Chapter 1:
When Life Gives You Tangerine
The sun was dipping below the horizon, casting a soft golden hue all across the palace, making the infrastructure look more heavenly than ever.
It was Yun-ji's job to deliver the message to the military general of the East wing today, and she was definitely thrilled.
"I'd rather drink that disgusting green tea..." Yun-ji mumbled, looking up at the darkening sky. Okay maybe she wasn't that thrilled... Oops.
Shaking her head out of those thoughts, she quickly made her way towards the East wing.
There were people born with special abilities in this world, and the ones who didn't have these abilities, well... Let's just say they weren't desired, they were usually sold off as sex workers, palace workers or married off to rich merchants or officials, if they were beautiful enough that is... Yun-ji didn't have a problem in that criteria, she was pretty enough, pink hair, blue eyes and plump lips, she almost fit the beauty standard..
There was another criteria you see, apart from beauty, you also needed well... Assets to survive as a powerless person...
God was kind to Yun-ji on the face and brains part, but he seemingly got too lazy while shaping her, flat chest, short height, no ass or curves, yep... She definitely wasn't seducing any high ranking official or a millitary man anytime soon...
She had already been working in the palace for the past five months, and her term might end soon, and she had absolutely no plans for whatever she'd do once she's out of here, that was one problem. Out of the many she was currently facing. She couldn't find the Military General, how was she supposed to deliver this letter to him?
Apparently, it was a love letter from one of the concubines, you see, being a Concubine may sound like it's a life of luxury, but only for the high ranking ones... As fir the others, they had to live in small crammed rooms shared with two other concubines, and the only way to get out of this miserable life was to either earn the favour of the king, which wasn't happening anytime soon considering how busy the king is these days due to the impending war. So the only other way out, was to seduce a high ranking official, and elope with him. It was a stupid, but desperate move...
Finally, she spotted the General, a tall, imposing man with dark hair and even darker eyes, he was wiping his sweat, probably just got out of practice, probably with another high ranking officer, considering the sweat and the way he's panting, he was fighting against someone his level, who could it be? Oh well, that was none of her business, she just quietly and quickly gave him the letter like a good little servant.
"You heard?" She overheard another officer speak to his commrade, leaning on his shoulder. She hadn't meant to eavesdrop, but she couldn't help it.
"Hear what?" Asked the shorter guy.
"Apparently, the North wing's captain has been poisoned and the Private is the suspect?" He asked, a hint of mischief in his voice.
Well that isn't new, but why would a Private poison the the Captain? After all, it's not like he will become the Captain if the first one dies...
"Suspicious..."
