Chapter 6:

Fang and Steel

How To Warm A Dying World

The distant clang of steel against stone echoed through the fortress as Akari floated behind Noel, her small flame quivering in nervous anticipation. The northern wind bit at the walls, carrying the stench of smoke and scorched earth. From their vantage point atop the ramparts, she could see a horde of corrupted ice-bodied golems pressing against the outer wall, roaring and slamming with relentless energy.

Seren stood at the forefront alone, his massive sword nearly as tall as himself, resting lightly against his shoulder. Barkley, the earth spirit wolf, crouched beside him, fur bristling, eyes scanning the horizon. Noel stiffened at the sight of Seren’s presence alone - it was even more overwhelming than before, a pressure that made him straighten instinctively.

The largest of the horde slammed against the wall, and Seren stepped forward, moving with terrifying speed despite holding the most giant sword Akari had ever seen. His lips moved in a steady chant, low and resonant, words carrying the weight of earth itself. At his call, Barkley’s eyes glowed a deep ochre, the ground beneath the ramparts trembling with power.

Stone to blade, earth to sunder - as one!

With a roar, Barkley surged forward, earth erupting beneath his paws as jagged stone spires impaled the monsters. Shockwaves rippled outward as he struck the ground, throwing enemies off balance. Armor of stone plates formed across the wolf's body, each movement grinding like shifting mountains. Seren followed, his sword cleaving arcs of destruction, each strike reinforced by Barkley’s earthbound might. The captain and spirit fought as one, their rhythm seamless: Barkley driving enemies into Seren’s path or tearing them with stone-clad fangs, the captain striking them down with unstoppable force. It was less a battle and more of a demonstration, a terrifying harmony of man and spirit.

Fang and steel, strike as one!” Seren cried in the thick of the clash, his voice cutting through the chaos.

Akari’s flame danced beside Noel as she watched, awe-struck. “That chant… it’s so cool! Can we do that too?”

“We’ll address that later. When humans use magic, it’s what they’re supposed to do.” Noel replied quickly, eyes fixed on the display.

When the final golem collapsed in pieces, the ramparts erupted with cheers. Soldiers and townsfolk shouted Seren’s name, their voices carrying pride and relief. Children peered from doorways below, eyes sparkling like they were admiring a superhero. Seren raised his sword, acknowledging them with a grin that radiated confidence. To Akari, it felt like he was a perfect leader - someone who always knew what to do, someone who could never be shaken.

The cheers rolled on, echoing across the cold stone. Some soldiers banged their weapons against shields, rhythmically chanting Seren’s name. Akari found herself almost swept up in it, her flame flickering brightly with admiration. The captain of the knights wasn’t just powerful - he inspired hope. She realized how fragile that hope must be if everyone clung so tightly to it. Her mind whispered doubts: if Seren fell, what then? But she quickly pushed them aside, not wanting to believe someone like him could ever break.

Seren lowered his blade and turned, his gaze gentle. “Burn the bodies,” he called to Akari. “Nothing of value remains on them, and we won’t risk corruption spreading.”

She obeyed, fire consuming the ice husks until only steam and scorched fragments remained. The warmth of her flames lingered in the cold air, the hiss of melting ice echoing faintly. As she worked, Akari’s thoughts drifted to the moment she and Noel had fought together. Noel hadn’t spoken chants. They hadn’t needed them at all. Their bond had simply… worked. She tucked the thought away, unsure if she dared to ask aloud why that was.

When the smoke faded, Akari glanced down at her form and felt the sharp sting of realization. She wasn’t human anymore. Not a girl from Earth. She was a spirit, a flame of another world. The cheering crowd reminded her of what was expected of her - usefulness. To burn, to fight, and to protect. The weight of that truth pressed into her like frost creeping under skin.

Mira appeared soon after, her black hair tied back and her clothes dusted with soot. She strode straight toward Seren, her voice brisk but respectful. “Repairs will need stone from the quarry. That leaves us with half of this month's reserve. A quarter of the masons will work on the wall while the rest will check for internal structures that may require resources.”

“Then I’ll ask the council to dip into stone from the southern stores after today,” Seren replied, already moving to inspect the breaches. “And I think we will have to ration the remaining tar.”

The two of them spoke like clockwork, gears meshing in perfect synchrony. Akari hovered closer, listening. She noticed the way Mira’s sharp eyes flicked toward her, lingering longer than on Noel. The artisan introduced herself quickly, voice softer as she addressed them. “Mira. It has been a while, Lord Noel Velrath, and this little one must be Akari, right? A fascinating spirit.”

The noble shook his head. “Call me Noel, Mira. It is a long story.”

Akari felt heat bloom in her flames as Mira’s gaze lingered on her with clear interest. “Y-yes… I’m Akari.”

“Mm.” Mira smiled faintly, though it was hard to tell if it was curiosity or calculation. “We’ll have to speak more later. Spirits like you don’t just appear every day.”

It left Akari both nervous and oddly flattered. Mira didn’t look at her like a monster or outsider - more like an interesting specimen she wanted to study. For the first time since her arrival, Akari felt seen in a way that was both flattering and unsettling.

Finally, Seren turned to Noel with a grin. “Come here. This is where you can contribute starting now. Logistics, resource tracking, damage assessment. This will be your battlefield today.”

Noel obeyed. His sharp eyes began scanning ledgers and estimates as artisans rushed in at last, setting up scaffolds and tallying the damage. Mira worked alongside Seren, discussing numbers and resources. Noel was already being pulled into the North’s workings, his knowledge allowing him to slip naturally into place.

Akari hovered near, dimming slightly as mental exhaustion weighed on her. She thought of the monsters’ roar fading into the distance, of the cracks spidering across the wall, and of Seren’s chant still echoing in her ears. The cheers of the people had been loud, their hope pinned on Seren’s strength. But even with all that, the unease wouldn’t leave her chest.

She had survived another fight, but the truth pressed down hard: unlike Earth, this world offered no true safety. There were walls, captains, and chants of power, but every moment felt like borrowed time. And she - no longer human, no longer part of her old world - had to survive it. The fortress wasn’t just Noel’s home now. It was hers too, whether she liked it or not.

Beyond the walls, another roar answered the silence, promising that their trials had only just begun.
