Chapter 39:

The Moment Between Worlds

Tale Of Tails: A Girl From Earth

One late afternoon, after long, exhausting hours at school, Harmony finally returned home. Her steps were heavy with fatigue, and she longed to change into something comfortable, shedding the constrictions of her school uniform. The dog followed her obediently, as always – a silent, unwavering shadow that never left her side, a constant presence she had grown used to without quite understanding why.

As she slipped out of her shirt, she cast a quick glance at him and nearly choked on laughter. There he was, sitting by the bed, the very picture of solemnity… yet somehow absurd, turning his head away, lifting one paw to cover his eyes as if shy or embarrassed.

“What?!” she burst out, laughter spilling from her lips uncontrollably. “Did you really just cover your eyes?!”

She couldn’t help but notice the little peek of him through the paw, his tail wagging uncertainly behind him, a tiny, awkward glimpse that reminded her of a nervous, fumbling boy.

“Oh my god,” she exclaimed, pressing a hand to her forehead. “You are not a normal dog. There is absolutely nothing normal about you.”

The dog lowered his paw, meeting her gaze with eyes that shone like golden sunlight, deep and impossibly knowing. Then he let out a soft, almost reverent whine, as if saying: I can’t help it… but I honor you.

Harmony sank onto the bed, still smiling, but her heart pounded in her chest.
“You know,” she whispered, “if you really were that prince from my dreams, this is exactly how you would react.”

The dog gave a single, short bark, crisp and deliberate. And in that moment, a profound silence enveloped the room, speaking louder than words ever could.

She moved to sit on the floor, surrounded by her scattered notes and textbooks, and the dog curled up beside her, resting his head gently on her knee. Those eyes – impossibly human, impossibly deep – followed her every movement, studying her as if he could see not just her body but her very soul.

She whispered to him, her voice trembling with a mixture of doubt and hope:
“You know… sometimes I think I’m imagining things.”

The dog lifted his head and licked her hand, soft and reassuring, before letting out a gentle, mournful howl – a sound so tender it seemed to echo her own unspoken emotions.

Harmony closed her eyes, letting herself feel.
“But… when I look at you, I feel exactly the same as I did back then. Those eyes, that sensation… my heart tells me it’s you. Yet my mind laughs and insists that you’re just a dog.”

The dog tilted his head, pressing his nose lightly against her palm, urging her to believe without words, to trust the invisible thread connecting them across worlds.

“What if I choose to believe in something that shouldn’t even exist?” she murmured, tears brimming.
“What if I’m just hiding from reality?”

Then the dog did something that stole the very air from her lungs. He lifted his paw and placed it carefully on her hand, mirroring the gesture Evander had once made in that distant, magical world.

Harmony’s eyes widened, her heart hammering in her chest.
“It can’t be a coincidence…” she whispered. She didn’t move her hand; the paw on her palm felt heavier with significance than anything she had ever known. Her pulse raced as though it could shatter her ribs.

“This… this is impossible,” she breathed, lips trembling.

The dog raised his gaze to meet hers, his expression almost painfully intent, as though he were reaching straight into the depths of her heart. Harmony felt her breath catch.
“…Evander?” she whispered, barely audible.

And then, as if responding to an unspoken command from the universe itself, the light around him began to shimmer, pulsing softly before bursting into gentle waves that revealed his half dog half human form. His dog ears twitched atop his head, soft and expressive, and his tail swished behind him, alive with emotion. His eyes were glimmering with longing, loyalty, and a fierce, unshakable love for Harmony.

Every movement of his ears and tail, every subtle shift in posture, radiated emotion – relief, fear, joy, yearning – woven into a tangible aura that vibrated with unspoken truth. He was simultaneously powerful and fragile, a creature caught between worlds, carrying in his presence the weight of lost days and dangerous trials.

“The full moon… has granted me just a moment,” he said, voice trembling with emotion. “A moment to hold you as a human.”

Tears sprang to Harmony’s eyes, but she didn’t hesitate. She wrapped her arms around him, pulling him close as though she could never release him again.

His hand moved to her face, gentle, precise. His ears twitched with each shiver she felt, the tail sweeping slowly, almost hesitantly, as if aware of the fragile beauty of this stolen moment.

“Don’t leave me… not ever. No matter your form, no matter the world, you are always you,” she whispered, heart breaking with both longing and relief.

“I’ve found you,” he murmured softly, a quiver in his voice. “Though I had to endure hell… I am here. And we have to find way back home.”

Tears streamed freely down Harmony’s cheeks, this time from overwhelming, indescribable joy. She placed her hand over his.
“I knew you weren’t just a dream…”

Evander kissed Harmony.

Then he began to speak, his human form slowly fading back into the familiar canine shape:
“We don’t have time… Harmony, you must find the book…”

“What book, Evander?” she asked, urgency threading her voice as the light dimmed around him. “Tell me...”

The light disappeared completely, and his human visage melted back into the loyal, familiar dog. Only that fleeting glimpse remained – proof that the impossible was real, that the reality between them was stronger than the worlds that sought to separate them.

The dog nestled beside her, resting his head gently in her lap. She leaned down, brushing her hand through his fur, whispering:
“Even like this… I love you.”

Harmony pressed him closer, firm and resolute:
“In the morning, we’ll go to the library. I’ll find the book, Evander… I promise we won’t be lost.”

He rested his head on her hand, his eyes shimmering with understanding, conveying a depth of devotion and recognition words could never capture. In that moment, Harmony felt an unbreakable connection, a certainty that nothing could tear them apart.

Though his body had returned to that of a dog, he lay beside her like a steadfast guardian, one who had survived every peril just to find her. His loyalty, his love, radiated from every twitch of his ears, the gentle sway of his tail, the unwavering depth in his eyes – a living testament that Evander had always been more than a dog or a human. He was the prince of her heart, and at last, she had found him.
