Chapter 22:
Falling down the worlds stream
I was sloppy, too much, embarrassingly so.
I jumped through the roofs while Ruscerb followed me, refusing to let me out of his sight. He looked outright manic in his rage. Did someone piss him off before he found me?
This could not be just for the time I kicked his ass in the forest.
I had managed to find the prison and infiltrated in to look for everyone, only to then find Ruscerb, in all his scared glory, going down the stairs and finding me sneaking around. If I wasn’t a better runner than him, he would have nailed me back then.
But thinking back, I think he was already fuming when he came down from the roof. If he’s this mad, maybe I can solve this more easily than I thought.
Finding a big building, with an ample and horizontal roof to stand in, I finally prepared to fight. I moved to the side, trying to get out of his way, before turning around, ready to intercept his first attack.
He jumped towards me like an animal, his spear pointfirst, trying to impale me through the head. I allowed the light to course through me faster for a moment, giving me a burst of speed for a second. Just enough for me to use my own spear and knock his off course a little bit. Moving his spear also moved the asshole who was holding it, changing his direction slightly to the side.
He was now barreling towards me at full speed, right into the fist I put into the air.
Unfortunately, he managed to get his bearing in time and knocked my fist with his own before I could faceplant him into the ground.
We collided harshly, both falling into the ground, but both jumped back into fighting position immediately.
We looked at each other, circling, just outside the range of each other’s spear. Even if he’s a moron, I’m sure he must have had a military training of some kind, meaning that I should not approach this as a regular fight or I’ll lose.
Back to the ol’ reliable then.
“What’s wrong dumbass? Decided you wanted another scar to accompany the one in your chest?” I said, trying to provoke him. “Maybe this time I’ll cut on the other side, make it nice and symmetrical.”
If he’s furious he’ll surely be too much of an idiot to use his advantages agaisnt me.
But for some reason, instead of getting angrier, he just smiled.
“You know, I had a similar idea. When I threw your little boyfriend into his cell, I gave him two slashes as a gift. The symmetry really stands out when painted in red blood” He said, tracing an x over his chest.
I felt my mind shutting down for a moment, while trying to process what I had just heard.
He was alive. He did manage to survive.
And they captured him.
And Ruscerb just admitted that he slashed the idiot that I had been tasked with taking care of. That little weak moron that infuriated me so much, but was my responsibility and that I had decided to take care of until the end.
In my mind popped the image of Ruscerb, taking a knife and slowly cutting through his chest, enjoying every moment.
I saw red.
I jumped headfirst, with a burst of light, trying to kill him in a single blow.
He smiled when I did.
He was slower than I was, but he saw my attack coming from a mile away. As soon as I was in range, he twisted away from my lunge and swung his spear towards me, hitting me in the side and pushing me to the groundwith a very loud thud.
I felt as if all the air abandoned my lungs when I hit the roof. It took me a moment to recuperate, but in that moment, Ruscerb had already put a feet on top of me, pointing his spear at my chest.
“This one is for revenge.” He said, right as he slashed my chest in the same way I had slashed him in the forest. I screamed in pain, tried to escape, but he pressed against my stomach with his foot.
“And this one, is for myself.” He said, as he slashed another line in my chest, making them symmetrical.
He smiled, happy with the work he had done.
“It truly looks great, every time. And now…”
He approached the spear to my face.
“I think it’s my turn to give you a parting gift.” He said, starting to press the spear agaisnt my face.
I was terrified, without air, looking at him in the eyes. I saw the scar he had in his face, it went across it, completely.
He was trying to do the same to me.
With a scream, I abandoned all light inside of me, instead, I grabbed the darkness below and pushed it upwards with all my strength.
In seconds, we were now trapped in the middle of a veil. Our senses had been completely stolen. I could not feel his foot in my chest nor the spear on my face. Maybe they were still there, maybe not. If I was lucky, he probably lost balance when he suddenly lost all sense of feel.
Soon, darkness had started growing and spreading, the veil now extending deep into the sky.
I was absolutely terrified. We both screamed, but the sound was devoured by the darkness surrounding us. Soon enough, I calmed down enough to know what to do.
As the light returned to me, my senses did too. It was as if my own skin was shining, as if I was now a beacon that repelled the darkness around me. Now, feeling the ground beneath my feet, I gave a great leap forward, freeing myself from the veil I had created.
I got out of the veil and kept falling, landing in a neighboring roof that was slightly lower. I tried to control my breathing that was all out of whack, while trying to stop the bleeding from the wound in my chest.
But that was not the most important thing.
I looked around, Ruscerb was nowhere to be seen.
It’s not my most honourable tactic, but I ran away. While I am out of sight and everyone is now distracted by the enormous veil in the middle of the city, Iwould go to the prison and free everyone I ever cared for.
