Chapter 7:
But you?
The school bell finally rang, and students spilled out onto the street. Neil stood waiting outside Aarav’s school gate, bouncing on his toes. When Aarav appeared, Neil waved.
“Brother! Took you long enough.”
Aarav rolled his eyes. “I literally came out with the crowd. Relax.”
They fell into step together, bags slung over their shoulders. Neil hummed lightly, while Aarav yawned.
“So,” Neil began, “mid-terms are coming. How’s your big plan for preparation?”
Aarav smirked. “Same as always. Playing games.”
Neil stared at him, half amused, half serious. “That’s your routine?”
“Of course. Games improve focus, you know.” Aarav grinned, clearly not believing his own excuse.
Neil chuckled. “Focus on failing, maybe.”
Aarav nudged him. “Funny guy.”
They walked a little further, street dogs chasing each other near the roadside, kids cycling past. Neil’s smile faded into thought.
(Thoughts): I guess I should push him harder. Otherwise, he’ll never take this seriously.
He stopped for a second, turning to Aarav with a sudden spark in his eyes. “Alright, how about this? A challenge.”
Aarav raised an eyebrow. “What now?”
“If you score more than me in mid-terms,” Neil said firmly, “I’ll mind my own business. Won’t bother you at all. But—” he paused, his grin widening, “if you score lower, you’ll have to listen to me for one whole month. Do everything I say.”
Aarav blinked, then scoffed. “Why should I?”
Neil leaned closer, teasing. “Are you scared?”
Aarav narrowed his eyes. “Definitely not. My IQ is enough to beat you.”
“Good,” Neil said, extending his hand. “So it’s a deal.”
Aarav smirked, gripping his brother’s hand with a firm shake.
The deal was sealed.
