Chapter 36:
Echoes Beneath Forgotten Stars Volume 2
As Aiko steadied her breath, she continued her quiet exploration of the ruins. Her steps were soft, cautious, as if the stones themselves carried memories too fragile to disturb. Suddenly, her fingers brushed against something cold beneath the debris. With trembling care, she lifted a small, dust-covered object. Though scarred by time, its shape remained recognizable—a delicate golden frame.
Inside, a faded portrait gleamed. Her eyes widened, her heart leapt. Two faces smiled back at her—her mother’s gentle gaze and her father’s protective smile. The memories within her still lay blurred like a foggy mirror, but the emotions were raw, alive, searing through her chest like sunlight breaking through mist.
Her lips quivered as she pressed the frame close to her heart. “Mother… Father… you will always be with me.”
Akihiko stepped closer, drawn by the gravity of her moment. His blue eyes softened as he reached for her trembling hand. “Everything that belongs to you, I will guard, Princess. Even the memories that mean everything to you.”
Her head dipped in a quiet nod, grief and love mingling, pain sharpening into strength. With this frame in her hands, she felt a new tether to her parents, a bridge between past and present, sorrow and courage.
She walked on, weaving between broken columns and shattered stone. Suddenly, Akihiko’s instincts screamed—a loosened pillar broke free. Without hesitation, his arm shot out, pulling her back just as the heavy slab thundered to the ground. The dust swirled, and Aiko froze, heart hammering like a trapped bird, her breath shallow. She turned to him, gratitude shimmering in her eyes.
“Thank you…” she whispered, shaken but alive.
He placed a steadying hand on her shoulder, his voice low yet filled with a protective tenderness. “We must tread carefully here. The past can still wound.”
Her nod was faint, but she clung to the warmth of his touch. In that moment, she realized—Akihiko wasn’t only her prince. He was her guardian, her ally, the unyielding anchor she could lean on.
As her racing pulse slowed, her gaze swept the hall once more. Something caught her eye—a cradle, old and gilded, half buried in the rubble. The golden curves were dented and worn, yet unmistakable. She stepped closer, breath catching. This cradle… she remembered. This was where she had once been laid, where her tiny world had begun.
Her fingers traced the edge, dust clinging to her skin. A sudden warmth spread through her chest. She could almost hear a lullaby, almost feel her mother’s embrace. She closed her eyes and, for a fleeting second, past and present blurred together.
Akihiko approached, his steps hushed. He laid his hand gently over hers, his gaze locking onto hers with a depth that carried years of memory. “Aiko… this is where we first met,” he whispered, his voice tinged with nostalgia.
Her chest tightened, her heart caught in his words. When she met his blue eyes, the ruins melted away, and only the bond between them remained.
Together they stepped outside the broken hall. The landscape stretched endlessly—desert, dust, and silence. Not a blade of grass, not a single bloom. It was as if the planet itself had died the night her parents did. Yet something stirred within her. A whisper, a pull. The planet itself was calling.
She fell to her knees, pressing her palm to a crack in the barren ground. At once, her senses flooded. She felt every pulse, every whisper echoing from the earth—mournful, but alive. As if the planet had been waiting all these years… just for her.
Akihiko stood behind her, silent but vigilant. His eyes softened, watching her shoulders tremble under the weight of what she felt. Naoru and Mika lingered in the distance, their silence respectful, their hearts stirred by the gravity of the moment.
Aiko closed her eyes, her breath steadying. A warmth surged from the earth into her veins, a current of sorrow and hope entwined. Then, suddenly—light. A gentle glow pulsed from her chest, spreading outward until her entire form was wreathed in a golden-crimson aura.
Akihiko stiffened, protective instinct flaring, but he knew this power was not to be stopped. He raised a hand to Naoru and Mika. “Step back,” he whispered. His gaze never left her.
The wind rose violently, spiraling around Aiko. Sand and dust danced in a furious storm, yet none touched her—it circled protectively, like a ritual born of the planet itself. A symbol began to shimmer on her wrist—the crest of her royal bloodline, glowing bright in molten gold and fiery red, beating in rhythm with her heart.
The earth responded. Beneath her hand, cracks split open. Tiny green shoots forced their way through the dry soil. Grass unfurled, wildflowers bloomed in dazzling colors, their petals swaying in the storm’s wake. A dead world whispered back to life in the circle of her power.
Her voice was barely a breath, but it carried the strength of a promise. “I feel it… my planet. It wasn’t dead. It was only asleep. Waiting for me.”
Akihiko’s eyes widened, awe softening every edge of him. His voice trembled with reverence. “Aiko… you are the heart of your planet.”
Naoru and Mika exchanged a look—words failed them. They knew they were witnessing not just a miracle, but history reborn.
The storm eased, the petals around her glistened with impossible color. Her aura dimmed, flickering like a fading flame. She opened her eyes—only for them to flutter closed. Her body swayed, and she collapsed.
“Aiko!” Akihiko’s cry rang with both fear and devotion. In an instant, he caught her, cradling her against his chest before she could fall. Her head rested limply against his shoulder, her breathing slow but steady.
He held her close, relief washing over him even as worry lingered. "Too much. She gave too much of herself."
Naoru and Mika rushed forward, alarm flashing in their eyes, but Akihiko raised a hand to stop them. His voice was quiet, unyielding. “Do not fear. She only sleeps. She poured her soul into this.”
Mika’s gaze shifted to the flowers blooming defiantly from the dust, her voice breaking into a whisper. “But look… she succeeded. The planet answered her.”
