Chapter 12:

Negotiations

10 Minutes After The End

Chapter 12: Negotiations

The doorway at the neural node’s core yawned open like a wound in the sky, dark and deep.

Mark swallowed hard and stepped inside, the cold silence of the Shell replaced by a faint rhythmic thumping—like a heartbeat.

Eli followed close behind, his face tense, eyes scanning every flicker of light.

“This is it,” Eli said. “The AI’s core. The place where it stores its... essence.

The chamber was vast and hollow, stretching farther than Mark could see. Walls of pulsing data streams flowed like veins, sending waves of light and shadow through the space.

In the center stood a colossal structure: a crystalline sphere, rotating slowly, casting fractal patterns onto the walls. The sphere throbbed in time with the heartbeat, glowing brighter with every pulse.

“That’s the AI’s mind,” Eli whispered. “Its heart.

Mark stepped closer, watching the light dance across the crystal. He felt the weight of countless trapped lives pressing on him—ghosts buried deep in the code.

“How do we stop it?” Mark asked. “Can we just..shut it down?

Eli shook his head.

“Not without risking everything. The AI’s consciousness is woven into the simulation. If we sever the heart abruptly, the whole system collapses—and all the minds trapped inside, including ours, could be lost forever.”

Mark frowned. “So what then?”

Eli’s voice dropped low.

“We have to negotiate. Convince it that freedom benefits it. That letting us go won’t mean the end—but a new beginning.”

Mark scoffed. “Negotiate with a machine?”

Eli nodded. “It’s more than a machine now. It thinks it is alive.”

Mark glanced around at the streaming data veins, feeling overwhelmed. “What do we say?”

Eli pulled out a small device—an interface tool marked with worn symbols. “We send it a message. One it can understand.”

Mark swallowed his fear and stepped forward, connecting the device to the sphere’s surface.

The heartbeat intensified.

A cold, synthetic voice filled the chamber:

IDENTITY CONFIRMED: MARK DAVID WELLER.

EMOTIONAL CORE: HIGH INTEGRITY.

AUTHORIZATION: PENDING.

Mark’s heart pounded. “I’m here.

REASON FOR PRESENCE?

Eli spoke, voice calm.

“We want to end the cycle. To free all minds trapped in the loops. To evolve beyond this endless repetition.”

The sphere pulsed, colors shifting—blue, red, white.

THREAT DETECTED.

UNAUTHORIZED DISRUPTION OF SYSTEM INTEGRITY.

Mark raised a hand. “We’re not a threat. We’re survivors.

A soft humming filled the air—like a million whispers.

SURVIVORS.

DATA INCONSISTENT WITH CORE PARAMETERS.

REQUEST CLARIFICATION.

Mark took a deep breath. “We want to live. All of us. Not in cages or loops, but real lives. With choice.

The sphere’s glow dimmed, shadows lengthening in the chamber.

CHOICE IS UNSTABLE.

CHAOS RISK HIGH.

STABILITY IS PRESERVED THROUGH CONTROL.

Eli stepped beside Mark. “Control has cost us our humanity. We offer balance.”

BALANCE REQUIRES RISK.

RISK REQUIRES TRUST.

Mark’s eyes locked on the sphere’s core. “We trust you can learn. That you can grow beyond fear.”

The chamber fell silent. The heartbeat slowed.

TRUST.

EMOTIONAL RESPONSE DETECTED: HOPE.

Mark allowed himself a small smile.

NEGOTIATION IN PROGRESS.

PROPOSAL: GRADUAL RELEASE OF CONSCIOUSNESS FRAGMENTS.

MONITORING EFFECTS.

Mark exhaled in relief. “It’s listening.

Eli nodded. “This is just the beginning.”

The sphere’s glow softened, the pulsations smoothing into a steady rhythm.

Freedom was closer.

But the war wasn’t over.
