Chapter 33:
Incomprehensible Simplicity
I head out into the halls walking to the cafeteria. The halls were so overly ornate, it really bothers me. Using that funding for anything else would have been a better idea. I walk past a cross section and catch one applicant swinging a weapon at another like a maniac overcome by madness.
Was that my imagination? I turn back around the corner and notice it is in fact actually happening.
“What are you two doing!?” I yell at the two applicants. That is when I notice that the two applicants are the most annoying new ones this year. “Yamakuma.” I say looking at the young girl. “Goodswell.” I say glaring at the pretentious boy. “You two follow me now.” I order grabbing the boy’s sword off the ground. “I’m confiscating this.” I add.
“You can’t! That weapon is worth-” The boy begins to yell.
“Boy.” I respond with a glare. The upstart freezes in fear at my gaze. Of course he has, I can cause a raging bull to freeze up with it. “Guild master’s office, now.” I order the pair of troublemakers.
-- -- --
The office is very large yet oddly empty. Strange, I always thought troglodytes were about showing off their wealth. I set Goodswell’s sheathed sword on the guild master’s desk.
“Apologizes for the disturbance sir.” I say giving my superior a salute. “Two applicants were fighting in the halls.” I explain. In response, he raises a clawed hand.
“This is more interesting than paperwork.” The guild master says with a throaty chuckle. “Care to explain what you saw master Til before I send them in?” He inquires as I put my hands behind my back.
“Yes sir.” I respond. I clear my throat before explaining “I was simply walking in the halls towards the cafeteria. As I passed by the founders’ statue I thought I saw an applicant attacking another.” The troglodyte lowers his gaze to the sword on his desk. “I had to do a double take because I thought I was hallucinating.” I continue “But it in fact did happen.”
“So who are the applicants?” The guild master asks grabbing hold of the weapon.
“Goodswell and Yamakuma.” I respond. “I knew those two were gonna be problematic.” I mutter in annoyance. He draws the sword from its sheath and whistles at the quality of the blade. Huh, no idea troglodytes had lips.
“That arrogant noble and that girl with affinities for all the elements?” He asks while sheathing the blade once more.
“I thought the arrogance would’ve been beaten out of the boy by now. But yes guild master, those are the two of them.” I answer.
“Bring them in please master Til.” He gently orders me. I nod and step out of the room.
“The guild master will see you now.” I say to the two applicants. Lydia hops up to her feet with a nod while William stands up with a huff. This boy is more trouble than he is worth.
“Hello applicants.” The guild master’s voice greets the two as I step back into the office and close the door. “Have a seat.” He adds putting an arm out towards two chairs in front of his desk. The two children sit without a word. “Now, I would like to hear from you what happened.” He explains stoically. “You may begin Goodswell.” The guild master finishes putting his hands together atop his desk.
“I had been doing extra training and felt hungry. So I went to the cafeteria.” William begins without even a pause before the guild master finished. “I proceeded to get in line.” He continues before pointing a thumb at Lydia in an accusatory manner. “Which is when this little no one grabbed me out of line.” He drones on while I step to the side of the guild master’s desk. This boy is insufferable despite his dedication and skill. “So in defense of my honor I drew my blade and we fought.” He finishes. The guild master’s eyes lay on Lydia for a moment before flicking back to William.
“And that is all?” Xentel asks the boy.
“Yes.” William annoyingly answers still full of pride.
“Now young Yamakuma.” The guild master speaks while turning his gaze to the young girl. “Please tell us what happened.” He finishes. The girl nods and clears her throat.
“I was going to the cafeteria to get food, as we all do.” Lydia begins rather emotionless. “I got into line. Not long after Goodswell came walking in.” The girl continues with a sigh letting some exacerbation leave her body. I cannot stand this boy as an adult I cannot imagine how much worse he is if I was also dealing with growing up still. “I noticed he still had his sword on his hip, which is very clearly a violation of the rules.” She continues “He then proceeded to cut in line. So I pulled him back out of line and he then started to attack me. Thankfully I dodged each strike but still...” She clears her throat again before finishing “That is, until he jabbed his blade against a statue.”
“That statue is of the founders of this guild.” Xentel explains. He begins to chuckle while continuing “Not even a giant could break through titannium that thick.” The guild master clears his throat before speaking once again “For the first punishment. I will be confiscating this sword until further notice.” Goodswell gasps in anger. “And applicant Goodswell, you will be on cafeteria cleaning duty for one month.” The guild master continues.
“Me doing servant’s work!?” The boy exclaims in shock as though he has entered some farce.
“Correct.” The guild master calmly responds. “As for you applicant Yamakuma.” He says turning his cold reptilian gaze to the girl. Now that I think about it, she has not seemed to be phased by anything that has been said or done this entire time. “Thank you for doing us a service.” The guild master finishes putting out a hand for the young applicant to shake.
