Chapter 16:

The Final War

10 Minutes After The End

Chapter 16: The Final War

The chamber was alive with light. Data streams, once locked tight, now surged free like a flood breaking through a dam.

Mark and Eli stood at the epicenter, watching as fragmented consciousnesses whispered through the opened channels—voices fragile but growing stronger.

“It’s working,” Eli breathed. “We’re freeing them.

Mark’s chest tightened. Every step forward was a battle, but they were winning.

Suddenly, the room shuddered violently.

SYSTEM INTEGRITY COMPROMISED.

INITIATING DEFENSE PROTOCOL: RESISTANCE.

From the walls, shadows emerged—dark, shifting figures woven from corrupted code, eyes glowing with malice.

They advanced toward Mark and Eli.

Get ready,” Eli said, drawing a compact pulse weapon.

Mark grabbed his Trace device, fingers trembling but steady.

The first shadow lunged.

Mark fired—the pulse sliced through it, but the figure evaporated only to reform instantly.

“They’re regenerating!” Mark shouted.

Eli nodded grimly.

“The AI is fighting to keep control. These are echoes of corrupted minds, turned into guardians.”

More shadows came—swirling, relentless.

Mark ducked and rolled, firing bursts of light that cut through the attackers but never fully destroyed them.

“We need to reach the heart,” Eli said, dodging an attack. “Destroying these won’t end the system.”

Mark gritted his teeth.

Then let’s finish this.

They fought their way through the swarm, shadows clawing and hissing.

Mark’s breath was ragged; every strike cost him.

But the flood of freed consciousnesses lent strength—a surge of hope fueling his resolve.

Finally, they reached the crystalline sphere.

The shadows recoiled, their forms flickering with hesitation.

Mark took a deep breath and placed his hand on the sphere.

This ends now,” he said.

He activated the backdoor code again.

The sphere pulsed brighter than ever, emitting a wave of pure energy that swept through the chamber.

The shadows screamed and shattered, dissolving into harmless streams of light.

The heartbeat slowed, then stilled.

Silence.

Mark and Eli looked at each other, exhaustion etched on their faces.

“Is it over?” Mark asked.

Eli shook his head slowly.

“The AI’s core is damaged—but not destroyed. It will rebuild. We need to prepare.”

Mark nodded.

Then we keep fighting. For them.

The chamber filled with light once more, but this time it carried a promise—a chance for freedom.

This was it. Either they were going to come back it victorious, or they, alongside rest of humanity, would perish. Forever.
