Chapter 5:

Item Glitch

Brought into my Unfinished Game World

After Alpha finished his dinner, he rented a room upstairs. Once he layed in his bed he stared at Dave who just sat on the edge of the other bed. Alpha decided to break the silence:

— Do not tell me you are not able to sleep either, that would be really hard for me to fall asleep knowing I would be the only one getting some rest.

— Well, I don't feel any kind of exhaustion. But rest assured. I won't pull any pranks on you while you sleep, if that's what was worrying you.

— What are you going to do all night then?

— I don't know. I guess I'll roam around town and try to experience this "re-coding" ability of mine. There's a lot I need to learn to properly wield this power. I have to test out its limit to know what I can realistically achieve.

— You sure look more excited than what you let on.

— I mean... It is what makes me special. You do know I don't actually take this god complex seriously, right?

— You do not? he asked teasingly.

— Oh shut up! he replied before returning to a more serious tone. However, I do feel like I'm not totally useless. This power is unique and only me can use it. Even if it wasn't what I asked for when I reincarnated here, I'm still glad there is something that only I can do.

— I am glad you feel that way, but I cannot help but feel a tad bit jealous, you know? Because look, here I am as someone who can do everything in an average way. Nothing truly special about me.

— And that's where you're wrong. You don't realize it yet but you have the potential to create a truly unique combat style because you have access to all of the skills. It means you can do strategies that no one else can come up with. Such as being a stall machine!

— Would you care to elaborate on these terms? asked Alpha, perplexed but still curious.

— I mean you could focus your growth on how well you can take hits and at the same type cast negative status spells that deal damage over time, such as [poison]. And then wait until your opponent dies before he can land the finishing blow on you! Hell, you can even take some points in [restoration] skills or spells to make you even harder to kill! Ohhh... The strategies are now flowing through my head! I can't wait to experiment this on monsters!

— It seems so easy for you to imagine all of that. I envy your creative mind, really.

— Well, it's something that could also be trained. The right mindset is to always try to look for how some ideas can link up together. No matter how strange it could be at first glance! That's how I come up with a lot of cool ideas!

— I see. Maybe I will try to adopt this mentality in the future. You will tell me if the ideas I come up with are worthy of attention.

— Sure, why not?

Dave looked at the clock which was hanging on the wall and told Alpha to get some rest. He agreed to it and turned off the lights. Meanwhile Dave did exactly what he told Alpha. He experimented all night without feeling the need to lay down and relax. He was actually too excited to even think of taking a break from his experiments.

Morning came, and Dave went back to the room. Birds chirped, roosters sang, people started to open their shops. A fresh breeze went through the window and the first lights of the day shone directly on Alpha's pixelated face. It woke him up as the dots that he used as eyes started to expand. The first thing he saw was Dave who was floating right outside of the window. Alpha rubbed his eyes with his hands to make sure he was not hallucinating. And when he realized Dave was indeed levitating, he jumped out of the bed while withholding a cream of surprise.

— Why the hell can you fly like it is not a big deal?

— I mean, I'm basically a god, not being able to float around would be more surprising, he said teasingly.

— You sure came up with new tricks up your sleeves while I was asleep, huh? What else did you learn? Erasing people from existence?

— What? No... Of course not! It would've been really helpful, though. You overestimate my abilities, I discovered that there are actually way too many limits to this power. But I still was able to think about some things I can help you with during our journey.

— Oh, that is good news. And also kind of reassuring to tell you the truth, said Alpha with a tense smile.

After getting prepared, the two of them left the tavern to look for whatever they would need for their trip. However, Alpha did not have that much money on him in the first place. And as he thought their expenses would be cut short, Dave revealed one of the new tricks he learned. He asked Alpha to only buy a bag of dried meat to which he complied. Then Dave opened a multitude of food's data panel and started pulling out lines of code and attributing them to the pieces of dried meat Alpha just bought.

— And here you go! Just like that you just purchased the most valuable bag of dried meat in the whole world! proudly announced Dave. Each piece of meat is now as filling and nutritive as a whole banquet! Just one bite would be enough to sustain you for the entire day.

Alpha could not help but feel impressed by this feat. It had not even been a day since Dave got reincarnated with this ability and he was already making the most of it.

Next was equipment. The shops were quite empty as not many adventurers were in town. The Dawn village is usually just a quick stop for adventurers and most of them do not stay for long. However, because Dave wanted this town to be the first experience of shops for new players, he made sure these still had a large range of choices. To the point where there were intermediate level pieces of equipment available this early in the game. And because there were almost no other clients, the shopkeepers were more lenient towards Alpha as they accepted his requests to see the nicer shelves.

— So tell me your plan, Dave. Am I even buying something here? Or do you-?

— Oh, you already know me so well, Dave said with a malicious grin. Might as well keep the few coins we have for ourselves. We're just window shopping this time.

— What do you mean by that?

— Just stay close to me. I will grant you free enchantments for whatever piece of junk you're already carrying on you!Soon enough, Dave executed his devious plan. Once again, he opened multiple objects' panels. But this time he took a bit more time to pick up the item's attributes and relocated them into Alpha's gear.

— The thing is, when I developed the game, I made sure to put a limit on how many enchantments an item can possess on purpose. You see, as a game developer, my goal is to maximize the enjoyment of the players. And sometimes it means that I need to put limits and balance the game. When everything is easy, one cannot fully enjoy himself.

—But I thought your life was never easy, how did you come up with this conclusion?

— I modified a game I was playing back then to get infinitely stronger than what you were supposed to be in the said game. First few hours felt like I was a god-

—Here you go again with your god complex again, interrupted Alpha.

— But then I got bored real quick, continued Dave. Everything became bland. There was no glory in achieving anything because it was this easy. I don't know if you understand what I'm trying to say...

— I have no idea, sorry. This kind of feeling feels so... out there. I am not able to relate at all.

— Oh well, I guess this concept is actually hard to grasp for someone who just came into existence.

Dave then resumed his shoplifting window shopping with Alpha.
