Chapter 19:
DEAD//END: In the End, the world shall bow to Death!
"The mechanisms of magical vision were discovered over 200 years after the War of the False Gods. What does that mean?" asked the young teacher to her students.
The room remained silent, with the occasional snore here and a yawn there.
With no response, the teacher puffed out her cheeks and closed her eyes with a childish expression:
"Come on, guys! It means that in all the great epics and tales about war, magic is used purely by empirical means! To perform magic, knowing how to train your eyes is the main factor. The great wizards created spells and forged seals only through trial and error, their magic invisible to the eye!"
Fuwaaah... I'm so sleepy. I don't know if it's just me, but does anyone understand a thing?
At the beginning of the day, I believed that running into a student in uniform was lucky, but the further we go into the day, the more I believe the opposite. It would have been better to get lost!
It was the fourth class of the day, alternating between a regular math class, military strategy, and two classes on the fundamentals of magic.
The teacher gave her class excitedly and energetically, her somewhat youthful and squeaky voice trembling with excitement, to the point that her glasses seemed to come alive, jumping off her face at certain moments.
Why didn't we stay home? Breakfast was so good, we could have eaten all day!
That's not how it works, Shi-nii. Satiety is a double-edged sword; it's horrible to be hungry, but it's not cool to be too full. Stomach p*** is the worst of all.
In order not to trigger me again, as a new writing protocol, the word pain and all its variants were officially censored.
Wait... I SAID THE WORD!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
If you don't get lost in the thousands of memories of pain and suffering you carry, I'll buy a cookie for us to try later.
Okay, it’s a deal, Tadashi.
I swear, all I need to do is throw a ball and you catch it, and you'll become my pet.
While I was talking in Tadashi's head, he continued to read a large book with a damaged cover. It looked like a tome or grimoire, but you only had to glance over the pages, full of images and graphics, to see that it was a standard school textbook.
Damn, someone had mistreated that book! It couldn't have been just neglect, it had to be intentional. Ignoring the class and the poor condition of his book, Tadashi read more about how magic worked.
Sometimes I would break his concentration by pretending to punch the other students in the classroom with my skeleton form. Tadashi would always get scared, forgetting that my physical form was just a hallucination.
You're really proud of messing with my head. You've already said about the hallucination about 500 times!
I know, but you always forget! It's your fault that I have to keep repeating it.
Suddenly, the class became interesting again:
"After we discovered the means of training the magical spectrum of vision, everything changed in our world. I have some research papers that are well advanced in alternative training methods for non-magical humans, but currently, the only ones who can see magic are us, the blue-blooded... I mean, humans with magic."
We were getting a hyper-exposure of important information! And yet, Tadashi preferred to continue reading his book. Remember all the character development, damn it! Where's the ‘I'm going to do things differently in this new life’ attitude?
Hey, I'm just excited about the new possibilities! Do you know how many stories there are in this textbook? A world full of new stories, just imagine!
I’ll go easy on you, since it’s our first day.
Thanks, Shi-nii. Luckily, the body combo already includes basic reading skills, like fries on the side. Can you imagine having to learn to read from scratch?
Eh? It wasn't the body that did that, silly. It was me!
What?
Du-uh, did you forget, I'm literally an entity that forms the basis for the physical world! I've seen all human languages from their inception, I can pretty much already know 80 percent of a language using the old ones as a reference. My only problem is slang! We just need some time to understand them.
"Wow, that’s so cool…" At the end of the sentence, Tadashi noticed he had spoken.
WHAT THE HELL, I GOT CONFUSED, I SPOKE INSTEAD OF THINKING!
"I'm glad you're enjoying the subject... Mr..." the teacher tried to find his name.
“Zero... Zack Zero.”
I saw that reference to James Bond there, you rascal.
HAHA! IT'S SO COOL TO BE CALLED ZERO!
"Can he speak?"
"I thought he was a foreigner and didn't know our language."
"If I'm not mistaken, he's from that noble family. He must be a bastard to be here."
"He's noble, but he's so weird..."
The room was filled with chatter, it seemed like collective delirium to see the unknown Zack Zero finally speak.
"Mr. Zero, I'm going to take advantage of your excitement and make a request. Please come up here."
"Of course, Ms...."
"Lofrenika." I said, kicking him with my bony legs.
Ouch, I felt that.
“Damn, I guess hallucinations include touch. Sorry about that.”
“Ms. Lo...freni...ka.”
That's right, you said it correctly.
Thanks for the info, Shi-nii.
Luckily, someone listened in class.
Zack got up from his chair and slowly walked to the front, everyone's eyes following him. The boy's shoulders felt heavy; it was the first time that his body and soul had been the center of attention.
"Okay, I want you to tell me what you see, and based on that, I'll help you improve your vision with some techniques!"
"Okay."
She made a fireball.
Man, why is it always a fireball? Like, in every story it's the same spell!
"Tell me, what color is that fire?"
"Uhh... blue."
"Impressive. Yes, I made a blue fireball."
Everyone in the room was impressed. The students leaned forward, squinting their eyes to try to see that supposed blue.
"And now, what color is it?"
"Green...."
Wow — the whole room let out a collective gasp.
"Since when does he know anything about magic!?"
"Damn noble bastards, even talent comes easy to them."
"He's kind of cute, come to think of it."
"Class, quiet!” the teacher raised her voice for the first time. “It's not a matter of talent, visualization is completely dependent on training."
Tadashi had never trained, it was just talent.
"Tell me then, what else do you see besides the fire?"
The students leaned in even closer, some even standing up.
"I see some particles coming out of the fire, they are orange in color."
"Impressive, you can see the color of my mana. Yes, it is orange!"
"Besides that, I see a magic ring circling the fire, some symbols contained within it."
The room was completely silent, which was broken by a sound that resembled a horn.
"HAHAHAHAHAH! That was a great joke, Mr. Zero," it wasn't a horn, but the teacher's laughter. "Guys, theoretically, the runes used in magic should appear around it after it’s cast, but that’s something the human eye can’t possibly perceive. Nice way to show off your brains with a joke, Mr. Zero!"
Wtf, it's literally right there.
That's what I've noticed so far in class! These guys are all magically blind, no wonder why no one seems us when following Zero. I thought we were good at hiding, but they must have seen a blur when we passed by them.
Ordinary people in this world can see the end result of magic, which means they have an initial opening of the Third eye. People in our world had it closed, their minds evading even the results of the actions of spirits and entities. As for these so-called “blue bloods,” they can “see” a little more, but it's nothing special either.
"I hope everyone trains their magical eyes like Mr. Zero here!"
Magic eyes? Even the name here was crap! Third eye is much cooler.
"Now you can sit down, and congratulations on your effort Zero," said the teacher, Zack just returning to his chair. "Everyone is free to take a break. Get plenty of rest!" said the teacher, sounding more like a Japanese idol than anything else.
I was surprised by the number of techniques they use to see the details... I mean, the details they talk about are the basics that you see.
So my power is also OP here too?
Yeah…
"YES!" everyone heard, and they didn't like it very much.
"Stuck-up jerk, thinking he's hot stuff just because he got a few questions right."
"Let's beat him up."
"He's really cute, isn't he?"
I think you better pay more attention from now on, Tadashi...
Right...
"Who would have thought? The quiet boy has some cards up his sleeve," a mysterious voice sounded behind me.
A girl sat down next to us, continuing to speak:
"The more information I get about you, the more impressed I am." said a girl next to me.
She was a slightly pale girl, her blue hair meticulously styled, matching her black-lined eyes and soft wine-colored lips.
Tadashi, do you remember her? Did I miss something in our stakeout watching Zero?
Nope, Zero doesn't have any friends.
She smiled.
"I have to admit that I've been watching you from afar. Today you're especially talkative.…Even the way you move… your walk… it carries more weight, more life. As if you were a…different person."
Tadashi swallowed hard.
God, it's me, it's been a while since we talked. Thank you... for everything.
While Tadashi regurgitated his raging hormones, my attention turned to her emphasis on the phrase.
A different person — if she knew our secret, our narrative could quickly derail.
What the hell, until the middle of the story there were only me and Tadashi as characters, and then out of nowhere a bunch of characters were introduced. I can't even remember half of their names.
If she found out something about us... maybe it's time to take a name off the character list. ....
MAN, THAT WAS DARK.
Tadashi, don't ruin my hook for the next chapter!
Are we going to kill her in the next chapter? Stay tuned to find out!
Shi-nii... it's at times like these that I remember you are Death.
And to kill the girl, YOU'LL HAVE TO GET PAST ME.
