Chapter 23:
God Games
The trombone threads start to glide effortlessly across the ripples from the drum major's stick, aligning themselves to form a straight line facing the creatures. Their trombones were on their shoulders with their mouths ready to press into them and protect what's behind.
“Ayuri, Shina. Enough reunion time.” Hiwo orders them around before seeing that Shina was already next to him.
Shina nods. “I'm sorry for leaving; I didn't want to make you worry.”
“You had a reason, I'm guessing,” Ayuri smiled.
Hiwo walks over to Toki, tapping his shoulder. “She killed eight. That's a pretty high number if I do say so myself.”
“I didn't tell Ayuri; I couldn't bring myself to do it if there isn't enough proof.” He looks down in a bit of guilt. He had to tell her soon.
Hiwo chuckles, “Let's keep her out of it then; I'm planning something. So trust me one final time.”
They faced towards the forest, and the trombone players were in front of them, waiting for a creature to strike first.
Especially their lust for devouring couldn't be surpassed anymore; the first creature that walked out instantly dashed towards the camp at full speed, the distance of two hundred metres turning into a quick twelve-second sprint.
“Get your headphones on,” Toki quickly reminds them all. They all reach into their school uniform pockets, putting them over their ears, blocking out any sort of sound that could pierce through.
The trombone players, once within range, extended their hands, causing a beam to fire out of the mouth of the trombone, lasting the length of their draws. Its pure golden yellow appearance gave it a majestic feeling.
Avoiding the beams was impossible for the creature, as the eight combined attacks of the players covered every direction possible to dodge, under its immense magical power and with its combined weakness of the core. The creature dissipated in an instant.
The remaining nine in the forest were studying the sacrifice of their first attempt; their gazes were calculating and thoughtful despite their destructive impulses.
Mio isn’t a person to be joked around with, even with her rather timid personality. Once she activates her power, it's like she becomes a powerhouse.
As the other creatures slowly start their journey towards the camp, having noted the range of the sentries' attacks, they slowly snoop around, making sure to be out of range.
They are cautious of someone who tracked us here; there are only nine left, and that's at least comforting.
That's when it finally caught up to him.
Shina took out nine in total, and now another was taken out by the sentries; that's a total of ten. If we deduce that from the thirty-two and get 13 somewhere still lurking
As he finished his train of thought, the sentries split themselves in half, four at the front and four at the back. At the camp, everyone meets the sudden rotation, staring into the opposite forest that they never went into.
Six more creatures appeared from behind, now trapping them between two sides, with a combined total of fifteen attackers at them, heavily outnumbering them.
That answers my analysis. Well, I figured that symphony couldn't take out thirteen by themselves; that, however, means we have to get rid of even more than that.
The creatures now all started to pounce towards the camp at the same time, overwhelming them.
“Shina, take this side.” Hiwo rushes over to the opposite forest, knowing that he could handle fewer of them.
The sentries made by Mio started to shoot out their beam; the less concentrated attack caused damage near the core, all around to the limbs, causing some of them to lose a leg or have a part of their beak cut off.
Since the increasing threat from within the tent, Mio taps her drum major stick twice secretly to avoid any suspicion from Kazu, her condition worsening as a result. The purple poison spread towards her upper back and caused more spots to appear around her body, luckily covered by her clothes.
In response, the sentries start dancing around the ripples on the ground, their movements anatomic and erratic, trying to take on each creature themselves as they split into individual formations.
Everyone notices how each creature is occupied by at least one sentry, leaving seven to head towards the main group.
Toki rushes over to the tent where Kazu and Mio reside, engaged in a talk. Kazu was still unable to fight, and Mio staying hidden was more beneficial, considering her summons didn't need her help.
“Mio, could you put a thread from my spear into my hand and also around my wound so I can go all out?”
Without replying, she taps her drum major stick, sending a new ripple out from its confines. It slowly causes a thread to emerge out of them, defying the locked doors, shooting into his spear while also giving him the end of it into his grasp, coiled around.
The other thread manifested as well, taking his wound around firmly, making it impossible to reopen or pose any issues.
I'm starting to want her power a bit. Is this me feeling envy, perhaps?
Ignoring his selfish thoughts, he rushes over to take Hiwo’s side.
“I can grab the spear from you at any time using this thread, so if I get an opening, don't be afraid to let go. My wound is also closed with another thread.”
Hiwo nodded before pointing the spear towards the creatures, starting to commence their attack. They had a total of two to deal with alone, considering four are occupied.
Shina's side has a total of five she has to take on; considering that she already killed eight, this was just more comedic than anything.
“Just don't get hit.” Ayuri gives her a small smile.
Shina glances to her side. “Didn't plan to anyway; just watch how I have grown over the last couple hours. Consuming those things gave me a big boost.”
Both sides were ready for their final confrontation. This was going to be a fight that would either force them to elimination or force them to become stronger than most within the games.
“Hiwo, let's do this!” They instigate their sprint towards the creatures.
