Chapter 39:
A Game Of Magical Chairs
After that, they went through the mansion’s floor plan. Isak gathered what information he could. Since this wasn’t Earth, there was no internet where they could collect information. Isak only had the information from his colleagues who had entered the building. He based the blueprint on their description.
They studied the floor plan together.
“So, if you can teleport us here…” Isak pointed to a room on the third floor. It was an empty room, based on what his colleagues had gathered. They had described it as ‘mysterious’ but didn’t give the details on why.
Since Leyla wasn’t a resident of this world, the magic she used was different. She didn’t need to know the location’s precise coordinates. She didn’t need to imagine the place; she didn’t have to have gone there before. She could teleport them where they wanted without issue. She didn’t need to deal with magic barriers, either.
“We can teleport straight into the office,” Leyla suggested, but Isak shook his head.
“What if the things we’re looking for aren't in the office?”
Since the office was the obvious location to store documents, the count might not put them in there in the first place. It was also the obvious spot for someone to teleport into. They might put traps in there. While Leyla could teleport between rooms, her magic would deplete faster.
“We can just move normally.”
“Aren’t the doors locked, though?” John asked.
Isak smiled, a hint of pride behind his lips. “I can lockpick, remember?”
It made sense. A royal investigator should be able to enter places others couldn’t. He did use his skills to quicken the chest unlocking time when they were in the dungeon.
“So we can save my magic for entering and leaving the mansion?”
“Precisely.”
They had practiced their sneaking skill when they explored the dungeon. They needed to pass the monsters undetected. While John wasn't confident of his ability to fight, he was sure he could stay out of sight.
Besides, the count probably wanted to prevent people from entering in the first place. There shouldn't be a lot of people inside.
“Do you have any other spells you can use?”
“... I'm sure I can use sleeping spells.”
It should allow them to knock out the guards.
“So, we'll enter the office, then we'll split up. We look for what we need, and you look for evidence.”
John and Leyla would be looking for the chair the second they arrived. Based on what they knew from the other chairs, the chair had mysteriously appeared. It shouldn't be the count's, so they're just recovering what wasn't his in the first place. And since they were just looking for the chair, they wouldn’t need to lockpick. Leyla could afford two teleports, one in and one out.
“Once we've found everything we need, we'll rendezvous in the office and teleport out.”
“I can already imagine his anger once he woke up the next morning,” Isak said with a chuckle.
Thinking about it, John really didn't want to get involved. But he has no other option.
This is really risky…
They didn't want to mess with a count. Had the count let them get the chair, they wouldn't be here. But, they couldn't sit this out, either. Isak would find a way regardless. If Count Karejo got arrested, then entering the mansion might be even more difficult. Soldiers from the kingdom would be keeping a close watch.
Some items might be confiscated. If the chair was among them, things would get even more complicated.
“Will your other subordinates be involved?” John asked.
Isak shook his head. “I don’t really have anyone else here at the moment, and I can’t wait for them.”
Rumors said that the count had plans. It was uncertain what these plans were, or if these plans had anything to do with the mission itself. Isak couldn’t risk it. Plus, the king himself had asked him to launch this mission. It was his job to see this through.
“We’ll go tomorrow night. Don’t worry, it’ll be easy.”
John could only hope that was true. They then finalized the plan. After that, John and Leyla went to their room to rest.
“Leyla.”
Despite being in separate beds, the room wasn’t large. There wasn’t much space separating the two.
Hearing him call her name, Leyla turned around. “Hmm?”
“Will you be alright tomorrow?”
“... Why the sudden concern?”
“Your magic.”
Leyla had been warned to be careful with using magic, as she might run out. Teleportation took a toll, so she couldn't use it often. They would be using teleportation twice at a minimum, once to enter and once to leave.
“You're worried about getting stuck there?”
“I guess so.”
Things would be much more difficult if they got caught. They need to bring the key with them to find the chair. If they got caught, the key would surely be taken. They couldn't call Kei, and who knows how long they'll spend in prison. Since they faced a noble, the consequences might be heavier as well.
John didn’t want to go to another world, spend so much work, just to die again.
“Well, I’m not too concerned. Not like they can do anything to me.”
“... You mean?”
“I’m a laikaat, remember? Even without my magic, humans can’t harm me.”
If Leyla wasn’t concerned, then he had no reason to worry.
“Just go to sleep. I don’t want to carry you tomorrow.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t slow you down.”
“I hope you’re serious about that.” She turned away.
John sighed and closed his eyes.
