Chapter 16:

We just want to rest...

The wrong way to use magic in another world.

As soon as we reached the town's gate, a guard told us exactly what we did not want to hear.

Guard: I'm sorry, travellers. But all inns are closed for now. The nara appeared to the east of town, and everyone locked their doors. If you come into the town, you will not find a place to stay, at least not until we deal with the nara.

Leonel: You've got to be kidding me... I said in a barely audible voice. I was tired.

Faylinn: Whaaaat!? I want my dinner!!! Faylinn was definitely angry.

Astra: Excuse me, guards, can you give us more details about what happened?

Guard: Three nara appeared east from here. We dispatched several guards, an elf specialized in lightning magic, a mercenary lizardman, and a dryad acting as a healer. None of them are dealing any damage.

Faylinn: Astra, Leo, come with me! Faylinn was enraged. Her usual red eyes seemed to be burning. Her expression was definitely scary.
She rushed to the eastern part of town.
She was using her fire strengthening magic on her legs to run faster.
We couldn't catch up with her. She was getting further and further away from us.

Astra: Leo, don't even try to catch up with her, just take your time.

It seems that Astra was lowering her pace to avoid leaving me behind. I felt really bad.

Faylinn was probably already at the eastern gate of the town.

Leonel: Astra, what are we going to do once we get there? I said while still running toward the eastern gate.

Astra: What do you mean? Astra seemed confused.

Leonel: The guards said they sent a lot of people to fight the nara, but they weren't dealing any damage to them.

Astra: So?

Leonel: Well, how are we gonna fight them? Any plans?

Astra: Oh, silly Leo. Sometimes your ignorance makes you cuter.

Leonel: Eh...?

Astra: We don't need any strategy to deal with them. In fact, we will be lucky if there are any of them left by the time we get there.

Leonel: Are you saying that Faylinn knows how to defeat them?

Astra: No, but she will find out in no time.

We finally reached the eastern gate of this small town. We could see a bunch of guards with spears, the elf, the lizardman, and the dryad we heard about. But they were all keeping their distance... from the actual battle.

Two charred humanoid bodies, presumably the nara, could be seen on the ground, and right between them, Faylinn was holding a nara by its head. The black fog surrounding the body of the nara held by Faylinn quickly dissipated, revealing a small body with large muscles and holding an axe.
Faylinn dropped the body in the same way a kid would drop a bag of cookies after it's empty...
She then turned around and spotted us.

Faylinn: HEYYYY! I FINISHED THE JOB! CAN WE GO TO THE INN NOW? Faylinn was shouting from several meters away.

Astra: I guess we missed the show...

Leonel: What happened here? Did she just defeat them all by herself?

Astra: Yeah, probably.

Faylinn came to us and inquired about the only thing that was occupying her mind: "Leo, can we go to the inn to have dinner? The nara bastards are gone. Now they have no reason to keep all their inns closed!"

Leonel: Wait, wait, wait, how did you even defeat them? The guards told us that no one could damage them.

Faylinn: Well, that's true. They were very resilient, and their skin had strong magic resistance. They were probably dwarves. So I just grabbed them by the head, opened their mouth, and incinerated them from the inside. Even those who have the most resilient exterior are still vulnerable when they're burnt from the inside.

The darkest words came out of the mouth of this little girl, who looked just like a cute and short teenager, and had a childish personality.
This world was wilder than I thought...

Astra: I guess the problem is solved. Inns should be opening again now.

Leonel: I guess you are right...

One of the guards that were fighting the nara approached us.

Guard: Thank you, little draconer. We were in serious trouble until you helped us.

Faylinn: Aww, you are welcome. But if you REALLY want to thank us, there is something you can do for us.

Guard: What is it?

Faylinn: Well, we just arrived, but all the inns in town were closed because of the nara. Maybe you can convince them to open their doors now? Oh, and a small cash reward for defeating the nara would be fine.

Guard: Of course. Follow me. I'll take you to the best inn in town. As for the cash reward, you can come to the eastern gate to collect it tomorrow morning.

The guard led us to an inn that looked like a thin and yet tall tower. In fact, most buildings in town looked like towers, but this one had some very detailed golden hexagonal patterns on its exterior. It had a total of six floors, and tiny bees made of copper were hanging from chains from the upper part of the window frames. The building seemed to have a total of six walls, made of dark marble, unlike the usual four walls you would see in buildings in our world. There was a signboard at the entrance, but of course, we couldn't read it.

Guard: Welcome to the Golden Honeypot. It's by far the best inn in town. Very high quality food and rooms. I'll talk to the owner and I'll make sure you can stay for free. The owner will be happy now that the nara are gone.

We went inside and we certainly saw what must have been the best inn in town, because it was hard to imagine that there could be anything better around here. Tables and chairs made of shiny dark wood with edges covered in polished copper, and a floor made of tiles of some sort of black and orange marble. Flower-shaped copper chandeliers hung from the ceiling, with red candles on them providing illumination in the middle of the night.

An old guy with short white hair and a dark red shirt and pants approached the guard that led us to the inn.

Old guy: What's going on? Are the nara finally gone?

Guard: Yes, this little orange-haired draconer defeated them.

Faylinn: Feel free to praise me! Faylinn sounded simultaneously happy and proud of herself.

Old guy: Well, thank you for putting an end to those annoying nara. I was afraid it was going to affect our business. Last time the nara appeared, it kept people away from our town for three days.

Faylinn: Surely you must feel indebted to me, considering I just saved your business. said Faylinn with a smug expression on her face. She wasn't being subtle at all.

Old guy: Oh, you don't hold back, do you? Don't worry, I can offer you a room for one or two days as a reward for defeating the nara. I will even include some food. I hope you are okay with mid-level rooms though.

Faylinn: I'm fine with any room, as long as we get to eat right away and go to bed. We are suuuuper tired.

Old guy: Ok, I'll get some food ready for your group. Just pick a table and wait a few minutes. We will get you some roasted "kobmeat" with some of the finest honey in our kingdom. It's our town's pride.

The old guy went back to the kitchen. Curiosity was killing me, so I just had to ask.

Leonel: Girls, what's "kobmeat"?

Astra: Kobold's meat. It's supposedly good for your muscles. No idea if that's true though.

Faylinn: I heard it makes your body more vulnerable to lightning.

Astra: That's probably a myth.

Leonel: Aren't kobolds supposed to be some kind of sentient creatures that love mining? Is it even okay to kill them and eat them? I asked with a shocked expression. A kobold isn't even an animal, and yet, people eat them? This is crazy.

Astra: Leo, the kobolds in the nearby mountains would kidnap you and throw you into their stew if they had the chance. That's why we usually do the same thing to them.

Faylinn: But in this town they don't throw them into the stew, they roast them. They taste great with lemon juice and honey.

This world is wild. I'll never get used to it...

Faylinn: Leo, what are our plans for tomorrow?

Leonel: First thing would be to visit the eastern gate to get Faylinn's reward. Then maybe visit the blacksmith. Do you guys think I should replace my broken short sword?

Faylinn: You will probably break your sword again since you don't know how to use one.

Astra: Faylinn is right. Maybe a poison dagger would be a better option.

Leonel: A poison dagger? Isn't that just a regular dagger covered in poison?

Astra: Not quite. A poison dagger is sturdier than a regular dagger or a sword, and cannot be used for slashing; it's only good at piercing and stabbing. Also, there are usually a few extremely tiny holes in them, which are filled with poison, and then sealed with a special wax. Once you stab a hot-blooded enemy, their body heat will almost instantly melt the wax, releasing the poison into their bodies. A similar design is used in poison arrow tips.

Leonel: Wait, poison arrows might be very useful. They might be better than a poison dagger.

Faylinn: Leo, have you ever used a bow?

Leonel: Well... no, but I'm sure it can't be that hard.

Astra: Using a bow to shoot from a safe distance requires a lot of strength, which for you would only be possible using fire strengthening magic every time you wanted to shoot.

Faylinn: Also, using a bow against a practice target is easy, but using it in combat is much harder than you think. I've seen mercenaries missing their shots and dying before they could land a single arrow on their enemies.

Astra: I still believe a poison dagger might be a better option for you.

Leonel: I guess I'll try to get the dagger after all...

Faylinn suddenly interrupted us.

Faylinn: Hey, the food is coming!

We ended up spending dinner time talking about weapons I could never use and enemies I could never defeat.
But the food was great. I felt bad for the kobolds though.
Once we were done eating, we went to our room, to get a well-deserved rest.
But sweet dreams would elude me.
Instead, I would be faced by the usual masked person in the land of dreams.
