Chapter 4:

The Day We Leaned

The First Last Day

The nights in his apartment were always cold, no matter how much he layered his blankets. But tonight, for once, he wasn’t alone.

She wasn’t planning to stay the night, not really - but the way they’d prepared, it felt like she might as well. Two blankets piled on the couch. Bowls of snacks within easy reach. A glow from the television casting soft light across the room, shadows dancing on the walls. They had built a list of movies to watch together, and it had already grown to over two hundred titles.

When he asked her why she hadn’t already watched them all during her long months in the hospital, she just smiled.

“I did watch a lot,” she admitted. “But the more I watched, the more I realized I hadn’t seen. And then I ran into you - literally. So I decided: these ones, I’ll save for us.”

He couldn’t help admiring her for that. She always had a way of setting little goals for herself - things to look forward to, things to live for. And somehow, she made him part of them.

That night was their first attempt at a binge session. No responsibilities tomorrow. Nothing waiting except time together.

They settled under their blankets on the small couch, close enough that their shoulders brushed. The lights were dimmed so low that the television screen was the brightest thing in the room, flooding them in its pale glow. A few production logos flickered across the screen. He recognized some, but most passed him by.

The movie was one of her picks - an animated romance, fairly recent.

“Are you sure you haven’t seen this one already?” he whispered. The quiet of the room made anything louder feel like an intrusion.

She tilted her head, smiling. “I have, actually.”

He reached instinctively for his phone. “Then let’s pick something else-”

Her hand caught his wrist, light but certain. “No. I want you to see it. You haven’t, right?”

He shook his head.

“Then we’ll watch it. It’s… important.”

So he put the phone aside and settled back, and the movie began.

The story unfolded slowly, introducing its characters with gentle pacing. The art was vibrant and tender. He found himself understanding why she loved it: the female lead was disabled, confined indoors much of the time, often in hospitals. Fragile, but slowly regaining strength. “Even so,” she whispered once during a quiet moment, “the doctors never let her go far.”

The comparison wasn’t lost on him. He prayed that someday she’d be free of all of it - that her strength would return fully, and she’d never have to see the inside of a hospital again.

And then, in the middle of a quiet scene, he felt it.

A weight against his side.

He froze, heart thundering, and turned his head slowly. Her head rested lightly on his shoulder, golden strands of hair brushing against his jaw. Her blanket shifted as her arm moved, sliding beneath his, her hand searching until it found his.

Her fingers intertwined with his, soft, deliberate.

He almost spoke - almost ruined it with some awkward whisper - but before he could, her voice slipped into the silence.

“I love you,” she said softly. “Let’s stay like this tonight.”

His throat tightened. He swallowed the words he wanted to say, and instead leaned down, pressing his cheek gently against her hair.

Their bodies pressed closer together, sharing warmth under the blankets, the movie fading into the background. The story on the screen didn’t matter anymore. All that mattered was the story they were beginning to write between themselves - quiet, fragile, and utterly irreplaceable.
