Chapter 53:

Twin Soul

The note of this mysterious person "L" only drew me closer to what Caelum truly was, but to Magdeline, she showed what seemed to be expressions of doubt. Maybe I should have been as speculative as her, but I had no background of this world to base that off of. The text I read was orderly and explained everything thoroughly. In short, they were not the ramblings of a mad man.

The following page spoke of the sealing monument that was labeled on the previous page. "L" remarks that as a theologian, he had theorized what this could mean when he first overheard it from some high ranking guards. In "L's" words, "From their conversing, they spoketh of a large 'sealing monument' at the base of Caelum that had an immense pressure about it. The word 'seal' has been used for centuries, but only in the context of protecting or trapping something immeasurable or unseen by humans. For these two guards to talketh of a large monument with an immense pressure, I knew it to be something I had recognized in my studies of civilizations long before us, but I could not be certain yet." "L" then remarked about how these two guards were taking a pulley that led down to one of the storage rooms for scribes of the royal archives. "Why would any guard needeth descent from this pulley?" "L" questioned rhetorically in the text.

The next entry seemed to have skipped ahead in time, talking about a completely different subject than before, but nonetheless, this new topic was also one of interest. It spoke of "L's" observations of the king's son. He had apparently been sent off at a young age by the king to explore the world, and "L's" next entry talked about his return. The son's return was supposedly grand but unexpected. "L" did not personally see his arrival, just heard of it through talks in the palace and he stated seeing the king's son a couple times in the throne room arguing with his father. "L" noted, "The young prince had supposedly arrived on the back of a pale dragon, an act considered heresy in Caelum, a city of dragon slayers." "L" then mentions that one day, the son had disappeared: "I had realized the throne room had been cleansed of uproar for quite sometime, then I noticed the young prince was no where to be found only after a week of his reunion." "L" wrote.

The next set of text began discussing how the royal guards, whose routine had been mostly consistent, had suddenly shifted. "L" noted through observations that more guards had begun patrolling around and in the throne room since the prince's disappearance. Not only that, but more guards only stationed around the throne room when the king was no where in sight.

The next section suddenly jumped to a another strange conversation "L" overheard. Two guards were exiting the pulley of the same storage room as "L" was just around the corner. The guards spoke of a plague that had broken out amongst the slums at the Caelum depths. A plague that had villagers scratching there eyes out and their skin turning gray and rotting off. The guards spoke of this as if they just saw it, yet they came from a pulley that would not take them down there. "L" mentions how he knows guards were stationed at the depths as enforcement for the lower populace, but it was strange that guards were still exiting from this pulley specifically. It seems that "L" took the pulley down to the storage to investigate and he had found what the guards had been going down there for. He talks about a small engraving in wall behind a shelf. When he puts his ear to it, he can hear the sounds of chains moving and rope tightening, just like a pulley. It suddenly clicked in my mind that this was the secret elevator that I had seen on the map "L" had made.

I turned to the next page and without even skimming through it, and a specific phrase caught my eye almost immediately. I saw the words "twin soul." I quickly started reading, knowing that this may be the thing I needed to finally get answers for my current condition. From the text, "L" did not seem to know what the twin soul is, simply another thing he heard in passing. However, he was very certain he knew where to find. The routine change of the guards led "L" to think that the answers were in the throne room in yet another secret chamber that was unknown to most.

I closed the book and looked at Magdeline. "Lets go." I said quickly as I bolted down the stairs with "L's" notes still in hand. We walked back through the dim halls swiftly as we made our way back to the throne room.

"Does thou knowest something about the twin souls too?" Magdeline asked.

"Too?" I said confused.

"Something about it seems familiar, but alas, it is yet a memory for I to regain." She responded.

Finally, we had made it back to the throne room, the giant ball of light fading in as we entered. We started by looking around the outer walls of the throne room, examining every inch to find something. Then we moved on to the inner pillars, our sights looking for an engraving that looked out of place from the already engraved characters. Magdeline and I made it to the last pillar, the pillar that the throne was embedded in. I stared at the throne's backrest behind the decrepit corpse of the king, but there was nothing of interest. That was when I saw it after so much time wasted looking. On the dulled bronze neck piece of the kings armor, I saw a mark engraved in it. Magdeline held another flower up near the corpse's face and the engraving glowed with flame. We heard rumbling at the far end of the room behind the throne. As we rounded the corner, we saw what "L" had speculated in his notes. The secrets of this supposed corrupt king were about to be exposed to us.
