Chapter 40:
The Flames Chosen Eternals
“Later, old man.” Mei departed with Arvad who left with a simple nod.
Jun looked to the White Flame whom accompanied him and Solara—Tarron Emberthane. By the older man’s side was Christopher who waved when he noticed Jun’s gaze.
“Guess it will be the four of us at base camp. Good. I’ve been wondering how you’ve been doing.” Christopher smiled. Jun shrugged, letting a simple smile grace his features. Amalie had no trouble getting him on the field trip. Tarron had made him a disciple, and so it was natural for the young merchant to join. Tarron tapped Christopher’s shoulder and then indicated to the tents. Christopher smiled before bowing and leaving. Not a word was said between the two. Jun watched, curious. The White Flame never spoke, always opting to tap and point. Even Amalie had been the one to introduce him and give them their mission—gathering supplies and exploring the smaller islands. Jun wondered if Tarron was a man of few words.
He stiffened as Tarron approached—procuring a small slate and a piece of chalk from a pouch at his hip. The older man’s gaze lingered then he looked at the slate and wrote a few words. He handed it to Jun.
Make Lunch.
Jun blinked and then slowly nodded. Was he not a talker? Tarron erased and wrote something else to Solara.
“It’s going well.”
Was he asking about their training? Jun felt a shiver run up his spine and saw the intent stare from the White Flame.
“…How many will be eating?” he asked. The White Flame held up four fingers and Jun nodded. He left, unwilling to learn how much patience the man had.
He found the kitchen set up on the side. Christopher was working on more sleeping quarters. Jun gathered the firewood and then looked for something to light the fire. There wasn’t anything useful. He bit his tongue as he went to Solara and asked her to light it. Tarron was the one who did it, without leaving his spot. Jun hurried back after muttering a thanks. While the pans warmed, Jun prepared a few dry fish and found some vegetables to garnish with. The meal was simple, but should be fine while they waited.
When lunch came, Tarron wrote something down, having devoured the food.
Delicious.
Then he erased and wrote again.
How is your training?
Jun paused, pondering how to answer. Tarron waited.
“I do hope that they bring something good this time.” Christopher chimed in. Tarron sent him a glare but the man only shrugged. The dynamic between the two was… interesting.
“It’s been good. We’re making steady progress.” Jun answered. Only afterward, did he notice the slight red tips of Christopher’s ears as he averted his eyes. Tarron continued to write simple questions, asking if he could learn healing as Amalie had said. Jun didn’t know how to respond.
“He’s a quick learner. I’m confident he will surpass me in no time,” Solara answered. Jun whipped his head around, realizing she had come to sit beside him. Tarron smiled before writing another message.
Good. Time for Runes.
“Runes?” Jun voiced, head tilting.
“Why do you think we were invited?” Christopher chimed in, looking proud. Jun raised a brow. They came to keep the Jinshari off and because he had asked. Christopher waited and then sighed. “You really need to make more connections. Master Tarron is a rune expert.”
Jun’s eyes grew wide and he looked at the silent man.
Amalie suggested.
Jun nodded. Runes were one part of this world that was simple and straightforward. It itched his scientific mind, much more than the faith studies. With a grateful prayer, he started asking about these other lessons. It took a while, but line by line, he learned about Amalie’s instructions to Christopher and Tarron.
Dinner approached and Jun found himself working with the three to prepare for the group’s return.
Princess Anise appeared with Carl, followed by Justice. More of the disciples appeared. Jun watched for Mei, but she and Arvad were not showing. His brow furrowed more and more as the sunset came, and then went. The darkened sky wouldn’t be a problem for her, but Arvad would struggle.
As the cleanup began, a sound rang out. Mei had been spotted with Arvad. Pounding feet came for them. Hasty words were exchanged. Jun’s face darkened. Mei was being carried by Arvad, and both were injured.
