Chapter 26:

The Escape

Echoes of Lost Memories

It was nightfall, Scarlet looked through the small skylight in the cell to see the stars in the sky. It was dark with small spectacles of scattered light. She could see some constellations. They can bring good luck to those who need it. She and Blackwood had decided tonight was going to be when they would make their escape. So far, it seemed the blob guards in the shack area were oblivious to their plan. They were having a sumo wrestling match amongst themselves. Glasses were clinking with each other, and loud squishy laughter echoed in the guard shack. They were quite noisy amongst themselves. Scarlet and Blackwood looked at each other and nodded. They decided now was their chance to flee. Scarlet tossed one of her magical pills over to Blackwood.

They decided to trick the guards and distract them, so they could escape.

“Guards! Help, I need your help!

The guards stopped drinking and looked at each other. “Who is screaming at this hour?”

They grumbled and stumbled across the cells to reach their destination. One of them pushed the other against the jail cell. They bounced more sluggishly than before since they were drunk. They started laughing.

“Hehehehe you almost got me!”

They tried to taunt the prisoners; they squished their bodies up against the cell walls and their bodies formed multiple blob elastic hands coming through. The hands ranged in various sizes, all eager to pounce in every direction. They tried to slap the prisoner inside with all of the hands. The sight was intimidating.

Scarlet thought to herself.

They seem braver when they are drunk.

The blobs then came over to Blackwood’s cell. One of the blob guards stretched its body to look bigger. The other one divided itself into small blobs and began to bicker with one another.

Blackwood covered his mouth, trying not to laugh after witnessing these actions.

“Oh? Blackwood, not so tough at you now?” The blob smirked.

The blob guards did not hear a response and were agitated by that.

“Oh you’re too good for us huh you lowly prisoner.”

They then banged loudly on the bars.

Clang Clang

Then, they stretched out their arms to push a beer bottle in between the cell bars, “I know you’re thirsty… come drink.”

Still, silence.

“Wake up!” The blobs cried.

They tossed the beer bottle out of rage and the broken pieces shattered all around the floor.

“Don’t make us angry!” They banged on the cell door dramatically, causing Scarlet’s cell to shake as well.

While they leaned closer and looked carefully, they could not believe their small squinty eyes. They blinked repeatedly to see if their vision changed, but they did not.

They saw the Cosmocrats in the cell instead of Scarlet and Blackwood. They rubbed their eyes again to confirm what they saw.

Blackwood in disguise yelled, “You idiots, stop playing around! What are you standing still there for? Get us out of here! You’re so dumb that you locked the wrong people in here. You’ll be punished if you don’t get us out sooner.”

Scarlet smiled nervously.

I’m not sure if the Cosmocrats would say it in that manner.

The other guard was prepared to free them until they huddled to decide on what to do.

Unfortunately, even though they were drunk, they were still sensible somehow and agreed to wait until they were sober.

Scarlet and Blackwood were worried if they don’t escape now, they might lose their chance.

Scarlet was thinking about how Blackwood was able to read her mind.

What if we can possess their mind?

Scarlet then pulled out her scroll weapon and took one of the broken beer bottle glass pieces from the ground. She brought it close to her finger and punctured a hole. The blood droplet started to appear.

She used her blood to write on the scroll and chanted the spell out loud.

The mind is a mess,

Sneak deep inside,

Force, but don’t hide,

Under my control.

Both blobs froze in place and did not move an inch.

“Unlock the cell door.” She blurted. As she moved her arm, the guard did the same. The blob was not able to move its body on its own and she was in full control.

The blob guard followed her command, and it started to insert its key into the cell door.

Blackwood clapped his hands; he was extremely impressed by her actions.

“A proud prison escaper, you definitely are.”

Scarlet smiled knowing he was just teasing.

He thought to himself.

So she really does know magic…she’s a lot stronger than I thought

He stared at the delicate scrolls she was holding.

Those are the royal scrolls! How in the world can she hold those? Who is she?

The blob guard then came over to his cell.

Clink Clink

It was able to open the cell door; it was the first time Blackwood could taste freedom. He felt a feeling of happiness rush through his body.

A whirlwind came down and sand blasted them. The two of them ended up coughing from the excess of dust in the air. A familiar hooded figure came over and unleashed a powerful spell to blast a hole underground. The hole looked like it led to a hidden passageway.

“Scarlet, you look nice in that cloak, it suits you.”

Her face lit up. “Flen, it’s you! How do you know?”

“I can distinguish between Theo’s Cosmocrat disguise and a real Cosmocrat. The disguise still has a more human feel.”

Then he turned over to Blackwood. “You…Sir…” He paused. “I guess you can come along, too.”

Blackwood nodded at him and grinned.

“Both of you follow me, there’s an underground pathway.”

Flen took them down to an underground area with small slimes stuck on the sides of the wall.

There were small rock chips rolling down from the sides.

Tumble Tumble

“Sorry, it took me so long to find you, Scarlet... I didn’t think Theo would be as low as imprisoning you.”

It was getting darker; there were two pathways to choose from. Flen was about to direct them on a certain path.

Scarlet’s mind sensed something was wrong.

“Flen, I don’t think we should go that way.” She said disapprovingly.

“Where do you want to go then Scarlet?”

Scarlet and Blackwood’s disguises at this time were worn off.

Flen trusted Scarlet and he was willing to follow what she was going to say.

Scarlet remembered she had her compass and asked for an exit, it spun around in two different directions.

Flen mentioned, “It must be that we are too far underground for it to work.

Blackwood heard the sounds of rats crawling close by.

The rats whispered and snickered amongst themselves.

“Foolish humans, if they were smart, they would follow us.”

“Right, they’re all big stumbling dumb giants.”

They squeaked in laughter.

All Flen and Scarlet heard was a lot of squeaking noises. They noticed Blackwood was concentrating and truly listening in on every squeak.

“Hey, let’s follow the rats.”

Flen was skeptical.

Can this

“Did I hear you right? Follow the rats?” He asked.

Blackwood, “Yes, I heard from them, there is a better route, and they know it.”

Flen was not buying it, and he was not sure how to respond.

Scarlet saw how sincere Blackwood’s words were.

Maybe he can hear animals’ thoughts or something, too?

“I believe him, let’s follow the rats.”

Flen was standing behind confused. Scarlet ran over to him and pulled him by his hand.

“Miss Scarlet?”

“If you’re not moving, I’ll move you.” Scarlet smirked at Flen.

Flen smiled, “Fine.”

Blackwood looked at them and was in awe.

How adorable…

The rats noticed them following.

“Drats! Look who’s behind us.”

“Oh my, they must have figured it out that we know.”

“Hey, let’s lose them.”

Blackwood reacted fast and captured one of the rats. It was trying to wiggle itself out of his hand.

It squealed at him in a high-pitched tone.

“Hey, let me go!”

He gently poked the rat’s belly. “Not yet my friend, we still need to show us where the exit is.”

The rat was flabbergasted. “You understand me?! What kind of human are you?!”

Flen whispered in Scarlet’s ear, “Are you sure your cell friend is sane?

“Don't be mean to him, of course he is.” She muttered.

The rat then showed them a small compartment door that can lead them to the surface.
