Chapter 19:
The Female Leads Have Eyes For Only Me
Bertram continued to stab the werewolf’s back.
He grunted and groaned. Beads of sweat flung off his face.
“Come on!” he yelled. “Go back to the damn Underworld already!”
The werewolf’s fatal wounds were stitching themselves back together.
With each new wound that Bertram inflicted, an old stab wound closed up.
“Damn it!”
Bertram stabbed the werewolf again.
“Damn it!”
Bertram was in the motion of stabbing the werewolf’s back again when the creature growled.
“?!”
Grabbing onto the back of Bertram’s shirt, Arnold pulled him away.
“That’s enough!” he yelled. “There’s no stopping it!”
I helped Ophelia up and moved away from the lying werewolf.
The werewolf’s body started twitching. Soon, it moved its claws and legs, regaining the feeling of moving its limbs once again, before slashing the surrounding air with a sharp and terrifying roar.
If Arnold didn’t pull Bertram away, the werewolf would’ve cut through him as easily as one would cut tofu.
Everyone in the group raised their weapons and guards.
“Damn it! What do we do?!” Bertram asked, looking at everyone else. “Do we run?!”
“No!” Frank shouted. “The thing’ll catch up! We have to fight!”
Arnold drew his colossal greatsword and pointed the mighty weapon at the werewolf in front of us.
“That’s fine by me then!”
His archer friend reached for an arrow and stood behind Arnold.
She sighed.
“Let’s make this quick.”
Bertram stood by Arnold and grinned.
“Now that I’m getting a good sense of its mana, this dog doesn’t seem to have gotten any stronger!”
Ophelia and I nodded.
Bertram was right. I didn’t feel any shocking pain, or any sort of pain that would be worse than that.
“Still, be careful!” I said. “It may not have gotten stronger, but it’s still a werewolf!”
Bertram nodded
“Of course we’ll be careful! This isn’t the first time we’ve dealt with weird, powerful creatures! Watch and learn, newbie!”
Arnold and Bertram sprinted towards the werewolf.
The creature swung and leaned in for a jaw-crushing bite.
“Damn, you’re fast!” Bertram yelled.
Despite his stocky build, the guy was surprisingly fast, jumping back and dodging the werewolf’s attacks.
Meanwhile, Arnold swung at it with his colossal greatsword.
The werewolf jumped away. It was exploiting the one bad thing about Arnold’s attacks.
Slowness.
His attacks packed a punch, but that didn’t matter if he couldn’t land it.
The werewolf jumped towards Arnold, finding its opportunity to slash at him, only to scratch the flat side of his blade.
Arnold grinned.
Zwip!
In a heartbeat, an arrow lodged its way into the side of the werewolf’s neck.
Taking his chance once he saw the werewolf distracted, Bertram swung at the beast!
“Graaaaagh!”
The blade slashed the werewolf’s leg, but the creature was able to jump back and create distance from the three fighters.
The werewolf stuck its tongue out, heaving quick and heavy sighs.
Seeing that, Bertram and the archer clicked their tongues.
“The damn cut was shallow,” Bertram spat.
Still, in just that short amount of time, they injured the werewolf to the point where it needed to back off.
“They’re amazing…” I said, looking over in awe.
Ophelia nodded.
“They’re strong.”
And it wasn’t just that. The way these guys fought, they had some sort of system and synergy that no show or game could replicate on Earth!
These guys knew how to fight as a team.
“We’re lucky to have them on our side,” I said.
With these guys with us, we’ll be able to leave the city for sure!
Ophelia nodded with a shy smile.
She didn’t say anything, and she didn’t need to. Her smile said it all. She felt safe with them.
And I think we all do.
But then something occurred to me.
We got together with the others and stood behind August, who raised her shield.
As Arnold and his buddies continued fighting the werewolf, I tried looking past them and down the street.
“Are you looking for it too, Tai?” Mia asked.
She squinted in the same direction as I did.
“Yeah.”
I switched my focus to the nearby houses and alleyway.
There were no signs of it.
My breathing grew heavy.
“Where is it?” I said aloud.
“What are you two looking for?” Maya asked.
I scanned the area once more. There was nothing. How could that be?
Sweat accumulated and dropped down the side of my cheek.
I gave my answer.
“The second werewolf,” I told Maya. “I can’t find it anywhere…”
I looked from left to right, at the busted-up homes and the dark alleyways. I even turned around to scan the area.
With Arnold and his party fighting the lying werewolf, it made it almost impossible to keep my ears peeled for another werewolf.
Damn it!
I clenched my teeth.
It’s after us. I know it is.
Everyone else joined us on our lookout for the second werewolf but…nothing.
Everyone’s anxiety was rising. Their eyes darted all over, trying to find some sort of shadow or blood drop that would indicate this werewolf’s location.
But still, there was nothing.
“This is bad…”
I couldn’t help but say that aloud.
This werewolf was going to get the drop on us.
And it did.
Because from above, on top of the building beside us, I heard a faint growl…
