Chapter 35:
Tale Of Tails: A Girl From Earth
The full moon was approaching, the moment when Lysar would send Evander to the harsh Earth. The hall trembled with anticipation, a tension so thick it seemed almost tangible, pressing against the skin like a living thing. Lysar entered with the cat king Corvin and cat queen Elyra, their every movement graceful, almost floating, the soft swish of their tails echoing faintly across the polished stone floor. Their ears flicked constantly, sensing every heartbeat, every whisper of magic in the hall, attuned to the undercurrents of expectation that hung like a veil. On the opposite side, Evander stood with the dog king and queen, their ears twitching subtly in worry and pride. The few dog and cat people gathered around shifted nervously, unable to take their eyes off the moment poised on the edge of reality. Every breath felt like it carried the weight of the worlds themselves.
King Darius leaned forward slightly, his hands tightening at his sides. His ears tilted back in concern, a subtle but unmistakable sign of his unease. Queen Selene stepped closer, her ears lifting slightly, alert, reflecting the storm of emotions in her chest—pride, fear, hope, and love intertwined.
“Are you sure, Evander? You don’t know their world,” Darius said, his voice trembling slightly, a rare crack in his otherwise firm composure.
“Don’t worry, father. I’ll manage,” Evander replied, his courage shining through the quiver of his body. His dog ears twitched with determination, tail curling slightly as if echoing the heartbeat of his resolve.
His mother stepped closer and wrapped him in a warm embrace. “Take care of yourself, my son. Come back alive, both of you,” she whispered, her own tail brushing against his in a comforting gesture.
Lysar stepped forward, radiating calm energy, yet the aura around him shimmered with power. “I can’t go with you, Evander. The stone won’t allow both your and my energies to pass through. And I cannot give it to you—it is bound to me. You will have to find another way back. But I believe in you. During the full moon, you will be yourself for a fleeting moment, and only then will you be able to return. Harmony must find the book describing the ritual Aurora Pactum—The Dawn Pact.”
Evander absorbed every word, Lysar’s voice resonating deep within him, strengthening his resolve. Lysar took his shoulder and smiled gently. “Bring yourself and her back. If you are not here in two full moons, I will come for you. And then we will together find the book.”
Evander nodded firmly, ears raised with determination, tail lifting in acknowledgment. “Thank you, Lysar.”
Moments stretched as Evander prepared to step into another world. Lysar lifted the stone from his necklace, opening his palm. The gem glowed faintly at first, a cold blue-silver shimmer that pulsed softly. Then it began to expand into a luminous mist, wrapping around Evander in spiraling, flowing ribbons of light, like liquid moonlight streaming through space.
The hall seemed to hold its breath. The walls reflected the growing glow, scattering fragments of light like tiny galaxies. The air shimmered, vibrating with the stone’s power, and Evander’s ears twitched at every subtle hum of magic. His tail swayed gently, glowing softly in the blue-white radiance, almost as if it were drawing energy from the very floor beneath him.
His body became enveloped in a swirling cocoon of light, pulses echoing the rhythm of his heartbeat. Tiny sparks erupted from the mist, spinning upward and scattering like fragments of starlight, each one leaving faint, glowing trails behind them. The light formed delicate fractals that danced around him, shifting with every breath, every movement, as if the portal itself were alive and breathing.
Evander drew a deep, steadying breath, courage flooding through him, tempered with a quiver of fear. He closed his eyes, feeling the warmth of the light wrap around him like a gentle tide. “Harmony… I will find you. I’ll do everything to reach you,” he whispered, each word carrying the weight of a promise, echoing faintly in the hall.
The light intensified, spinning faster, currents of blue, silver, and soft gold intertwining in a fluid, mesmerizing dance. Waves of energy cascaded across the floor, tracing luminous patterns that flickered and pulsed in sync with the portal’s rhythm. Evander’s dog ears flickered involuntarily, catching each whisper of magic. His tail arched gracefully, responding to the invisible currents, a silent companion in this magical symphony.
He glanced once more at his parents and friends. His eyes gleamed with determination, the pulsing light capturing each memory, each heartbeat, each bond he was leaving behind. Darius’ ears flattened briefly with worry, Selene’s ears leaned forward, sensing both pride and concern radiating from him. Lysar’s gaze met Evander’s, a silent exchange of trust and hope passing between them.
With a final surge of concentration, Evander focused entirely on his courage. The portal’s light exploded into a radiant, cocooning blaze, enveloping him completely. Sparks flew like scattered stars, dancing around him in chaotic, beautiful patterns. His form blurred, then became translucent, finally vanishing entirely, leaving only the gentle pulsing of ears and tail for a fleeting moment before the blue-white mist absorbed him completely.
The hall fell into reverent silence, broken only by the soft trembling of the air and the whisper of residual light. Queen Selene, holding back tears, pressed close to Darius, their ears brushing together in a comforting gesture. “Don’t worry. Our son will manage. I know he will return.”
Lysar murmured softly: “Good luck, Evander…”
Darius looked to Lysar, ears flicking nervously. “I hope his journey is safe… and that he finds Harmony.”
Lysar nodded, enigmatic and full of compassion. “We must believe in him. Earth is perilous. Every moment there will teach him something. He will return stronger.”
Selene leaned close, whispering to Darius, her ears brushing his. “I believe in him… and in her.”
As the light faded, Evander arrived on Earth—but he was no longer human. His body had transformed into that of a Toller dog. His eyes retained human awareness, but his movements were canine—graceful, swift, instinctively attuned to the world. The scents of grass, rain, and trees filled his senses, yet his resolve remained intact.
In the distance, voices whispered—near and far, like wind weaving through leaves, signaling that he was not alone. His heart raced; he had to find Harmony and the book Aurora Pactum. Every cautious step forward sent ripples through the faint mist of portal light that lingered around him.
Far away, Harmony felt a subtle vibration, a soft pull on her soul—as if someone were calling her, warning her that this was only the beginning of their shared journey. Her heart raced, each pulse both painful and sweet, full of hope and fear, like something she could barely imagine yet knew in her bones. Though her mind whispered that it might be imagination, her heart insisted it was real, and the warmth in her chest confirmed it.
