Chapter 3:

Calm Before the Storm

Echoes Beneath Forgotten Stars Volume 2

The water rippled gently, reflecting the silver light of both moons, each wave shimmering like liquid glass under the serene night sky. Aiko sat on the soft, dew-kissed grass, the fabric of her simple yet elegant gown brushing against her legs and fluttering with the nocturnal breeze. The faint scent of moonflowers wafted through the air, sweet and calming, yet her heart raced with a mixture of anticipation and nervous excitement. Somewhere deep inside, a quiet flutter whispered like a secret she had yet to understand.

Akihiko sat beside her, close enough that the warmth of his presence was a steady anchor in the night. His gaze was fixed entirely on her, not the lake, as if every ripple of water, every reflected star, paled beside her presence. The moonlight touched his hair, highlighting the soft contours of his face, and for a heartbeat, the world seemed to hold its breath.

“Sometimes,” he began softly, his voice low and thoughtful, “I used to think my life was only duty. That I was born to protect my world, to one day take my father’s throne. But when you came… everything gained meaning. For the first time, I have a reason to live not just for others, but also for myself. And for you. For us.”

Aiko’s cheeks flushed a delicate pink, her gaze lowering to the soft grass beneath her. Her fingers nervously fidgeted with the star-shaped pendant resting against her chest, twisting it between them as if it could anchor her racing thoughts. “Akihiko… I… I’m afraid I won’t be strong enough. I don’t know if I can be the princess everyone expects. If I fail… I couldn’t bear to disappoint you.”

Akihiko gently turned toward her, resting his hands over hers. His touch was firm yet tender, each movement careful, deliberate, imbued with an unspoken promise. His deep blue eyes caught the moons’ reflection, glowing like twin pools of calm determination. “Aiko, you are enough. You are not a princess because of a title—but because of what you carry inside. And even if the whole world doubted, I never would.”

Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears, warmth pooling in her chest. His words were more than reassurance—they were a vow, wrapped in the quiet intimacy of the night, holding her in a cocoon of safety even before their bodies fully met. Slowly, almost instinctively, she leaned closer, and they shared a soft, fleeting kiss—a delicate brush of lips that spoke of trust, devotion, and unspoken longing.

Around them, their energies began to hum subtly, threads of warm red and cool blue weaving together like ribbons of light, swirling gently around their forms. The universe seemed to respond, the lake reflecting the pulse of their hearts and the delicate intertwining of their auras.

Aiko giggled softly, breaking the tender silence. “You always speak so seriously. Do you practice these speeches in front of a mirror?”

Akihiko chuckled, the sound deep and warm, making her heart skip. “Only when I know someone worth impressing is nearby,” he teased, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. His hand brushed hers gently, fingertips grazing, eliciting another small laugh from Aiko.

They rose together, hands intertwined, walking along the water’s edge. Each footstep harmonized with the gentle ripples of the lake, as if the universe itself exhaled with them, acknowledging their bond. Behind them, Mika and Naoru crept quietly, careful not to disturb the pair, though their amusement was clear in the soft, knowing smirks on their faces. Completely lost in one another, Aiko and Akihiko remained blissfully unaware.

“You know,” Aiko murmured, eyes tracing the mirrored reflection of their joined hands, “when I think about our wedding… I’m not so afraid of the duties, but of losing moments like these with you.”

Naoru’s voice broke the serene silence, gruff yet playful: “Oh, here we go again with one of those sweet lake-side talks. If you two get any more romantic, I’ll have to jump in the lake and redirect attention!”

Aiko and Akihiko didn’t pay any mind to Naoru. They only gave him a soft, fleeting smile, their eyes and hearts entirely focused on each other, as if the world around them had melted away. In that moment, they were in their own little universe. Naoru, standing nearby, could only shake his head with a faint, resigned smile, realizing he was witnessing something far beyond his reach—two souls completely entwined, blissfully unaware of anyone else. Mika let out a soft, amused sigh, eyes sparkling with quiet delight. “Give them a moment, Naoru. Even heroes need a little peace and sweetness before reality catches up.”

Akihiko’s lips curved into a gentle smile, a faint blush dusting his cheeks. He squeezed her hand again, reassuring, almost possessive in its tenderness. “You won’t lose them. Our wedding will not be just a single day, but a series of moments—every day for you and me. We will build memories together, even when the world demands our strength and duty.”

Aiko exhaled softly, leaning her head slightly toward him, feeling the warmth of his presence. “Sometimes I fear the future…”

“You will not be alone,” Akihiko said firmly, his aura of calm blue-and-white energy glowing softly around them, shimmering on the lake’s surface. “We are strong together. Nothing will be able to tear apart what we share.”

Feeling playful, Aiko nudged him gently with her shoulder. “And what if you get distracted by me? What if I’m too mischievous?”

Akihiko raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile forming. “Then I suppose I’ll just have to catch you… like this.” In one smooth motion, he twirled her around, and they laughed together as the soft grass blurred beneath them. Their lips met again in a spontaneous kiss, light and playful, a shared laugh escaping through their mouths as they broke apart, cheeks flushed and eyes sparkling.

Later, as they strolled back toward the palace, Akihiko glanced down the path where the moonlight pooled in silvery patches on the polished stones. “Aiko… stay close to me,” he said softly, drawing her nearer. He leaned down and placed a lingering, tender kiss on her forehead, his hands resting gently at her waist. “Every step we take… I want to be with you.”

When they reached her chamber, Aiko paused at the doorway, reluctant to break the moment. Akihiko pulled her gently into his arms and placed a tender goodnight kiss upon her lips. It was a fleeting moment meant only for the two of them—a moment they both wished they could hold onto forever. Akihiko’s hand brushed hers once more, their fingers intertwined, sending a subtle pulse of warmth through her chest. “Goodnight, Aiko,” he whispered. “Sleep well, my light.”

Aiko’s cheeks warmed as she met his gaze. “Goodnight… Akihiko.” She stepped inside, the door closing behind her, and leaned against it for a moment, feeling the residual warmth of his presence lingering like a gentle caress.

Alone in her chamber, she exhaled softly, settling onto her bed. The gentle moonlight filtered through the curtains, highlighting the soft shimmer of her gown and the faint glow of her pendant. She curled slightly, letting herself sink into the comfort of the moment. Then, with a soft, almost shy smile, she rose again, tiptoeing to the window. Akihiko’s silhouette appeared briefly in the courtyard below, and she pressed her hand to the glass, imagining his hand touching hers. A warmth bloomed in her chest, a reassurance that their bond—though separated—remained unbroken.

That night, as Aiko rested, the tranquility of her dreams shifted. The star-filled sky outside dimmed slightly, and one slowly blackened, fading until it was a stark void in the cosmos. A soft whisper rose from the darkness, cold yet strangely alluring, stirring both fear and curiosity in her chest. Her heart raced, and for a fleeting instant, her pendant glowed a chilling violet, contrasting sharply with its usual warm reddish-gold shimmer.

In the chamber on the other side of the palace, Akihiko awoke abruptly, energy prickling at his senses like a distant, sinister wind. He sat upright, alert, eyes scanning the horizon through the window. A flicker of unfamiliar light flashed across the skyline and vanished just as quickly.

“Whatever that was,” he murmured, voice low and tense, “it’s approaching.”

Outside, the wind carried a strange, faintly metallic scent, and the ripples in the distant lake seemed to tremble even from afar. Though separated by walls and doors, Aiko and Akihiko could still sense the subtle resonance of each other’s presence, their intertwined auras a quiet beacon against the gathering shadows.

Even Mika and Naoru, observing discreetly from the shadows, sensed the shift. Naoru muttered, half to himself, half in jest, “Yeah… that feeling. Something’s coming. And it isn’t good.”

Mika’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully, lips pressed into a thin line. “Let them rest. Let them feel safe for now. They’ll need every bit of that strength and trust when it arrives.”

Naoru added softly, a trace of worry glimmering in his eyes, »and the two of us as well.«

And so the night stretched on, the calm before the storm, the moons glinting red and blue on the rippling lake, reflecting the bond between two hearts destined to face whatever darkness approaches—each in their own chamber, yet connected by threads of energy, emotion, and love that no distance could sever.
