Chapter 48:
Incomprehensible Simplicity
“Yamakuma Lydia!” Gota Metra’s voice exclaims while knocking on the door to my dorm.
I spring up to a sitting position in my bed unsure of what exactly is happening.
“What is going on?” Birta mutters in exhausted annoyance also suddenly being awoken by the loud dwarf. The ogre looks at me with almost completely closed eyes, her long hair looking like a combination of an afro, perm, and vines dangling over her face.
“Yamakuma Lydia! I know you’re in there!” Gota’s voice yells again. The knocking somehow getting even louder. Almost like she has started tapping with her metal staff.
I look over at the window, the sun is not even up. What the hell!?
“It’s not even dawn yet!” I yell at the door. “Go back to bed girl!” I continue not even realizing I called her girl.
The knocking stops.
“What did you just call me?” The voice retorts in anger.
A massive gust of wind flings our dorm’s door off the hinges and out the window on the opposite side of the small space.
“Holy hell!” I yell in terror.
“What was that!?” Birta springs up into a sitting position as well in utter shock.
The dwarf mage steps into our room. She taps the bottom of her staff against the carpeted floor.
“Yamakuma Lydia.” Gota says once more. What is it with her repeating my name over and over? More importantly, what about our door!? “I challenge you to a duel.” The mage announces pointing the tip of her staff at me.
Shouts begin to fill the building from all the excitement.
“What!?” Birta exclaims.
“Couldn’t this have waited!?” I inquire very annoyed, bordering on angry.

Nadia towers over Gota even more so now that she has the teen sitting on the ground in the hallway.
“What are you thinking?” Nadia berates the teen. “Aren’t you supposed to be smart?” She continues. “Don’t go flinging doors off their hinges and out windows.” The master continues. “Especially before dawn!” Nadia finishes with emphasis.
I rub my hands against my arms, shivering for warmth while looking out the broken window down at the ground.
“Of course it broke.” I mutter seeing our smashed door on the patch of dirt below.
“Sorry about all this.” Nadia’s voice says. I turn around to see her standing in the doorway. She looks rather worn out, more than just because it is barely dawn now. “We’ll get the window and door fixed as quickly as possible.” She continues before sighing. “No idea why she didn’t just wait until you were actually awake to bother you. Better yet, once she saw you out and about.” The master mutters rather crankily. Oh right, she gets very aggressive when she is tired.
“What are we supposed to do until then?” Birta inquires still very much trying to process what happened.
“Yamakuma.” Nadia says seemingly ignoring Birta’s question. The master turns her weary gaze upon me. “I am authorizing you the use of spells in this room to keep you two warm until we fix it.” She announces rather nonchalantly. She is not aware I already cast spells in here…
“Huh?” Birta responds still too tired to really understand.
“I won’t burn the building down.” I respond with a nod.
“Good to hear.” Nadia replies trudging out of the room. “And Gota!” She exclaims. “You’re coming with me.” The master explains.
“Yes ma’am.” Gota replies completely defeated.
-- -- --
“So what do we use for a door?” Birta asks looking at the empty space where the door used to be.
“Maybe I can summon a simple one?” I respond uncertainty tinting my voice.
“Have you ever done something like that before?” The teen inquires while looking at me.
“Sort of.” I answer. “I made that small tower back in my duel against Quanah.” I add.
“That was incredibly flimsy though, right?” My roommate retorts standing up from her bed.
I step towards the doorway and examine it. I installed a few doors back in high school working as a set builder so I know a little bit.
“I don’t have to make an entirely new door.” I reply before putting my hands on opposite sides of the door frame.
Focus on a door. Nothing complex, nothing fancy. Just a piece of wood large enough to give us privacy. I close my eyes to help me visualize the object better.
Everything goes silent for a moment before a bright light nearly blinds me even with my eyes closed.
“Well it’s a bit small.” Birta says looking at the piece of wood lying in the hall.
“I’m sorry. I probably need to make it bigger than the door frame.” I respond turning around to face the teen. I turn back around and close my eyes once more. “I’m gonna try again.” I state.
A larger piece of wood. Large enough so it does not simply fall over.
Everything falls silent once more and an even brighter flash nearly blinds me once more.
“There we go!” Birta exclaims.
I open my eyes to see a simple but large piece of wood leaning against the door frame to our room. I smile at my handiwork before turning around to look at the window.
“Not sure how to make glass.” I say as I glance at the broken window.
“Well at least we have some privacy.” The ogre responds while putting a hand on my shoulder. I turn my head to look at her to see her smiling at me.
“True.” I say returning a smile.
