Chapter 44:
The Reincarnation of the Goddess of Reincarnator
Dealing with the 'Goblin Genius' incident was a bureaucratic nightmare. I had to file three separate reports and officially classify 'Behelgard' as a 'High-Risk Experimental World.' I put Kenji on a special watch list and set up alerts in case he ever invented gunpowder or, worse, a functional sewage system.
The stress was getting to me. I decided to handle a simple, wholesome case to calm my nerves. I pulled up the file for Yui Amano. She was a sweet, gentle soul who had died pushing a kitten out of the path of an oncoming bicycle. Her karma score was sparkling.
I initiated the consultation. The soul of a young woman with kind eyes and a gentle smile appeared in the portal.
"Yui Amano," I said, my voice warm and reassuring. "Your selflessness was exemplary. The system has marked you for a Class-A reincarnation package. You can have almost anything you wish for."
She bowed her head shyly. "Oh, um, thank you, Goddess-sama," she stammered. "I don't need much. In my life, I always felt so helpless. I just… I want to be a great protector. Someone strong, who can keep everyone I care about safe and warm."
My celestial heart melted. After dealing with Kenji's 30-page list of demands, this simple, pure-hearted wish was a breath of fresh air.
"An admirable wish," I said, already designing her new life. "I will reincarnate you in the peaceful kingdom of Astoria. You will be born into a noble family and will have the talent to join the Royal Knights. Your divine skill will be 'Aegis of the Guardian,' allowing you to create impenetrable shields to protect your allies."
Tears of gratitude welled up in Yui's eyes. "Thank you! Thank you so much!"
"It is my pleasure," I said, beaming. "I'll enroll you in the most prestigious knightly order in the kingdom. You'll be a fine Dragoon."
I was typing the final commands into the console as I spoke. 'Race: Human,' 'Class: Holy Knight,' 'Affiliation: Royal Dragoon Knightly Order.' Everything was perfect.
Just as I was about to hit 'Confirm,' a blaring red alert flashed on a secondary monitor. [WARNING: UNUSUAL GOBLIN ACTIVITY DETECTED IN WORLD #BEHELGARD-776.]
Kenji. He was already making moves.
The alert distracted me for only a fraction of a second, but it was enough. My finger, which was typing the word 'Dragoon,' slipped. I accidentally typed 'Dragon' instead.
The system, being a painfully literal piece of divine machinery, tried to make sense of the conflicting data. 'Class: Holy Knight,' 'Affiliation: Royal Dragon Knightly Order,' 'Race: Human.' And the keyword 'Dragon.' It cross-referenced the primary request: "a great protector... keep everyone safe and warm." It saw the typo not as an error, but as a clarification.
Before I could even register my mistake, the system auto-corrected the package based on the new, dominant keyword.
[PACKAGE MODIFIED TO ALIGN WITH CORE DIRECTIVES. CONFIRMED. SOUL OF YUI AMANO SUCCESSFULLY REINCARNATED. RACE: LESSER DRAGON HATCHLING (GUARDIAN TYPE). UNIQUE SKILL: IMPRINT & PROTECT. GOOD LUCK!]
The portal closed. Yui was gone.
I stared at the screen. I had just turned a sweet girl who wanted to be a knight into a fire-breathing lizard with what sounded suspiciously like celestial separation anxiety.
I laid my head on my console and wept. I was a terrible goddess.
