Chapter 49:
Miasma
I had a dream once again, only this time things were different. I would not say I was even having a dream, but rather watching someone else's dream. My eyes opened and I was sitting on a carpet with colorfully dyed patters of leaves and branches. I was surrounded by strange looking toys that were scattered across the floor. My tiny legs were crossed and I was playing some make believe game that involved flying monsters and people defending from below. When I looked up, the rest of the room was a blur, my only focus point being what is directly in front of me.
Footsteps to my far left began approaching me, their sound somewhat metallic. The clanking of metal got closer until what had been approaching was standing just above me. I looked up to see a man in fully bronze armor casting his shade on me. It was hard to make out any details, but from the looks of it, the armor looked a lot similar to Fesha's, albeit more decorated in trims of gold and silver, and with flowing, pure white cloths that was draped through the armor. As I looked upon his face, it was blurry, but I could tell he was somewhat old. His hair was long, gray, and frizzy. Atop his head was a crown of thick, gold and silver bands that twisted up into a triangle shape in the front. A strange looking red jewel was at the center of his crown. As I stared at him and he stared back, he reached down to pat my head.
Suddenly, the scene in front of me changed. I was still sitting on the floor with my legs crossed, but my legs were far bigger than before and the floor beneath me was dirty and stained. I tried to move my arms back to allow myself to get up, but they were chained behind me. I struggled to free myself, the chains crashing against themselves loudly. Then, the room lit up by a flame that circled around me. The flame was small and black, yet the light it shown was just enough to see beyond it. I was surrounded by people in long white cloaks with bronze trims, all their faces obscured. They stood around me, chanting strange things, the black flames steadily rising as they did so. Two figures stood out amongst the cloaked people. They stood in the far back. One was tall and boasted bronze armor with white, loose tunic underneath, and the other had a flowing white dress with frills. A sharp pain in my chest stopped me from looking at them any longer and I blacked out.
My vision returned one more time in a different scene. I was running through a grand hall of shiny marble and high arching ceilings with golden decorations. I was looking for something, though it would not be long before I found it. Something large and pale white was making its way toward me from the other end of the hall. I met face to face with the beast, yet felt no danger. I hopped upon its neck and it began moving swiftly through the halls. Loud sounds of roaring and crumbling stone came from behind me as the beast I road atop continued moving forward. The beast reached a crossroad in the halls and jumped high into the air. A beam of yellow flames exited the beasts mouth, melting the ground at the center of the crossroad. The pale beast dove downward as I held on tight to one of its horns, the opposing air nearly pushing me off. I found myself in an open chamber, and just ahead was a large circular hole that stared into a series of large stone layers that met at a dark focal point, all the way at the bottom. The beast flew down the hole, and the sounds of crumbling rocks followed. I turned back to see thousands of winged beasts, all different colors and shapes, yet way smaller than the one I had taken, following us downward. The stone edges of each layer crumbled as the wings of the beasts collided with them, but that did not stop their descent. My pale mount pierced the air downward as we closed in on a dark abyss. At the bottom of this stone spire, a dark fissure was open, its form shifting. Finally the pale beast and I entered the fissure and the thousands of others behind us. I watched as the stones of the crumbled layers fell into the fissure from inside and immediately vanish. The void seemed timeless, meaning I could not sense how much time pasted in it. The beasts soared through the void with their mouths wide open, almost like they were eating something, yet there was nothing here to eat. Suddenly all the beast behind me began roaring in agony, squirming in the darkness. The beast I sat atop realized that whatever it was facing was far too strong for it and turned itself back. As we approached the only crack of light in this abyss, it began to close. We made it out along with only hundreds of others, but the fissure had closed, leaving behind many more beasts. We flew straight up as my beast looked to be in pain. Suddenly, one of the other beasts flew into mine. Scales flew as they detached from the flesh and blood spewed everywhere. Another beast came from a different angle, then another, and another, until their barrage had knocked me off and I fell into an open stone structure of pillars and arches.
I laid on my back, unable to move, staring upward into the focal point of light above, and watching as the silhouettes of the beasts took chances to kill the gigantic pale one. The other beasts' sizes paled in comparison to the pure white one, yet there were far too many for it to be a fair fight. The pale beast stood its ground against the swarm, its bright yellow breath now turned to a pitch black, pushing them away as they flew higher and higher until the flare of light made it impossible to see their battle from my distance. As the sounds of their battle ensued, I could hear them crashing into the edges. I watched as the shade of large stones grew larger until they landed around me. I tried to move, but could not get up. The stones continued to pile up until I was completely buried, surrounded by infinite darkness.
