Chapter 20:
Echoes Beneath Forgotten Stars Volume 2
In the soft morning light, the sun gently awakens over Akarihoshi, spilling golden and violet reflections across the palace gardens. Aiko and Akihiko stroll hand in hand among the shimmering, blooming bushes, her fingers lightly tugging at his as if to remind him to stay close. Akihiko responds with quiet squeezes of her hand, his warm gaze speaking volumes without a single word – each heartbeat with her is a home, a sanctuary. Their laughter rings out, pure and light, playful as children at play, filling the morning air with vibrant, almost tangible energy.
In a futuristic hall bathed in the gentle glow of lights, soft instrumental music floating through the air, they take up their swords for a playful duel. There is no tension, no danger – every movement is a dance, every strike more playful than combative. Aiko tries to surprise him with a cheeky maneuver, but Akihiko smiles, calm and confident, showing her a special technique he had mastered at the military academy. This time, it is a playful demonstration, stripped of all seriousness. In a heartbeat, faster than she can react, he disarms her. Gently catching her hands to keep her steady, he pulls her close, so close that their hearts almost collide.
His body radiates warmth and protection, entwined with affection. Aiko shivers slightly, her laughter caught in her throat. “Hah… I see I’ve caught you,” Akihiko whispers. Her eyes sparkle like fire, a mischievous smile tugging at her lips. “That’s not fair… but…” Her words dissolve into the tiny sparks of energy that shimmer between them. Their faces are so close that she can feel his breath, and he hers.
Then a tiny stumble – Aiko trips over her own foot. With a soft gasp, she loses her balance. Instinctively, Akihiko catches her, and they land together on the sleek, futuristic floor, pressed close. Laughter mixes with surprise, and Aiko feels his warmth beneath her. Her cheeks flare, and a fluttering rush of exhilaration and affection courses through her – she is completely caught in his embrace, almost too close, almost too intimate.
Akihiko looks at her, softness and devotion shining in his eyes. “Do you remember…?” he whispers.
Aiko blushes, her gaze shy but playful. “How could I ever forget…?” Their faces draw even closer, and when Akihiko gently cups her face with his hands, their lips meet. First soft, then deep and passionate, the kiss carries all the emotions they have long kept hidden – love, longing, relief, and joy, mingling in one heartbeat.
And then… shhhh! The door slid open. Naoru freezes at the threshold, eyes wide. “Uh…” he covers his face with one hand. “I see you two are… productive.”
Aiko jumps back like a spring, face ablaze with embarrassment, while Akihiko adjusts his uniform, trying to maintain composure, though his slight blush betrays him. Naoru sighs deeply, mumbling, “Seriously… does this always happen when I walk in?” From the hallway, Mika’s melodic giggle echoes: “Naoru, maybe you’re just the mascot for interrupting romantic moments!”
Aiko bursts into uncontrollable laughter, first shy, then full-bodied, and Akihiko chuckles along, the awkwardness melting into warmth, into joy, into something almost magical.
Later, they wander through the city square. Futuristic towers of crystalline glass stretch toward the sky, floating platforms hover gracefully, and holographic marketplaces shimmer with rainbow light. Stalls offer exotic fruits, sparkling crystal beverages, and delicate energy artifacts, while floating holograms display local news and whimsical animated art. Children with wide, sparkling eyes run toward them, waving, whispering, and giggling at the sight of a prince and a princess wrapped in a soft, radiant aura of love. Aiko, resplendent in her elegant gown, her star-shaped pendant catching the light, moves with the grace of a princess yet smiles with gentle, approachable warmth. She tastes a luscious fruit, reminiscent of the juiciest peach, and dreamily turns to Akihiko: “You know… I missed this simple life.”
Akihiko gently takes her hand, holding it warmly. “It can always be simple, Aiko. Together, we will create moments that belong only to us.”
As evening falls, they settle on the palace balcony. Two moons cast silvery light across the sky, while stars shimmer like diamonds. Aiko rests her head on his shoulder, Akihiko’s arm draped protectively around her. They whisper secrets, share laughter, and dream of a future together. In that moment, there are no duties, no titles, no danger – just two hearts beating as one.
Aiko senses the weight in his eyes and softly asks, “Akihiko… something’s troubling you, isn’t it?”
He hesitates, then exhales deeply, glancing away as if seeking courage from the cosmos.
“Aiko… I need to tell you something. While you were in danger… to protect you, so Tsukina wouldn’t suspect that I was acting against her… I had to kiss her.” His voice trembles, filled with guilt. “Every moment felt wrong, but if I hadn’t, she would have discovered the truth – and I would have lost you. Aiko, I swear, my heart… has always been and will always be only yours.”
A tense, suspended silence follows. Akihiko holds his breath, the worry in his eyes more piercing than any blade. Aiko studies him, and instead of anger, a gentle, understanding warmth fills her gaze.
Her hand rises, fingers brushing lightly against his face.
“Akihiko…” she whispers softly, “I know. I know you would do anything to protect me. And I know you didn’t kiss her for love… you chose me, even before that moment.”
Her eyes glimmer in soft red-gold light, her words flowing like a healing energy.
“Don’t worry. That wasn’t the kiss of the heart. This…” Her lips meet his in a gentle yet deep kiss on his lips, “this is the real one.”
Akihiko, who feared losing her smile, feels an enormous weight lift from his chest. He holds her even tighter, as if never wanting to let her go.
“Aiko…” he whispers, voice trembling, “thank you for believing in me.”
Aiko smiles, serene and strong. “Always, Akihiko. Even when you doubt yourself.”
Their energies merge, white-blue and red-gold lights spiraling around them on the balcony, as if the universe itself celebrates this moment of truth, forgiveness, and love.
When night finally falls, Akihiko escorts Aiko to her chambers. Her hands clasp lightly around him; the embrace is tender, yet brimming with love. Before parting, Aiko leans in and plants a soft, deep kiss on his lips – a promise of the dreams they will share together as a couple, as prince and princess, as betrothed souls.
Later, Akihiko returns to his chamber. Outside, a gentle breeze stirs, carrying the distant hum of Akarihoshi. After so long, thinking he had lost her, he opens a drawer to reveal a small, precious item – their engagement ring, the promise they had once made. His hand trembles slightly, determination shining in his eyes. He slips the ring onto his finger, takes a deep, steadying breath, and whispers, “I will never lose you again.”
