Chapter 5:
A Game Of Magical Chairs
“Oh, look, I’m a nice guy. I don’t want girls fawning over me. What a load of crap,” Leyla murmured as she fought. After the conversation at the inn, she went to hunt monsters. Kei had sent John ahead of her before warning her about some things. For one, she wasn’t allowed to take John’s belongings. His bag and his money. It was his, to help him get accustomed to this other world.
Leyla gritted her teeth. A sharp slice of wind was enough to cut the head off a bear with one strike. A bear that would normally take three to four people to kill. If she wanted money for herself, she needed to work on her own.
This is so unfair…
She teleported from the forest straight back to the hunters' guild, not bothering to hide her abilities. She didn't have a membership with the guild, but the guild was willing to accept her results. All the hunters gasped when they saw her. She had made several back-and-forths, so the receptionist had gotten used to this.
“Back with another hunt, Miss Leyla?”
“Here.”
Leyla put the bear’s remains on top of the magic scanner. The scanner gave the receptionist the amount owed.
“Here you go. Thank you very much.”
“No problem.” Leyla accepted the pouch. Unlike John, she wasn’t given her own magic bag, so she had been storing the money in her pockets. It had gotten full, though. Maybe buying one now would be a good choice.
Leyla headed to the city’s shopping street, where various shops sell their wares. She first went to a clothing shop. Her dress with a long skirt became quite a hindrance during moments when she needed to move. Such moments weren’t common. She could kill with a simple magic, after all. But something easier to move in would be a welcome change.
Hmm… not this…
At first, Leyla wanted to head straight to the clothes she wanted, but the shop had a lot of pretty clothes. It caught her interest, and she soon found herself trying a variety of outfits.
This dress… I think it makes me look very ladylike.
She picked up the ends of the dress and did a little twirl. For some reason, she thought of herself looking too refined, despite wearing similar kind of clothes before. Maybe it was because the dress’s skirts were longer, covering her feet, while her previous dress only covered her knees.
After trying a few more outfits, she went for her original goal. A simple set of pants and a shirt would do. She also bought a hair tie, using it to tie her long hair into a ponytail.
Now, I really look like a hunter.
She looked at herself, smiling with pride. After paying for her new clothes, she went to a bag shop. Like on Earth, different bags had different prices. The bags with storage magic, similar to John’s bag, were much more expensive when compared to regular bags. It ate into her budget, but she preferred to keep their inventories separate.
She still had some money. She did went ahead and slashed some powerful monsters. Thus, she had more than enough to spend on equipment.
“Please, feel free to look around.”
The store she entered had a lot of weapons on display. Swords, shields, spears, the usual stuff. As a magic user, a magic wand would be the most beneficial. It could enhance her output even further. Maybe that would make him fear her. After picking up her magic wand, she went on and bought a map of the country.
After completing her purchases, he left the store, satisfied with her trip. She felt much more powerful now. The skies had turned dark, but maybe she could get some more monsters before returning to the inn.
Just as she prepared to teleport, she noticed a figure approaching. She turned around with a huff, the figure following after her.
“Done with your studying?” she asked curtly.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
They walked side-by-side. She didn’t have anything she wanted to ask him, while he acted as if he didn’t think she existed. It annoyed her. He was in her presence, yet he didn’t react at all.
Does he even know I changed my style? Well, I guess there’s no fault if he doesn’t.
If anything, it might be weirder if he complimented her for it. She sighed, keeping her emotions to herself.
They traveled the rest of the trip back to the inn in silence.
