Chapter 25:
How the wicked witch became the hero's sidekick
I don't even know what we should look at first. There
are so many booths with games and stands where you can buy all kinds
of things. There are stalls everywhere with all kinds of food, which
spread their appetizing scent through the streets. I have to admit
that I don't know most of the dishes. Still, everything looks so
delicious that I wouldn't mind tasting everything.
As we walk down the streets, we stop abruptly as
performers in colorful costumes cross our path. They perform
acrobatic tricks and joke around.
"I have never seen something like this!" I say, curious, looking at the performances.
To be exact, I have never seen something really happy or beautiful in the gloomy town I come from. It's nice how carefree everyone seems. It allows me to forget my worries for a while.
"Wow. I didn't know that humans are so acrobatic!" Sisli says, curiously following the performance.
"Then just wait and see what else there is to see," Knox says, smiling.
"Look over here!" I shout as I see a booth with throwing cans.
"Win a bear" is written on a sign. We go nearer.
"Hello, young lady. Come nearer and try your luck! If you hit all fifteen cans, you win one of these adorable plush bears!" the man says.
I don't really need anything like that. When I look more closely, the teddy's eyes remind me of that little rabid dog that used to live around the corner from me and once even bit me in the leg as I walked by. That little bastard.
"Look, Lionel, at how Aria looks at the plush bear; doesn't it seem like Aria really wants it? Why don't you do her a favor and get it for her?" Caspian whispers to Lionel.
"Do you think so?" Lionel asks, thinking.
"Yes, I am sure!" Caspian says.
Then Lionel walks to the man and gives him some bronze coins.
"I want to try!" Lionel says resolute.
I didn't know that Lionel likes plush animals or playing games. Did he know that the cans were glued to the floor? Knocking them over with the ball would be difficult.
"Of course, young man. Good luck, but don't be disappointed if you don't..."
Before he could finish his sentence, Lionel swung and threw the ball forward with full force. The cans clatter to the ground.
Wow, he threw so hard that he still knocked over all the tampered cans.
"How... I mean, congratulations. Here's your prize, young man," the man said, visibly irritated.
Lionel took the bear, walked to me, and held out the plush bear to me.
"It looked like you wanted it...!" Lionel says with a slightly reddened face as he looks away.
Did I mean that? But the gesture is sweet, after all.
"Thank you!" I say hesitantly, taking the bear. The plush reminds me of that mutt next door. But nonetheless, it looks cute in some way.
Sisli looks at Knox with big eyes.
"Can you get me one too?" she asks, a little embarrassed.
"Of course!" Knox says, smiling.
"I will try too!" Knox says and puts a few coins on the table.
"Of course..." the man says, visibly unsettled, as he builds up the can tower in the middle.
He gives Knox a ball. Knox takes a swing and throws the ball at the cans with tremendous force. He knocks down the can tower in the middle, as well as the towers on the right and left edges. They clatter to the ground. All the bears hung up in the background fall onto the man. Slowly and fearfully the man gets up again.
"Grab... your... win..." says the man, stuttering.
Knox is truly a beast.
"You did it!" Sisli shouts and grabs one of the bears happily.
The teddy bear is slightly bigger than her, but she carries it around proudly.
"Exercise always makes me hungry. Let's get something to eat," Knox says, chilled.
"I am not that hungry, but I would take something sweet," I say, thinking.
"I like sweets. Let's go!" Sisli shouts.
"Ok. But we should take Caspian with us!" says Lionel and glances over to Caspian, who is sitting with a group of women and talking about our adventures as if he had done everything single-handedly.
Lionel walks over to Caspian. But before he is able to grab Caspian, the woman starts to ask Lionel about everything. He visibly looks overwhelmed.
"I will get them!" I say a little annoyed, and walk over to them.
"Sorry ladies, but I need them." I say.
"You have to go so soon?" says one of the stupidly innocent-looking women.
"Don't worry, we will see each..." Caspian starts to say.
But I grab both of them on their arms and pull them behind me to Sisli and Knox before Caspian can finish his sentence.
"You are really fun stoppers!" Caspian says, a little annoyed.
I don't mind him and look around. Then we walk down the street. Knox treats himself to a huge skewer of meat, which he devours in no time.
"Chocolate fruits!" Sisli shouts excitedly as she sees the stand's large sign.
I used to eat them when I visited the Christmas market in the neighboring town. Provided that I had enough money. They are really delicious.
"Let's go and get some," I say to Sisli, smiling. She jumps on my shoulder, and we walk together to the stand and buy some for us.
"They are really delicious!" I say, smiling.
"I never ate something that good!" says Sisli with a chocolate-covered mouth.
A moment ago, I thought that Lionel would stare at me as our eyes met, but I must have imagined things. We walk around, taste every kind of food, and have fun until it's dawn.
Bit by bit the people put on lights in the street. We walk to the big marketplace. In the middle is a big fire burning, and people play music.
Performers and people around us dance joyfully to the music. One performer takes my hand and makes me spin. The residents around us also respond and join in. It's strange but kind of fun.
Sisli and Knox have also been inspired to dance and are moving along to the music too. Caspian and Lionel are still standing at the edge.
"Why are you looking at her so grimly? Don't you like that she's dancing with someone?" Caspian asks Lionel teasingly.
"I don't know what you mean!" Lionel says.
"You're really slow sometimes! I'm going to dance with a pretty woman now!" Caspian says, staring at a blonde woman who is already dancing.
As I dance and switch partners in the dance, Lionel is grabbed by a corpulent woman who draws him into the dance. He moves stiffly and feels visibly uncomfortable. But the partner swapping caused us to dance together now. I've just danced with strangers, but dancing with Lionel makes me a little more nervous, but it doesn't slow me down. We've never looked at each other for as long as we did during this dance. It's strange but also fun. Lionel seems to have relaxed as well. He even starts to smile.
Now it's dark, and as the music slows down, we stop dancing. And step nervously a step away from each other. The marketplace is so full of people that we can't see the others.
"Let's go a bit away from the hustle and bustle. Standing around here is a bit difficult," I say to Lionel with a loud voice.
"Ok!" says Lionel loudly as well.
Next to the market is a stone bridge over a little river that flows through the city, aside from the hustle and bustle.
"Did you have fun? Well, I found today very exciting. And it seemed like you had some fun too," I say to Lionel, smiling.
"It's been a long time since I've been able to switch off... You are really a surprising woman!"
"What do you mean by that?" I ask, knowing that I am everything but normal in different aspects.
"You do not necessarily act in a comprehensible manner!"
"Do you think I am weird?"
"No! I didn't mean it in a bad way," he says nervously! If he knew who I am, he would definitely mean it in a bad way.
"Then I am relieved!"
"I am really glad that you are here!"
"I know. Without me the team would be lost!" I say jokingly.
"It is not only that," he says and grabs something like a bracelet with a golden jewel out of his pocket.
"I know that you..." Lionel tries to say, but then a firework starts. I look in the sky; everything is colorful.
"I have never seen something as beautiful as this!" I say and stare at the colorful, bright, and sparkling light.
Then I look at Lionel again. But there is another person who walks down the bridge. A woman with long, light rose-colored hair, bright blue eyes, and a bright garment. How?
Lionel turns around as he sees me stare behind him.
"Rosa?" says Lionel, surprised.
What is the priestess from the original plot doing here?
