Chapter 55:

Doors and Windows

Incomprehensible Simplicity

So it is just phantom pain like I thought. Yet they want me to stay the night just in case.

A sigh escapes my lips.

“There you are.” Birta’s voice announces her presence as the door to the infirmary swings open.

“Birta? Why did you come?” I inquire the teen as she walks over to my bed.

“What did you expect? We’re roommates.” She answers sitting down next to the bed.

“It’s just phantom pain.” I reply looking down at my arm.

“Phantom pain from what?” The teen asks me.

“I lost my arm to a large cat.” I respond with a sigh. “A tiger apparently.” I add.

“You lost an arm!?” My roommate stands up in surprise.

“I knew I healed from injuries quickly.” I begin. “But didn’t know I could grow an entire limb in moments.” I continue raising the regenerated limb up and lower it again.

“That’s the wonder of being pure data.” Birta’s voice says.

I look back at the ogre to see her sitting next to the bed once more, but her entire demeanor is different.

“Congratulations are in order I suppose.” Birta’s voice continues. It is definitely her voice, but not her words or personality.

“Are you here to kill me Skadi?” I inquire to the goddess possessing my roommate.

“The laws say I cannot.” She replies. “And I follow those, unlike your patron.” The goddess adds her words filled with so much venom I almost feel ill. “Even you must realize that if I could kill you I would have done so long ago.” She explains with a cold smile. That expression is more terrifying than the venom filled words.

“No reason for you to lie.” I respond with a sigh.

“Correct, you do truly catch on quickly.” The goddess says crossing her arms, almost as if it was painful for her to complement me even mockingly.

A moment of chilling silence builds between the winter goddess and I until she finally speaks once more.

“Congratulations on avoiding telling the truth once more.” The goddess smugly says giving a slow sarcastic applause. This is the patron of this guild, seriously? “Impressed you never bother explaining what data is to these people.” She continues condescension dripping from every word. “Well that was all I really wanted to say to you reborn.” Skadi finishes looking away from me. Probably out of boredom. The teen grabs her head and groans.

“What happened?” Birta asks me. There she is.

“I’m not sure if I should tell you.” I answer looking at the floor near her feet.

“Why? What happened granny?” She asks.

“You really don’t want to know.” I reply with a sigh.

“That just makes me want to know even more!” She exclaims in annoyance. I sigh once again.

“You were momentarily possessed by Skadi.” I answer before looking back at my regenerated arm.

“I was what!?” She exclaims standing up once more in surprise.

-- -- --

I walk into the lobby of our dorm building to the sight of multiple adults heading up the stairs. I follow them since there is no such thing as an elevator here apparently. It would probably be a teleporter and I would just have to take the stairs anyways…

I follow the group of adults up to my floor. Are they here for what I think they are!? The group stops in front of the large plank blocking my dorm room.

“What is this thing doing here?” The elf male asks the others while pointing at the makeshift door.

“Move it.” The ogre female replies before stepping up to it.

“We should probably knock first.” The male orc says. The ogre stops herself from grabbing the plank and instead simply knocks on it.

“Hello?” The ogre inquires.

“Yes?” Birta’s voice asks back coming from our room.

“We’re here to fix the door and window.” The ogre answers. Yes! They are here for what I thought!

“Finally!” Birta yells from behind the plank before moving it.

“It won’t take long miss.” The elf says with a tip of his baseball cap. Well it looks like one anyways, it probably just has a different name here.

“It better not with how long we’ve had to wait!” Birta says letting her annoyance and anger out about this hassle.

“Like half a year.” I groan stepping past the group of repairmen.

The work is fast and efficient. Maybe not even an hour.

“Well that should do it.” The orc says patting the newly installed window. “The enchanter will come by in a wai.” He adds before stepping out of the room.

“We’ll hold you to that.” I say while the orc steps out closing the door behind him.

“Too bad we had to endure all of summer without the window.” Birta groans plopping onto her bed.

“At least we got it back before winter.” I reply walking over to my bed. “Plus we now have actual privacy again.” I add with a grin sitting down.

A quietness fills the room, neither of us feeling like talking at the moment.

A knock at the door shatters the serene silence.

“Who is it?” I ask looking at the door. It definitely could not be the enchanter. They said one wai, which really means two wai or more.

“It’s Gota Metra.” Gota’s voice says from the other side of the door. “Glad to see you finally got your door and window!” She says.

I stand up with a sigh and open the door to see the dwarf smiling at me. I want to yell at her about how we would not have had to wait for them if she did not destroy them in the first place. But she looks so adorable when she smiles, I just cannot force myself to say that.

“Thanks Gota.” I reply with a fake smile.
