Chapter 26:
Tale Of Tails: A Girl From Earth
As Lysar and Evander charged toward each other, the battlefield around them once again erupted with shouts and the clash of metal. The soldiers of the dog and cat kingdoms, who had previously held back at their kings’ commands, now released their aggression. Cat soldiers leapt across walls and rooftops, tails and paws sparking amid the flames of battle, while the dog soldiers thundered forward, teeth and paws ringing against the strikes of swords.
Evander aimed his sword at Lysar. His canine ears were pricked, swiveling at every movement, tail slightly raised like an extra antenna for sensing danger, subtly flicking with tension. Every muscle in his body coiled, eyes searching for each opening, each shift in Lysar’s stance. His heart trembled—every moment carried a new threat, and he could feel the vibrations of battle in the tip of his tail, the tense flex of his ears, the ache in his wounded shoulder.
Lysar felt the energy spreading around them—not just their own power, but the chaos of battle, enemies and allies alike, all brimming with agitated energy. His feline ears twitched sharply, tail lifted and swaying with the rhythm of mounting tension, whiskers quivering. His claws scraped slightly on the stone as he shifted weight, ready to strike at the first sign of weakness. “No matter what… Harmony belongs to us, to the Cat Kingdom!” he shouted, his tail lashing violently, and his strike sent a wave of force shaking the ground beneath them both.
Harmony pressed close at the sight of Evander, ears flicking nervously, tail brushing against his leg for reassurance, yet she instinctively felt her presence resonate with the energy around her. Her body shivered slightly, tail spinning and curling instinctively as if reacting to the overwhelming flow of energy. She let out a soft, almost surprised chirp, a whisper of alarm and awe that mirrored the storm around them.
The soldiers of both kingdoms began to realize that this battle had grown beyond mere war—personal conflicts and emotions were now shaping the fate of everyone. Every strike, every leap, every flick of a tail carried weight far beyond simple military might.
Harmony stepped forward, heart pounding, ears alert, tail tense like a drawn string, yet determination radiated from her. The tension of the battlefield—clashing metal, soldiers’ cries, the smell of smoke and sweat—still filled the air, but in her chest there was a stronger force: she would not allow Evander and Lysar to destroy each other.
“Enough!” Her voice cut through the air like lightning. Despite the trembling in her stomach, her tone was full of power and resolve.
Evander, still wounded, paused for a moment, ears flattening slightly in reflexive fear, tail flicking anxiously. Pain still radiated through his side, but the sight of Harmony steadied him. Lysar halted his strike, his ears pinning back in surprise, tail stiffening with shock. His eyes betrayed confusion, the slightest falter in his balance.
Harmony stepped straight between them, tail spiraling gently around her legs, ears flicking softly, sensing each breath, each flexing muscle. She raised her hands, unsure whether she would have to use her power, yet her heart told her it was enough that she was present.
“You must not fight!” she said, voice trembling yet overflowing with the strength of an inner aura she had not fully discovered. “If either of you falls… if either of you wins, suffering will engulf everything! Do not let this pain hurt me more than it already has!”
Evander trembled for a moment, ears pricked and tail bristling, the scent of blood and adrenaline still heavy in the air, but his hand softened slightly under her gaze. Lysar clenched his jaw, muscles tense, tail flicking in short, sharp motions—but Harmony felt the flickers of confusion and frustration beneath his ferocity, subtly easing the tension.
Harmony stepped even closer, ears pricked forward, tail curling gently around her hip, eyes blazing with determination. “I will not allow you to destroy each other in front of me,” she added, as if the sound of her voice gave her a strength she had never known.
For a moment, time seemed to hold its breath—two powers, ready to erupt, were suddenly restrained by the presence of something unafraid to step between fire and danger, something willing to lay her heart on the line for the sake of others.
Harmony stood between them, heart racing, gaze firmly fixed on both. Evander, still wounded, slowly moved toward her, each step heavy with pain, ears shifting constantly to detect any movement from Lysar, tail rising and falling as if balancing his focus and readiness.
His father, the dog king, stood slightly apart, eyes cutting through his son’s resolve like a sharp wind. “Evander! Step back! You do not belong to her!”
Evander paused for a heartbeat, ears flat against his head in frustration, tail flicking in agitation, meeting his father’s gaze, but did not falter. His hand brushed gently against Harmony, and in that touch was a power he felt only with her. “No… I cannot step back. Here, where she is, my heart belongs,” he said calmly, every word infused with courage and resolve.
The dog king tensed, twisting in worry and anger. “For the sake of your kingdom, Evander, step aside! I will not let your heart blind you to duty!”
Evander glanced at Harmony, then at his father, and in his eyes shone unshakable truth: “No. Neither kingdom, nor duty, nor fear can turn me away. Even if my body is wounded, even if the world presses down on me, here, where she is, I am whole.” His ears swiveled, tail tense but flowing with purpose, muscles coiled, ready to react if needed.
Harmony felt a wave of power and courage radiate from him. His touch was warm and simple, yet it swept away all the tension of the battlefield. Lysar’s ears twitched, tail swishing sharply; he saw the quiet, steady determination in Evander and felt the pull of Harmony’s presence between them. For the first time, he hesitated—not from weakness, but from recognition that the force she carried was stronger than mere aggression.
Harmony looked at Evander, his eyes full of pain and determination, and something inside her clicked. Enough of watching, enough of fighting around and for her. She drew a deep breath, heart pounding, tail flicking in rhythm with the beat of her own courage…
“I will end this once and for all!” she shouted, voice not merely a call, but carrying a power that even surprised herself. Soldiers, kings, combatants—all froze. Her presence filled the air, energy radiating subtle yet relentless, ears and tails of all present sensing the shift in the battlefield.
Still standing between Evander and Lysar, hands slightly raised as if regulating the space around her, small waves of light shimmered around her hands, hair, ears, and tail. Anyone who looked at her felt an extraordinary calm, an aura of safety. Lysar’s tail twitched, ears flicked with both tension and curiosity, and even Evander felt the warmth of courage building with each pulse of her energy.
The soldiers on the sidelines sensed the unusual shift—the conflict calmed. Even the dog and cat kings exchanged glances, then looked at Harmony. Her energy, strong and gentle at the same time, halted the fighting, reshaped the space around her, and sent a clear message: “I will end this. Enough fighting, enough wars.”
Harmony looked at Evander and gently said:
“No one else will suffer. I will not allow anyone to fight for me or against me. I will not allow anyone to fight at all. Though I am vulnerable, I know there is a way to find peace.”
At that moment, Lysar felt the tension cross a boundary—Harmony was no longer just an observer; she was an active force to be reckoned with. Evander stood beside her, his heart linking with hers, still wounded, yet filled with new strength drawn from love and trust. His ears flicked in awareness, tail coiling protectively, muscles ready to shield her if needed. Lysar, too, could not ignore the quiet authority she radiated, tail twitching with restless energy, ears swiveling in alert respect, acknowledging the undeniable presence of Harmony’s power.
