roads, scout locations, and zoom in on towns—like Google Earth if it was made by wizards.
No, I couldn’t teleport in real life…But in this 3D map world, I could investigate everything without setting foot outside.
Cool, right?Yeah, I know—I’m awesome.
Time-freezing camera? Check.Map-diving exploration mode? Check.I’m basically the cheat-code protagonist now.
I laughed to myself like a villain.
“Ha… ha… ha!”
Once I finished scouting, I exited the map and told Mira:
“I found a shortcut to the next town. We can get there in just two days.”
She stared at me.
“Yo, what?! You disappear, come back like a ghost, and then say you found a shortcut? What are you, a ninja?”
I explained: just past this town, through the jungle, there’s a hidden trail that leads directly to the next village.
But Mira’s face changed.She looked… kinda pale.
“You… you do realize what you’re saying, right? That jungle is insanely dangerous. Even seasoned warriors avoid it. The monsters there aren’t just strong—they’re smart. And the forest itself? It shifts. It moves. It’s a living maze.”
Hearing that, I paused.
And then I said the most typical, stupidly brave protagonist thing ever:
“It’s fine. Maybe we’ll find some clues about the Memory Eater in there.”
She wasn’t convinced. At all.
But somehow—somehow—I managed to talk her into coming with me.
And so, the next day, we began our journey.
It took five hours of walking to reach the edge of the jungle.
I stepped forward, looked up at the massive trees…And said the only thing that came to mind:
“WHAT. THE. HELL.”
